NCAA POWER 25 – 2017 WEEK 3

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Colorado St. 41-23. The Rams scored some garbage TDs in the 4th quarter that made the final score appear closer than it actually was. This is the Alabama formula on full display. So far the Tide have ran the ball 120 times compared to 66 rushing attempts. It was the same against Colorado State. I’m surprised the defense is allowing 13.3PPG, but as you saw against Florida St., when the defense shows up fully motivated, opposing offenses don’t score.
#2 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Tulane 56-14. Tulane actually played pretty well in the first quarter being tied with the Sooners 14-14, but over the next 3 quarters, Oklahoma outscored the Green Wave 42-0! The Baker Mayfield show was on full display as he went 17/27 for 331yds/4TD without a pick. Mayfield is on pace for 4,881 yards/47TD. Given what happened to Kansas St. on Saturday & TCU giving up 30+ to SMU, it really looks like Bedlam! is the only thing standing from 12-0!
#3 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Louisville 47-21. Back to back wins against Auburn & Louisville with Louisville being played on the road is easily the most impressive two weeks of football by any team in the nation thus far & Clemson could definitely make a case for being the #1 team in the nation. The Tigers defense flexed hard last night against Lamar Jackson recording 4 sacks, 7 tackles for loss & 5 passes defended. Kelly Bryant is playing well & at this point I don’t see a weakness.
#4 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Texas 27-24 (2OT). How good is USC? It needed double OT to beat a Texas team that gave up 51 to Maryland in their season opener. Yes the Stanford win looks good but Stanford just lost to San Diego State! USC also had a little bit of trouble against a 1-2 W.Michigan squad. I think the reason you rank the Trojans high is because of Sam Darnold. There is enough talent here to never get blown out & I don’t think you bet against Darnold in a close game.
#5 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Georgia St. 56-0. Another week another blow out win for the Nittany Lions but at this point who have they really beat? Two of their wins have come against Georgia St. & Akron. The other against a Pittsburgh team that was destroyed by Oklahoma State. Those 3 teams have a combined record of 2-6 & none of them are a bowl team. Yes Saquon Barkley is on pace for at least 2400 yards from scrimmage but good grief Penn St. play a decent opponent!
#6 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Air Force 29-13. The academies are a lot tougher than people imagine & Air Force is a pretty good football team that can run the football. They tried like crazy to get things going on the ground against Michigan, but the Falcons only managed 168 yards on 49 carries which translates into a great showing defensively for the Wolverines. Wilton Speight is going to have to make some plays at some point though. The Florida wins looks really good now.
#7 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Fresno St. 48-16. Last week Fresno St. faced Alabama! This week they had Washington! They got two playoff teams in back to back week & were outscored 89-26. In some ways that feels like a win! The average score is 45-13 and it seems as if the Bulldogs should have been beaten by a greater margin. QB Jake Browning was almost perfect in this game going 19/22 for 255yds/4TD & no picks. Washington hasn’t played anyone yet, but Colorado is up next.
#8 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Pittsburgh 59-21. Is #10 too low for the Cowboys? Last week Penn St. hosted Pittsburgh and beat the Panthers by 19 points. This week Oklahoma St. travels to Pittsburgh and beats them by 38. Mason Rudolph finally threw an interception yesterday but he also almost threw for 500 yards & had 5TD. The Cowboys had 4 receivers go over 100yds & Justice Hill ran for 2TD and 91yds. The weapons are outstanding here & OK-State should probably be top-5.
#9 Computer Hope Last Week Beat BYU 40-6. Brigham Young is terrible & they have no offense, but the Badgers are completely thrashing teams at this point. Have they played anyone yet? Not really, but Alex Hornibrook is a darn near perfect QB & the Badgers can run with Jonathan Taylor & Chris James. The Badgers are always going to be able to run so if Hornibrook doesn’t make mistakes, they’ll be fine. How about the LB crew from Wisconsin? TJ Edwards, Chris Orr & Leon Jacobs?!!!
#10 Computer Hope Last Week Beat LSU 37-7. WOW! I thought the Bulldogs could win this game in Starkville and I also am getting the feeling that this team has a chance to mimic what the 2014 team did when they were the #1 ranked team in the nation. This wasn’t just a win. It was a THRASHING of a team with ELITE level talent. I know we can get caught in Nick Fitzgerald or Aeris Williams, but the Bulldogs O-Line has been spectacular this season. Next week at Georgia is CRAZY!
#11 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Army 38-7. I’m not sure you can get up too much over this win. Sure JT Barrett looked great, but he’s always going to look great against inferior opponents. Ohio St. was going up against a bunch of 1-2 star guys and they ran wild which isn’t surprising. I like Army and like the Navy & Air Force they try to get after you with their running game with that triple option attack, but the Buckeyes are too fast for that to be very effective. We didn’t learn too much.
#12 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Samford 42-14. The win in South Bend looks good with the Irish rebounding against Boston College. Jake Fromm might have taken the starting QB position from Jake Eason & isn’t looking back. The true frosh QB went 8/13 for 165yds/3TD in a game where Nick Chubb flashed his old self running for 131yds/2TD on just 16 carries. No Sony Michel but UGA played a little smash mouth running it 54 times. Fromm is 2-0 as a starter with a 5:1 TD:INT ratio.
#13 Computer Hope Last Week Game No Game. The Seminoles had another week off before they resume playing next week when they host NC State. That’s an interesting game for the Seminoles as true freshman James Blackman gets the nod at QB & will be facing a pretty stout defensive line from the Wolfpack. NC State had a tough opening loss to South Carolina but have rebounded to win two straight so they’ll be ready to go while FSU might have a little rust from their layoff.
#14 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Mercer 24-10. Not overly dominant but Auburn went off script a bit by passing the ball so much. This almost felt like a game where War Eagle was working out some kinks on offense. Jarrett Stidham threw the ball 37 times which is never going to happen in big games, but he completed 32 of them (86.5%) although he didn’t find the endzone. Nine receivers caught the ball with 8 of them having multiple catches. They are still a solid playoff possibility.
#15 Computer Hope Last Week Beat East Carolina 64-17. Sometimes things make sense. Virginia Tech beat West Virginia. Both teams played East Carolina in back to back weeks. West Virginia beat the Pirates by 36. Virginia Tech beat them by 47. It works out! Virginia Tech is going to run you into the ground & D up against the run, but QB Josh Jackson can make some plays & I think this is what separates the Hokies. They get Clemson & play Miami-FL on the road but 10-2 is the floor.
#16 Computer Hope Last Week Beat SMU 56-36. Give up 7 points to Arkansas on the road, come back home and give up 36 points to SMU? TCU’s defense looked abysmal. No sacks. Just 3 tackles for loss. The Mustangs racked up almost 500 total yards of offense & only had the ball for 26 minutes! The Horned Frogs offense did show up. Kenny Hill threw for 4TD and the TCU rushing attack ran for 254yds/3TD! TCU plays at Oklahoma St. next week & if they just gave up 36 to SMU? Scary.
#17 Computer Hope Last Week Game No Game. Like Florida St., Miami-FL hasn’t played since Week 1 and they’ll finally get back on the field next week when they host a Toledo squad who has started out 3-0 & is playing pretty good football. Rockets QB Logan Woodside is a player so the Hurricanes will have to defend against him, but Toledo’s defense has looked pretty bad all season so I’m guessing the ultra athletic skill players in Miami won’t have any issues getting loose.
#18 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Mississippi St. 7-37. WOW! I thought Mississippi St. would win this game, but by 30 points!? LSU’s defense was absolutely shredded in this game. Aeris Williams ran for 146 yards on 23 carries. Nick Fitzgerald chipped in 88 & 2TD on 14 carries. Derrius Guice ran well for LSU but the Tigers didn’t have the ball much. I also think this was a good example of LSU not creating turnovers on defense. I’m not selling on LSU completely but this was a red flag.
#19 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Wyoming 49-13. The win over Nebraska last week doesn’t look nearly as good as it did when it happened now that the Cornhuskers dropped a home game to Northern Illinois! That being said, the Ducks still ran wild over an over-matched Wyoming squad and the defense made Josh Allen look terrible. Royce Freeman had over 2ooyds from scrimmage & Justin Herbert completed 62% for 251yds. The offense is averaging 56PPG which ranks #3!
#20 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Clemson 21-47. So you lose to Clemson? If the Tigers are ranked #3 then Louisville has an argument for being the #5 team in the nation after Clemson, Oklahoma, Alabama & Auburn. They still have the most electric QB in the country and the defense is super athletic. The Florida St. game will pose a problem because it’s in Tallahassee, but it’s going to be hard for the Redbirds not to finish 10-2 with a shot at an 11-2 season. They are THIS close however.
#21 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Tennessee 26-20. The 63-yard pass from Feleipe Franks to Tyrie Cleveland on the last play of the game to win it was total bananas. The Gators almost threw it away up 20-10 with 5 minutes left in the 4th only to see Tennessee pull off the miracle comeback to tie it up. I think this gives Florida quite a bit of confidence & watching them, you just can’t get away from how extraordinarily athletic this team is. The loss to Michigan stinks, but it was Michigan!
#22 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Oregon St. 52-23. Luke Falk went out of his mind against the Beavers throwing for 396 yards & 6TD on 37/49 (75.5%) passing. Oregon St. isn’t great but neither is Montana & the Cougars beat both of them. Throw in the 3-point win over Boise St. and Wazzou has started 3-0 against teams they should beat. This is a big deal. Washington St. hasn’t started a season 3-0 since 2005. Don’t sleep on the defense either. Not fantastic but very opportunistic.
#23 Computer Hope Last Week No Game. The Terrapins got the week off after great wins against Texas & Towson. The Texas win looks fantastic now that the Longhorns went into the Coliseum and took USC to double overtime. Texas probably wins that game if not for the strip fumble in 2OT that gave USC the ball only needing to score. If you rank USC as the #4 team in then nation, then Maryland makes a good case for being in the top-10. Should be 4-0 when they visit Columbus.
#24 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Boston College 49-20. The Irish rush offense went absolutely crazy against BC rushing for 515 yards on 51 carries with 7TD! RB Josh Adams led the way with 229yds on just 18 carries but QB Brandon Wimbush also chipped in 207yds on 21 carries! This has to give ND & especially Wimbush a lot of confidence, but last week against Georgia you saw ND struggle. To me this is where the Irish are. Good enough to win some games, but not against the elite.
#25 Computer Hope Last Week Beat South Carolina 23-13. I might have been higher on South Carolina more than anyone outside of Columbia, so if Kentucky can go into South Carolina and get a 23-13 win, I have to reward the Wildcats who ran their record to 3-0. I thought UK would be pretty good this year & may even challenge in the SEC East but troubles with E.Kentucky & Southern Miss early spelled disaster. Then they beat South Carolina & now what? Can they beat Florida next?

DROPPING OUT

#11 STANFORD CARDINAL: Losing to San Diego State? Really Stanford? What has Stanford really done this year to be honest? They blew out a terrible Rice team before losing back to back games against USC & San Diego State. USC had trouble with Western Michigan and Texas took them to OT. This same Texas team that gave up 51 to Maryland in Austin! USC blew out the Cardinal so where does that put Stanford? Behind Texas? Behind Western Michigan? Stanford’s defense could not get off the field! At this point Stanford is completely wasting an AMAZING season from RB Bryce Love who nobody can stop at this point. These first 3 games couldn’t have gone worse.

#16 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS: Losing at home to Kentucky!? Kentucky!!?!?!?!!? Carolina didn’t really have an answer for Kentucky’s running game. They couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down and the Kentucky rush defense was excellent. Deebo Samuel broke his leg late in the game and is now out for the year which is a CRUSHING blow to this offense moving forward. Carolina was a little sloppy as well with turnovers and penalties. This went from a year of infinite possibilities to one of distinct questions in the span of a Saturday afternoon. What a tough loss to take and now the season is in jeopardy.

#22 UCLA BRUINS: Riley Ferguson is a decent QB, but in his first game of the year against UL-Monroe, Ferguson was 10/25 for 97 yards and an interception with no TD passes. In his 2nd game of the year against UCLA, Ferguson goes 23/38 for 398 yards & 6TD to just one pick and outplays potential #1 overall draft pick Josh Rosen! The Bruins defense is giving up 38.3PPG and is complete garbage at this point. It sounds absolutely crazy given the talent level on this squad, but UCLA legitimately could go 4-8/3-9. Next year is going to be wild because Rosen will enter the NFL Draft and I think Jim Mora is looking for a job. Crazy times.

#24 KANSAS ST. WILDCATS: You can’t be taken seriously if you travel to Vanderbilt and lose 14-7. K-State ran the ball for over 200 yards and still lost this football game. The Wildcats had more total yards, more first time, greater time of possession and more rushing yards. And lost. Terrible. Assuming they can’t win road games, KSU has at least 3 more losses and play Oklahoma at home meaning another L which limits them to an at best 7-5 record with home games against West Virginia & Texas Tech potentially preventing them from a bowl game. Goodness! A loss to Vanderbilt!?

2017 COLLEGE FOOTBALL – WEEK 3 BIG GAMES

AWAY QUICK THOUGHTS HOME
Computer Hope What happens when an unstoppable force comes up against an immovable object? We’re about to find out when Clemson’s D-Line goes up against Louisville QB Lamar Jackson! Louisville’s defense hasn’t been able to stop anyone so I think Clemson won’t have any issues scoring points & winning. What will be interesting is to see how Clemson stops Jackson. They dominated Auburn’s run game last week, what will that defense do this week? Computer Hope
Computer Hope I think whoever wins his game starts garnering a bit more attention. LSU is sniffing the top-10 while the Bulldogs have laid the wood against inferior competition in their first two weeks. Last year LSU beat Hail State 23-20 in Baton Rouge despite being 13-point favorites. I think Mississippi St. is better this year so a win is clearly possible. I’m guessing LSU DC Dave Aranda’s going to stop MSU’s run game so Nick Fitzgerald is going to have to throw. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Florida seems like a mess right now. They were humiliated by Michigan on national television in Week 1 & had to miss their 2nd game because of a hurricane. Instead of working out the kinks against N.Colorado, Florida will now host a 2-0 Tennessee team that gutted out a win over Georgia Tech & then dominated Indiana State. This is a huge confidence builder for the Vols, but an opportunity for Florida to right the ship & get back on track. Computer Hope
Computer Hope The last time these two squads met was the 2005 Rose Bowl where a Vince Young led Longhorns squad upset a Matt Leinart led Trjoans squad for the national championship. USC is going to win this game & they are going to win big. When you consider that Texas gave up 51 points to Maryland, USC might end up scoring 60 points. The key will be Texas not being embarrassed which I think will be difficult. Tough start for Tom Herman. Computer Hope
Computer Hope They aren’t beating Clemson & USC, but a win here by South Carolina will put the Gamecocks at 3-0 with a 2-0 record against SEC East teams & a win over a solid NC State squad. That’s a tremendous start to a season when a lot of teams are feasting on Sun Belt & FCS schools. Kentucky has been a bit surprising too. I’m not surprised they are 2-0 but I thought they would have dominated more. This is a big game for both programs. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Stanford has to be VERY careful here. The USC loss stings but this is still a very formidable football team that can win the Pac 12 North & get a rematch with USC in the Pac 12 championship game in which case a win probably means the playoffs. The Sun Devils are for real though. They are coming off a convincing road win over Arizona St. & RB Rashaad Penny is nothing short of outstanding. Stanford should be on upset alert. Computer Hope
Computer Hope BYU should be better than the 1-2 they’ve posted. The offense is downright dreadful & QB Tanner Magnum has been awful. I still think there is some value in this game because LSU beat the Cougars 27-0 & Utah just finished beating them 19-13. Wisconsin has looked outstanding in their first two games so it’ll be interesting where they fall on the spectrum established by LSU & Utah. A 28+ win for Wisconsin puts them with LSU. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Oregon St. hasn’t been able to stop anyone as their defense is allowing 46PPG! That doesn’t bode well in going up against a Mike Leach led offense! I still think this one is interesting though because Wazzou the last few years lets an early one go & I think Gary Andersen is a great head football coach. I’d love to see Washington St. get to 5-0 before hosting USC on September 29th, but they need to keep avoiding oddball upsets. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Ole Miss entered the season a disaster but so far the on-field results have been amazing. QB Shea Patterson has completed 77% of his passes for 918 yards & 9TD to only 1INT! He’s on pace to throw for over 5400 yards & 54TD. AJ Brown & DeMarkus Lodge have been ELITE. California, like Ole Miss, finds itself 2-0 after their upset win over UNC in Week 1. The winner here gets to 3-0 which I think is surprising for either program. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Week 3 isn’t the best slate of games, but I have Purdue/Missouri on here because it’ll be a chance for you to see QB insanity as David Blough and Drew Lock go head to head in what should be a “Defense Optional” backyard pick up game! Lock threw for over 500 yards with 7TD in Week 1 against Missouri State. Blough has the ability to throw for 700 yards whenever the mood strikes him. A meaningless game, but tons of fireworks! Computer Hope

NFL POWER 32 – 2016 WEEK 3

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope At this point Bill Belichick is just trolling the rest of the NFL with New England’s QB situation. I’m half expecting Belichick to hold impromptu QB auditions to the public this week to determine who will start against Buffalo this week. Starting 3-0 without Brady & Gronkowski? Nobody would have believed you!
#2 Computer Hope Three starts. Three wins for first time starting QB Trevor Siemian with this past week’s performance against the Bengals being his best to date throwing for 312 yards & 4TD with nary a pick. Siemian is only 24 and at this rate Paxton Lynch is never going to see the field. The defense is outstanding and this team could repeat.
#3 Computer Hope The offense wasn’t as sharp under Sam Bradford this past week against Carolina as it was the week prior against Green Bay, and the running game without Adrian Peterson looked bad, but the Vikings still put a beating on Carolina 22-10 behind a defense that sacked Cam Newton 8 times & picked him off 3 times.
#4 Computer Hope I can see not getting overly excited about beating the Bears & Browns in the first couple of weeks. In a way you almost expected it, but beating the Steelers 34-3!? It’s time to start getting on the Carson Wentz bandwagon! Do not forget about the Eagles defense. Allowing 3 points to the Steelers offense? Good grief!
#5 Computer Hope The 34-3 loss to the Eagles is a bit humiliating, but Philadelphia might really be that good and I can guarantee you the defense really is that good with Jim Schwartz as the DC. The Steelers could figure out a way to get balance with the offense because they had no running game. Le’Veon Bell returns next week. That’ll help.
#6 Computer Hope Aaron Rodgers got back to looking like Aaron Rodgers going for 205 yards & 4TD but don’t discount the impact that Eddie Lacy had rushing for 103 yards on just 17 carries. Despite the final being 34-27, this game was never close. Green Bay was up 31-3 at one point. The defense got careless in the end but it didn’t matter.
#7 Computer Hope First you lose to the Patriots and their 3rd string QB 27-0 on Thursday night. Now you begin the next week with putting J.J. Watt on IR which could mean he’ll miss the rest of the season. It’s not been a great week for the Texans. The offense has to get a lot better & Jadeveon Clowney needs to pick up his game in lieu of Watt.
#8 Computer Hope An outstanding defensive effort for the Chiefs picking off Ryan Fitzpatrick 6 times and turning the ball over 8 times. The Chiefs were +7 in TO margin against the Jets. I’m not sure how many times that has happened historically but I’d be SHOCKED if a team was +7 in TO margin and lost! Derrick Johnson was outstanding.
#9 Computer Hope The Ravens are 3-0 but I’m starting to get the feeling it’s more style than substance. They’ve beaten the Browns, Jags & Bills. Those teams are a combined 1-8! The running game is atrocious. Joe Flacco has more INT than TD. They’ve been great defensively but their next five opponents are legit. We’ll know more then.
#10 Computer Hope Oakland’s defense played up to the offseason hype picking off Marcus Mariota twice & forcing 3 turnovers in a 17-10 win over Tennessee. You can make an argument that the Titans should have won this game. They had no issues running over the Raiders defense, but that same defense made enough big plays to get a road win.
#11 Computer Hope I loved how during the pregame interview Jason Witten was talking about getting wins until Tony comes back. At this rate Romo isn’t coming back. Beating the Bears is no big deal but Dak Prescott had an even bigger confidence boost by throwing for his first TD and rushing for another. He’s still hasn’t been picked off.
#12 Computer Hope Arizona probably is a lot better than the 12th best team in the NFL but they have significant problems going forward on offense. I understand Carson Palmer is a good QB and you have some talented receivers but how does Palmer have 117 pass attempts and David Johnson has only 47 rushing attempts? That’s ridiculous.
#13 Computer Hope Another game I simply don’t understand from a strategic perspective. The Giants averaged 5.7ypc on the Redskins defense and had a 21-16 lead at home at halftime! Why does Eli Manning throw the ball 38 times and the runners get 21 rushes? How do the Giants lose the time of possession battle in a game like this?
#14 Computer Hope Andy Dalton is taking a beating. He’s been sacked 12 times on the season which puts him on pace for 60 sacks taken for the season! How bad is Cincinnati’s offensive line? On the other hand, the Bengals two losses have come against Pittsburgh & Denver so being 1-2 at this point shouldn’t really change anyone’s outlook.
#15 Computer Hope In week 2 against the Bills he throws for 374 yards and a TD without tossing an interception. Last week against the Chiefs he throws for 188 yards with 6 interception, but no  TDs! Welcome to Ryan Fitzpatrick’s world! We are just living in it! The Jets can’t be taken seriously with that sort of inconsistency at quarterback.
#16 Computer Hope Devontae Freeman GOT LOOSE Monday night against the Saints defense and Matt Ryan was darn near perfect again in Atlanta’s 45-32 win over New Orleans. I’d be a little more excited about the Falcons being 2-1 if it wasn’t for the fact they started 6-0 last year before crashing and the fact that their defense is terrible.
#17 Computer Hope A lot of good signs in this game for the Seahawks. Offensively, Seattle was able to move the ball efficiently. Getting Jimmy Graham going was a huge deal & Christine Michael ran well. On the other hand, something isn’t completely right with Russell Wilson’s ankle & that’s a problem. Beat the Jets & they’ll move up a lot.
#18 Computer Hope Against the Broncos & Vikings Cam Newton is 39/69 (57%) for 456 yards/1TD/4INT. Against the 49ers,  Newton was 24/40 (60%) for 353 yards/4TD/1INT. Newton hasn’t played well against elite defenses and I think he’s having a hard time taking the beating he’s taking. The other NFC South teams should take note.
#19 Computer Hope The Redskins got the win they needed by upending the Giants 29-27 in New York! That is a HUGE divisional game for the Skins especially coming on the road. Kirk Cousins played well, DeSean Jackson & Jamison Crowder had big plays and the defense held Eli Manning in check. The naysayers can calm down now.
#20 Computer Hope I’m not sure the Colts should have won that game but they needed a win in the worst way & beating the Chargers 26-22 puts some salve on a festering wound. San Diego really didn’t have an answer for TY Hilton who had a huge game. There are tremendous flaws with this team, but I could see them winning the South.
#21 Computer Hope San Diego has basically given two wins away this year. Instead of being 3-0 they are 1-2 and sitting in dead last 2 games behind Denver in the AFC West. I think Mike McCoy can be a great HC in the NFL, but I’m not sure he can do it with the Chargers. The team seems perpetually unlucky and I can’t quite figure it out.
#22 Computer Hope That is how the Bills should win football games. A lot of credit goes to new OC Anthony Lynn who switched Buffalo’s offensive attack to a more run-centric approach and made Tyrod Taylor more of a game manager. Throw in a defensive score and you have a 33-18 win over Arizona. I hope we see this moving forward.
#23 Computer Hope The Rams might not beat Tampa Bay 37-32 if Ethan Westbrooks doesn’t get that fumble return for a TD, but a win is a win is a win and the Rams improve to 2-1 and lead the NFC West! The defense didn’t have a great day although the D-Line played well. I hope they stick with Case Keenum. I think he can win games here.
#24 Computer Hope Not entirely sure what to think about the Bucs at this point. The defense is atrocious but how happy must the organization be to see Jameis Winston on pace for 40HR and 4600+ passing yards. Winston is throwing too many picks & his completion % isn’t fantastic, but he’s been worth every penny for going #1 overall.
#25 Computer Hope Losing to Green Bay isn’t that problematic. A road game at Lambeau is an expected loss, but Green Bay blew the barn doors off Detroit early & coasted. The problem is losing a home game to Tennessee the week before. It’s not on Matt Stafford. The guy is on pace to have the best season of his career. I hope it’s not wasted.
#26 Computer Hope I thought the Saints were going to challenge for the NFC South and that the defense had nowhere to go but up. I was wrong. The defense is embarrassing and even Drew Brees can’t win a 55-50 shootout every week. At this rate unless something drastic happens the Saints could be looking at a 4-12/5-11 season. That’s nuts!
#27 Computer Hope It’s never a good sign when you need OT to beat the Browns in your own backyard while making their 3rd string QB look like a competent NFL QB who could actually lead a team to a few wins. It doesn’t make sense really. Tannehill isn’t completely awful and the Dolphins have some defensive guys who can play well.
#28 Computer Hope I’m still waiting for the light to come on in Tennessee and the Titans start playing as good as they look on paper. In their 2 losses to Minnesota & Oakland, the Titans are -5 in TO margin & have given the ball up 6 times in those games. They need to run the ball more to set up the passing attack. I hope they figure it out.
#29 Computer Hope At some point you knew the Seattle offense was going to click and unfortunately it clicked on the 49ers last week as San Francisco lost 37-18. How bizarre is the NFL in that the 49ers can beat the Rams 28-0 and the Rams can beat the Seahawks 9-3, but the 49ers lost to Seattle by 19? A good sign is Carlos Hyde playing well.
#30 Computer Hope The Jaguars were somewhat of a sexy under the radar wild card pick before the season began but unfortunately Blake Bortles is still Blake Bortles and through 3 games he’s thrown 6 interceptions! He’s on pace for 32 which is 14 more than his previous career high. It might cost Gus Bradley his job but Bortles isn’t the guy.
#31 Computer Hope Chicago took a 31-17 beating at the hands of the Cowboys and it wasn’t even that close as Dallas was up 24-3 at halftime and 31-10 late in the 4th quarter. Brian Hoyer played well and the Chicago receivers had a good game, but they had no answer for the Dallas offense & Chicago couldn’t run the ball very well. Rough start.
#32 Computer Hope Cody Kessler might not be Philip Rivers, but he played a conservative solid game against Miami and almost got the Browns a win. Say what you will about Cleveland, but the team has some weapons once Josh Gordon comes back. If the defense can get a little better, the Browns will at least be able to scare teams they play.

2016 NFL FOOTBALL WEEK 3 – BIG GAMES

Getting these out a little bit late so I’m going to keep the comments short & sweet!

AWAY QUICK THOUGHTS HOME
Computer Hope This game will be a great measuring stick to see if the Texans are for real. Never lose sight of the fact that the Texans fancy themselves Super Bowl contenders. If that is the case they need to win the games they are supposed to win and even thought they are playing the Patriots on the road, the fact of the matter is that the Texans should be good enough to beat a good team with their 3rd string QB! A Houston loss will show quite a bit. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Brutal matchup for the Bills as I doubt the Arizona DBs are going to let Buffalo’s get loose vertically. What a terrible time for the Bills. Losing to the Ravens & Jets isn’t the end of the world but things move fast in the NFL and if the Bills lose this week which is likely they’ll be 0-3. They’ve already fired OC Greg Roman, but I think the bigger issues is that while we all love Tyrod Taylor’s arm, he might not be the answer at QB for Buffalo. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Tough matchup for Tennessee with the Raiders coming in, but Oakland hasn’t been able to generate a lot of pressure on opposing QBs. If the Titans can give Marcus Mariota a clean pocket at home, the Titans could potential do some damage. What’s interesting to me about this game is that the Titans are coming off a huge road win while the Raiders are coming off a disappointing home loss. There is a lot of momentum shifts here. Computer Hope
Computer Hope I’m not saying they are going to win, but I’m a believer in Cody Kessler until he proves he can’t play in the NFL and this is a game that Cleveland could get lucky. An even more interesting storyline here is Miami. The Dolphins stayed close with Seattle & New England in losses to start the season, but if the Dolphins have turned a corner like those games would indicate, they should blow the barn doors off the Browns at home. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Every NFL game is compelling which makes the league so amazing. This game is a bit subtle. It’s a game Jacksonville can win and the Jaguars really need to avoid the 0-3 start because that never ends well. They were sort of a sexy pick before the season began but 0-3 quells those expectations. The Ravens SHOULD win this game & get to 3-0 which sets them up well from this point, but those “should win” games are always risky. Computer Hope
Computer Hope And this is why you don’t lose 4th quarter leads to the Titans at home. If Detroit wins last week they are 2-0 and tied with Minnesota atop the NFC North. If they lose in Lambeau which is likely combined with Carolina beating Minnesota would put all 3 teams at 2-1 and in a 3-way tie. Now if Detroit loses they’ll drop to 1-2 which is still just one game behind the Packers & Vikings, but doesn’t 2-1 and tied for the lead sound better than 1-2? Computer Hope
Computer Hope The Bengals have opened with the Jets & Steelers and now get the Broncos! Good grief. This is another instance of early season games not seemingly meaning much but in reality can make or break a season. The Ravens & Steelers are favored to win their games but if the Bengals lose they are 1-2 with their two rivals at 3-0. That’s 2 games behind both & effectively 3 games behind Pittsburgh with 13 to play. That’s not an easy deficit. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Carolina needs this game to prove they are legit. Denver hit them in the mouth and Carolina couldn’t recover despite playing a 1st time starting QB. Last week they beat the 49ers but SF stuck with them late. A win over the Vikings could quiet a lot of doubters but it’s going to be interesting to see how Newton responds because I would think Minnesota is going to try to rough him up early. Tiebreaker implications here too. Computer Hope
Computer Hope I don’t expect Washington to win this game because the Giants are great & the Skins are on the road, but that means a lot of overreaction by the media to Kirk Cousins. It’s ridiculous on its face to be honest. Last year’s 1st place finish was a confluence of a lot of factors involving the demises of the Giants, Cowboys & Eagles. The Redskins got hot & it took them to the playoffs. That run shouldn’t be confused with them being good. Computer Hope
Computer Hope I’m really interested to see if the Rams front-7 can get pressure on Jameis Winston and get him off his game. Winston looked amazing in Week 1 against the Falcons but then looked awful against the Cardinals in Week 2. I think Winston will probably be up and down like that most of the year, but the Rams are an interesting barometer because they haven’t been very good. I’m interesting if they can keep BIG MO after beating Seattle. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Can’t wait to see if the 49ers defense can hit Russell Wilson early & often. If the Seahawks QB is as hurt as it seems, he’s in for a rough day as the Niners D could get some solid pressure. That’s a bad recipe because the Seahawks are hurting on offense & a hammered Wilson doesn’t help matters. I think it’s also time we believe SF might not be that bad. They blew out the Rams who beat Seattle & stayed with Carolina late. Tough team. Computer Hope
Computer Hope This might be the game of the wee for me. The Jets probably should have beaten Cincinnati to open the season & last week they pasted the Bills in Buffalo. This week they travel to Arrowhead which will be very difficult to win, but not impossible. I’m in on the Jets. The offense has a chance to be great & you know the defense is going to play well. I don’t think it says much if KC wins, but if the Jets win I think they put the league on notice. Computer Hope
Computer Hope The Colts, to me, is a team on the verge of implosion. The team has holes on the O-Line. They really can’t run the football either and the defense is dreadful. Throw in a tremendous amount of injuries & you have a perfect disaster for a team that isn’t good with a city & owner looking for someone to blame. The Colts need a win but so does San Diego & if the Bolts come out like they did last week, this one is over before it even starts. Computer Hope
Computer Hope It’s one thing to beat RG3 and the Browns followed by a win over a beat up Jay Cutler and the Bears. It’s an entirely different animal when Big Ben comes to town and brings arguably the most lethal offense in the NFL. Carson Wentz is going to have his hands full, but if he comes out of this one playing like a veteran then we might need to recalibrate the expectations on Philly. The Pederson/Schwartz/Wentz combo has teeth! Computer Hope
Computer Hope The worst thing that can happen in the NFC is for the Cowboys & Dak Prescott to gain confidence. Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t ran that well and Dak Prescott hasn’t been spectacular but if the Cowboys keep playing well & winning some games, the confidence is there. The defense still has issues to work through but the Bears & Brian Hoyer shouldn’t be a problem. Dallas gets a little lucky in not having to face Cutler so they should win. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Big time game in the AFC South. I thought coming into the season that the Saints had a real chance to unseat the Panthers, but the o-2 start is rough. I’m not reading too much into it because those losses have come by 4 points, but the Saints cannot afford to drop a road divisional game against a Falcons team that shouldn’t beat them. The Saints should finally get a win here & become a player in the South and the conference. Computer Hope

NCAA FOOTBALL POWER 25 – 2016 WEEK 3

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Yes Lamar Jackson is incredible and he’s by far and away leading any type of early Heisman voting but the game against Florida St. was a revelation for the Louisville defense. The Cardinals defenders made Deondre Francois look terrible & confused while RB Dalvin Cook couldn’t get off at all. It was 35-10 at halftime. It was 49-10 after 3 quarters! At this rate Jackson is on pace for pass for 4,260 yards & rush for 2,165 yards with a combined TD total of 84 rushing and passing. That’s nuts.
#2 Computer Hope The defense gave up 43 points and that hasn’t happened since…..Ole Miss scored 43 on the Tide last season! I think Alabama will take the 48-43 win from the Rebels in Oxford considering Ole Miss has beaten the Tide the last 2 seasons. Jalen Hurts didn’t look good in the passing game, but let’s be honest. Alabama wasn’t sure of their passing game coming into the season. They had USC & Ole Miss up & they’ve survived both. Hurts needs a couple of cupcakes. Kent St. & Kentucky are up next.
#3 Computer Hope Let’s assume for a second that the Buckeyes get to the national championship game. If that happens they’ll be playing in their 15th game. Assuming 15 games, JT Barrett is on pace to pass for 3250 yards with 50TD to 5INT while rushing for 795 yards & 15TD. Mike Weber is on pace to rush for 1,755 yards & 5TD. Curtis Samuel is on pace to combine for 2,595 yards & 20TD while WR Noah Brown is on pace to catch 25TD passes. Is it possible that this is Urban Meyer’s best team ever?
#4 Computer Hope It took the Wolverines a quarter to get going but once they did, Colorado didn’t stand a chance. The Buffaloes got out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter which had to have taken Michigan by surprise, but from that point forward, the Maize & Blue outscored Colorado 35-7. QB Wilton Speight didn’t have his best game but didn’t beat himself and the Michigan rushing offense took control. Colorado is a quality opponent. I think they are going to surprise some people and get close to a bowl game.
#5 Computer Hope The competition hasn’t been that stuff but I’m still buying the Huskies. Chris Petersen is a tremendous coach & Washington looks like they are firing on all cylinders. The Huskies have barely gotten to play a full game this season. They’ve outscored their opponents 97-3 in the 1st half! The starters are in street clothes before the halftime speech is half over! This team is exceptionally balanced on offense & the defense gets after it. It’s time to start playing big boys & see what we have in Seattle.
#6 Computer Hope I don’t know if Michigan St. can beat Michigan or Ohio State, but this is a helluva football team that went into South Bend & blew the doors off Notre Dame before the Irish made it close late in the game. It starts with HC Mark Dantonio is one of the 4 best HCs in the country along with Saban, Meyer & Harbaugh. The blueprint Michigan St. is using with O’Connor (a 5th year senior QB) along with Scott, McDowell, Bullough & Reschke is one I wonder if teams won’t pick up on and try to emulate.
#7 Computer Hope Cincinnati hung around way too long for my liking. The Cougars were locked up 10-10 at the half and after the 3rd quarter they held only a 2-pt lead at 12-10. Houston did open it up in the 4th quarter which led to the eventual 40-16 win, but Greg Ward was decisively off which has to have Cougars fans concerned. The win over Oklahoma still looks good but the shine is a bit tarnished after Ohio St. went into Norman and beat the Sooners. Houston needs to start racking up style points.
#8 Computer Hope I don’t see how Texas A&M is not in the top-10? If you like Clemson then you have to like the Aggies as they handled Auburn a bit easier than Clemson did in their opener. Beating UCLA & Auburn isn’t a couple of wins over top-5 teams, but it’s a very nice start to a solid resume. I’m not entirely sure there is a way to stop the Aggies offense. Trayveon Williams has some in & done a remarkable job as the RB. That opens up the passing attack with A&M’s fleet of receivers! They can get better.
#9 Computer Hope After a couple of close calls against Auburn & Troy to open up the season, Clemson needed a game like this week where they crushed South Carolina St. 59-0 & dominated in all phases of the game. I wouldn’t get too comfy if I was Clemson. They have to travel to Atlanta on a short week to take on a Georgia Tech squad that looks pretty good with all the experience they have returning on offense. Clemson also can’t afford to overlook GT just because they get Louisville the week after.
#10 Computer Hope The 63-20 ass-kicking at the hands of Louisville was humiliating, but the Seminoles need to forget about it and move on. It’s entirely possible that Louisville is the best team in the nation & that Lamar Jackson is the best college football player we’ve seen since Tim Tebow. It’s also possible Louisville’s defense is one of the best 2-3 defenses in the nation and nobody ever accused Bobby Petrino of not being a tremendous football coach. The goal now is 11-1 & hope for a playoff opening.
#11 Computer Hope At one point Ole Miss was leading Alabama 24-3 but ended up losing 48-43. At one point Ole Miss was leading Florida St. 28-6 but would wind up losing 45-34. If the Rebels win both of those games they are 3-0 with wins over Florida St. & Alabama. They’d not only be the #1 team in the country but it wouldn’t even be close no matter how well Michigan, Ohio St. & Louisville are playing. If Ole Miss is for real then they should be able to handle their business against Georgia this week.
#12 Computer Hope You say the Badgers needed a 4th quarter comeback against….Georgia State. Well that Nick Chubb guy is a pretty good runner and…not the University of Georgia, Georgia State University! The Badgers do this seemingly every year. Get a great win & then follow it up with ho-hum play. Now they might not be settled at QB with Alex Hornibrook relieving Bart Houston last Saturday. That isn’t great news when you have Michigan St. & Michigan on the road in back-to-back weeks.
#13 Computer Hope I like Stanford and I like Christian McCaffrey but this formula isn’t going to work long term. A team like Alabama is going to take away your running attack and I’m not sure Stanford is good enough to win when you make them a one-dimensional passing team. The 27-10 win over USC was solid but Alabama DESTROYED the Trojans & this at least to a small degree shows how far away the Cardinal is from Alabama. Then again, if Stanford plays Alabama, it’ll be for the title.
#14 Computer Hope Tennessee needed OT to beat Appalachian St. 20-13 in Knoxville. Miami-FL went into Boone & hammered the Mountaineers 45-10! I think you have to make something of that and at least rank Miami-FL ahead of Tennessee. What I do know is that not nearly as many people are talking about Mark Walton & Joseph Yearby as they should. The competition hasn’t been great but “THE U”‘s running attack is special & QB Brad Kaaya is getting it done. Miami should win the Coastal.
#15 Computer Hope At the end of the day Houston & Ohio State could very well wind up 13-0 by the time the season is over & both be in the playoffs. If that happens & Oklahoma runs the table, they’d be 10-2 as Big XII Champions with their two losses coming to teams with a combined record of 26-0! That isn’t awful. Even if Houston loses to Louisville, the combined record would be 25-1! The real trick will be seeing if Oklahoma can beat up the Big XII. They get TCU & Texas next. A couple of wins will help.
#16 Computer Hope The Volunteers are struggling entirely too much. The win over Appalachian St. doesn’t look so great now that Miami-FL put a beating on the Mounties. They had a hard time getting started against Virginia Tech & this week beat Ohio 28-19! UT has too much offense to average only 31PPG against their first 3 opponents. Beating Florida will help their reputation but they got a gift with Luke Del Rio getting injured. Will Tennessee score enough on a very stingy Gators defense? I don’t know.
#17 Computer Hope Leonard Fournette was back in the lineup crushing people, running for 147yds/2TD on 28 carries, but the Bayou Bengals needed everything they had to hold off  Mississippi St. in a 23-20 victory. Fournette is a game changer & I’m hoping that he along with Danny Etling can get this offense going because playing at Auburn this next week won’t be easy. How about the play of Arden Key? The true sophomore has 5 sacks already this season putting him on pace for 20! He’s #2 in the nation.
#18 Computer Hope After a couple of close calls to start the season, Arkansas got an over-matched Texas St. squad in Fayetteville and dropped the hammer beating the Bobcats 42-3. The Hogs were up 35-0 at halftime & cruised in the 2nd half. The win last week over TCU had to be a big confidence builder but this week we are about to see how good Arkansas can be when they take on Texas A&M. This should be a great matchup as Arkansas’ willingness to run the football could counter A&M’s big edge rushers.
#19 Computer Hope I’m not willing to give up on Auburn just yet. Like Oklahoma they’ve lost 2 of their first 3 games, but those losses have come to Texas A&M & Clemson. It’s entirely possible that Clemson runs the table in the ACC. The Aggies will have a much harder time running the SEC, but if they play to their talent level it’s a possibility which makes the two losses look great. I still think Auburn is going to catch someone sleeping. Auburn welcomes in LSU this week and this might be the week Auburn gets a win.
#20 Computer Hope The Aztecs are 3-0. They beat Cal. Cal beat Texas. Texas beat Notre Dame. There is certainly a lot of talk about Houston but SD State should be in the conversation as the best team not in the Big 5. They should go 12-0 given that Boise St. isn’t on the slate & a win over the Broncos in the Mountain West championship game would give them a perfect 13-0 record. Rocky Long is doing a helluva job & RB Donnell Pumphrey is on pace to rush for 2,795 yards with 33TD! Sleeper Heisman candidate?
#21 Computer Hope The competition has been atrocious so far, but the Gators have outscored their opponents 101-14 in their first 3 games including last week’s 32-0 blanking of North Texas. The bad news for Gators fans is the injury of QB Luke Del Rio. It isn’t clear when Del Rio will return but he won’t play against Tennessee. Austin Appleby, a Purdue transfer takes over. It might not be a horrible situation. Appleby has starting experience & Florida is a team who likes to run & defend. They can beat the Vols.
#22 Computer Hope The win over Oregon in Lincoln could be program changing for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska hasn’t been nationally relevant for a long time now but with Iowa losing to North Dakota St., Nebraska could be in line to win the Big 10 West if they can get by Wisconsin. The confidence level has to be high as they came from behind twice. Tommy Armstrong is doing a great job leading this team. Now the Huskers need to keep winning. They should be 7-0 when traveling to Madison on October 29th.
#23 Computer Hope Sonny Dykes can coach. Let’s not forget that in his first year at Cal in 2013, the Bears were 1-11 & 0-9 in Pac 10 play. Last year they were 8-5 (4-5) and won a bowl game by 19 points. The win over Texas is HUGE considering that the Longhorns beat Notre Dame earlier. The 45-40 loss to San Diego St. is forgivable especially if you consider the Aztecs could easily be 13-0 by season’s end. QB Davis Webb is lighting it up. The Bears are going to hand with anyone if Webb doesn’t throw picks.
#24 Computer Hope The problem with a guy like Shane Buechele, if he has one, is that he’s listed around 6’1/185lbs which means he’s probably 5’11-6’0 and 175lbs dripping wet. Buechele got injured in the Cal game which clearly affected his play and that might have been a huge factor in Texas’ loss although the defense giving up 50pts is the immediate problem. Little guys like Buechele are prone to injuries at time and that is a tough one to swallow. The Longhorns could still win the Big XII and finish 11-1.
#25 Computer Hope The Texas loss doesn’t look so hot now that the Longhorns lost to Texas. Losing to Michigan State isn’t the end of the world if Michigan St. keeps winning. If the Spartans lose to Wisconsin, Michigan & Ohio St. then they become a 3rd place team in the Big 10 East with a 9-3 record. The Irish should have no problems getting to 4-2 with Duke, Syracuse & NC State up, but their defense is a big problem. They could have 4-5 more losses. If that happens then VanGorder is gone & Kelly’s seat is hot again.

DROPPING OUT

#17 UCLA: The 17-14 win over BYU wasn’t inspiring enough for me to keep them in the power-25 although Utah only beat BYU by 1 point. The Cougars are an interested team. They opened up the season with a win over Arizona by 2 points. Then lost to Utah by 1 and then UCLA by 3. I’m not exactly sure what we have in the Pac 12. UCLA gets Stanford at home this week. A win here vaults them way up in the standings considering their only loss came to Texas A&M who could be 4-0 by week’s end.

#20 GEORGIA: Needed everything they had to escape Columbia with a 28-27 win over Missouri. Nick Chubb & Sony Michel were held in check while the Missouri offense played fairly well. If UGA didn’t pick Drew Lock off 3 times then Georgia probably loses their first game of the season. They get Ole Miss this week. A win in Oxford puts the Dawgs back in the power-25.

#22 IOWA: MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT. The problem with Iowa is that they still have a schedule to run the table and get to 11-1. It’s unlikely get win the Big 10 championship game no matter who they get from the East, but what a waste of an opportunity. Anything can happen in one game & if Iowa finishes 12-1, they still don’t make the playoffs with a loss to an FCS school no matter how many championships that school has won.

#25 USC: The two losses have come against Stanford & Alabama. If the loss to Alabama didn’t look so bad I think you can justify having the Trojans still in the Power-25 seeing how solid those two squads are. USC gets a road trip to Utah this week and a win over a ranked Utes team will definitely have me rethinking putting the Trojans back in the top-25.

2016 NCAA FOOTBALL WEEK 3 – BIG GAMES

I’m trying my best to stick to 10 games a week during the college season but I’m already breaking that rule for Week 3. I extended the important games out to 12 because I felt the storylines for the 12 games were enough to merit inclusion. Maybe a better rule will be a minimum of 10 games?

AWAY QUICK THOUGHTS HOME
Computer Hope Wow! This is definitely the game of the week. Louisville gets its first real test in the Seminoles, but with the way the Cardinals have played thus far, don’t think they aren’t believing they can compete for national championships. It’s amazing that Bobby Petrino is year 3 and if L’ville wins this game, they probably jump to top-3 in the polls. The football landscape definitely gets shaken with a Cardinal win & it can happen. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Clearly losing to Ole Miss doesn’t hamper Alabama’s championship aspirations. Last year Ole Miss beat Alabama 43-37 in Tuscaloosa & the Tide still won a national championship. In 2014, Ole Miss beat them 23-17 & the Tide still got to the playoffs. With that being said, I’m sure Nick Saban is not too happy with those losses and given how disappointed he was after beating WKU, he’s looking to take out frustrations. Computer Hope
Computer Hope There is a lot riding on this game for Oklahoma. If the Sooners lose to Ohio St., then they’ll fall to 1-2. They can argue they’ve lost to two of the top-3 teams in the country, but a 2-loss team isn’t getting into the playoffs. Their season will effectively be over outside of playing for a Big XII title. For the Buckeyes this is a statement game. They’ve played well to this point but a win here shows how effective Ohio St. can reload the roster. Computer Hope
Computer Hope These two teams haven’t played since 2013 & currently the Irish are on a 3-game winning streak. This will be a good barometer game for both squads. A Michigan St. win certainly gives Spartan Nation some hope at a 13-0 season considering they get both Michigan & Ohio St. at home. For the Irish, a playoff spot is still up for grabs as it would be hard to pass up an 11-1 Notre Dame as one of the final four playoff teams. Computer Hope
Computer Hope There is a lot going on here for both teams. I love how Auburn turned to Sean White as QB & ran the ball EXTREMELY well last week. Their defense is going to shine so if the offense works out then they are formidable. For Texas A&M, a win over Auburn puts them at 3-0 with wins over UCLA & on the road against Auburn. It’s entirely possible that when Texas A&M heads to Tuscaloosa, they could be playing for the SEC west. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Big opportunity here for USC to get back into the national picture with a win over a highly ranked Stanford squad. The Trojans might have been left for dead after the Alabama debacle in Dallas, but I still think USC is a supremely talented team that can play with the Cardinal. Stanford needs a solid win to keep up appearances. The opening week win over Kansas St. wasn’t inspiring and they were on their bye last week. Computer Hope
Computer Hope It’s fun to see Nebraska being relevant in a national game. The Huskers are an experienced team that has had little trouble hammering Fresno St. & Wyoming early on. Oregon will be a completely different animal for them, but a win puts Nebraska in the top-25. As for Oregon, QB Dakota Prukop looks incredibly good so a win over Nebraska in Lincoln gets us talking about the Ducks once again among the nation’s elite programs. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Greg Ward was cleared to play in this game and that’s great news for Houston fans as I think the Bearcats pose a tricky proposition for the Cougars. QB Hayden Moore has done a great job as Cincy QB & can get the Bearcats moving. The one issue I see here for Cincy is that last week Purdue put up 401 passing yards against their defense. Even with a hurt shoulder, the Houston receivers are so good, Greg Ward will find a way. Computer Hope
Computer Hope This is going to be one helluva test for Michigan. A lot of people are overlooking Colorado but Mike MacIntyre has done a great job rebuilding this program. They are THIS close to coming through. Last year UC was 4-8 but 2-5 in close games but 7-5-1 against the spread. They have 18 returning starters back & are 2-0 with a point differential of +84. It’s Michigan in Ann Arbor so I don’t expect them to win, but they’ll play tough. Computer Hope
Computer Hope North Dakota St. has won 5 straight FCS championships and have won their last 5 games against FBS opponents! The Bison are actually on an incredible run these past 5 years posting a record of 71-5! Iowa is unlike any FBS team they’ve seen during that time period and I wouldn’t expect the Hawkeyes to let down, but I also don’t think North Dakota St. is going to get run over. This game might be tighter than we anticipate. Computer Hope
Computer Hope There is quite a bit on the line for Miami-FL in this game. As you could see in Week 1 when Appalachian St. nearly knocked off Tennessee in Knoxville, the Mountaineers are going to come to play & they are going to hit hard. On the other hand, if the Hurricanes can get a blow out win in Kidd Brewer Stadium, what does that say about Miami-FL as they relate to Tennessee? If App State wins, they don’t lose again and go 11-1. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Lots of talk in the ACC about Louisville, Florida St., Clemson and Miami-FL but not so much about Pitt. The Panthers are coming off a solid rivalry win over Penn State. They are an experienced team & Pat Narduzzi is a solid coach. They haven’t gotten much national attention but a win in Stillwater can change that. The Cowboys should be very charged up after the disaster last week that saw them fall to C. Michigan on a bad call. Computer Hope

NFL POWER 32 – WEEK 3 2015

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope How much can you really learn from the Patriots hammering Jacksonville 51-17? The only thing about New England going on the “F YOU TOUR” of the NFL is just how gaudy Tom Brady’s numbers are going to be. Currently he’s on pace to complete 72% of his passes for 5,931 yards & 48TD. He’s ahead of 2013 Peyton Manning except for the TD numbers, but that can change quickly.
#2 Computer Hope Speaking of Peyton Manning, #18 is on pace to complete 64% of his passes for 4,026 yards & 27TD. What’s amazing about that is those numbers aren’t that far away from his 2008 season when Indianapolis went 12-4 & Manning was a 1st team All-Pro QB! Is he better than Rodgers & Brady right this minute? No he isn’t, but how is being the 3rd best QB in the NFL not a huge benefit?
#3 Computer Hope Since we’re on the subject of projections, Aaron Rodgers is on pace to complete 74% of his passes for 4,112 yards & 53TD! I’ve watched Green Bay’s last 2 games & Rodgers at this point is just toying with opponents. It’s almost shocking to a degree when he misses a pass. Moving Clay Matthews inside has been an incredible defensive adjustment. The Packers can argue they are #1.
#4 Computer Hope Yes the 49ers stink but 47-7!? Good grief! Arizona put on a clinic against the 49ers defensively as the Cardinals picked off Colin Kaepernick 4 times & sacked the QB twice. Carson Palmer is on pace to have the best season of his career & is 9-0 in his last 9 starts. Palmer is on pace to complete 64% of his passes for 4,283 yards & 48TD. In Arizona Palmer has a 19-6 record! Crazy!
#5 Computer Hope Miami is in a bad spot with their organization right now but Buffalo probably shouldn’t have went down & pounded them 41-14! That’s crazy! The loss to New England certainly doesn’t look bad & Buffalo has dominated in every other game they’ve played. Tyrod Taylor has been amazing & the defense is great. The McCoy/Williams RB duo is scary good. There are no weaknesses.
#6 Computer Hope You can make an argument that the Dallas win wasn’t that great because the Cowboys were playing without Tony Romo & Dez Bryant. I wouldn’t argue with you, but at the end of the day, the Falcons are 3-0 & have beaten the 3 best teams in the NFC East. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dallas, NY Giants & Philly are all battling for playoff spots by year’s end so this start is impressive.
#7 Computer Hope The Bengals look like the most complete team in football right now given how well Cincinnati has played on both sides of the ball. The one problem for me is that you can argue the Oakland Raiders have been their toughest opponent to date. TE Tyler Eifert is on pace for 69 catches for 816yds & 16TD. Andy Dalton has never had a weapon like this. Is Eifert the key to getting over the hump?
#8 Computer Hope Losing Roethlisberger at this point is killer & I’d expect the Steelers ranking to keep dropping in direct proportion to how many games Michael Vick starts. Vick is kind of an amazing story. The guy is 35 & is starting for a team you could argue is the 2nd or 3rd best team in the AFC! This is his 13th season in the league & he missed 2 because of the dog fighting scandal. What an odd career.
#9 Computer Hope You sort of knew Dallas couldn’t keep going without Romo. The loss to Atlanta was disappointing but somewhat inevitable at the same time. The defense is getting ready to be a lot better. Jeremy Mincey is back this week against New Orleans & Greg Hardy & Rolando McClain will be back next week. Things could come together a little so Dallas needs to beat New Orleans this week.
#10 Computer Hope You can only beat the teams in front of you. Carolina has started the season 3-0 but the wins have come against Houston, Jacksonville & New Orleans. Their combined record is 2-7 & the Panthers have won all 3 games by a combined 23 points. They aren’t exactly tearing the league up, but they are undefeated & I think the defense can play with anyone. TB should ensure 4-0.
#11 Computer Hope You can hardly blame the Chiefs for losing 38-28 in Green Bay, but things don’t get easier for them as they travel to Cincinnati this week. The Chiefs are a solid team & probably the best in the AFC West, but they could definitely start the year 1-3 & potentially 2-4 if they lost in Minnesota. I know injury is probably the reason, but I can’t understand why Jamaal Charles doesn’t rush more.
#12 Computer Hope It took Adrian Peterson a game to warm up, but in the last 2 he’s rushed for 260yds (5.3ypc) & 2TD! At this rate, Peterson is on pace to finish the year with 1,552 yards & 11TD! You can argue that would be the 3rd best season is his career. As for Minnesota, the loss in SF looks worse by the minute, but they have a chance to really put the league on alert if they can win in Denver this week.
#13 Computer Hope Lost in all of the Chip Kelly talk the first couple of weeks is how close Philly played Atlanta & Dallas. Sure the Eagles started 0-2 but Sam Bradford has essentially sucked & DeMarco Murray has been terrible. What people aren’t talking about is just how good the defense is & I trust Kelly to figure out the offense. With Romo & Bryant out this is the best teams in the NFC East. Remember that!
#14 Computer Hope Like the Eagles, the Giants have losses to Atlanta & Dallas but those teams have a combined record of 5-1 at the moment. Last week the Giants hammered Washington 32-21 but this week travel to Buffalo for a game that should be pivotal for both squads. The Giants are close to being complete. They need to play a little better defense & get the offense healthy. The ceiling is high here.
#15 Computer Hope The Raiders are 2-1 after beating Cleveland last week & rookie WR Amari Cooper is on pace to finish his rookie season with 107 catches for 1547 yards & 6TD. It’s safe to say that was a helluva pick! What’s great about Oakland is that they are winning the draft. Cooper & Mario Edwards this year. Khalil Mack & Derek Carr in 2014. Latavius Murray in 2013. I really like this team.
#16 Computer Hope Right now the Ravens are the most unlucky football in the NFL. They’ve started the season 0-3 but those 3 losses have come by a combined 14 points. The Ravens’ “best case” scenario record is 3-0 and the teams they’ve played have a combined record of 8-1! Baltimore is even -1 in TO margin! I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Ravens win 9 straight & be 9-3 when they welcome Seattle.
#17 Computer Hope The Jets need Chris Ivory to be healthy. He’s not the best RB in the world but he’s a solid starter when healthy. I can’t bang the Jets too hard for losing to Philly as I think the Eagles are a very good football team, but they can’t have Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing the ball 58 times per game no matter how much magic you think is hidden in that fantastic beard of his. Still like this team a lot.
#18 Computer Hope The Browns probably aren’t the 18th best team in the NFL but they did get a win over Tennessee & lost to Oakland by just 7 points. I really like HC Mike Pettine & I want to see him do well. He’s taken over an impossible task in Cleveland because he really has no QB & the AFC North is a brutal division with 3 legitimate playoff teams so the Browns really never have an easy week. Tough spot!
#19 Computer Hope The Colts escaped Nashville with a narrow 35-33 win over the Titans. Unfortunately I watched that game & came away being more impressed with the Titans & how good Marcus Mariota could potentially be. The win might have lessened the heat surrounding Chuck Pagano, but this is still a SERIOUSLY flawed football team & now Andrew Luck is out with a shoulder injury. Not good!
#20 Computer Hope The Chargers have to be thinking about the long game right now. The back-to-back losses against Cincinnati & Minnesota are acceptable but they need to take of business the next 2 weeks with home games against Cleveland & a Big Ben-less Pittsburgh team. There are 10 wins on the schedule & possibly 11-12 with some luck. Now if only Philip Rivers could throw a few less interceptions!
#21 Computer Hope Getting blown out by the Bills at home is never a good thing but what haunts the Dolphins is their loss to Jacksonville. If they beat the Jags then Miami is 2-1 with a good shot at 3-1 with a win over the Jets in London. Now they are dogs against the Jets with a real shot at starting the season 2-7! This team is too good for that, but the big question now is whether Joe Philbin finishes the season!
#22 Computer Hope Simply put, this team should be 3-0. If I’m betting on a team to win the AFC South, it’s Tennessee. They should have beaten Indianapolis & the loss to Cleveland is mind boggling. The Titans won the 2015 Draft with Mariota. This is going be like the Luck/RG3 & Manning/Leaf drafts. Tennessee avoided a huge gaffe by Tampa taking Jameis Winston. Mariota is the real deal!
#23 Computer Hope Alfred Blue & DeAndre Hopkins had great games in Houston 19-9 win over Tampa Bay, but this offense can’t get Arian Foster back healthy enough. The Texans only led 10-9 after the 3 quarters so this wasn’t a resounding win. Like Mike Pettine in Cleveland, Bill O’Brien is handcuffed by lackluster QB play. The defense has the ability to be championship quality, but that offense? Good grief!
#24 Computer Hope Losing to the Giants 32-21 is hardly cause for concern especially as it was on the road, but Washington potentially could have won that game. They were statistically better than New York, but being -3 in TO margin for a game is going to get you beat in the NFL. This isn’t a bad football team. I’d love to see them ride the season out with Kirk Cousins & Matt Jones. You might be surprised.
#25 Computer Hope It’s bizarre to see the Rams beat the Seahawks on opening day & then drop a game against the Redskins & then lose a 12-6 game to the Steelers in which Big Ben left due to injury. There seem to be so many pieces here. The defense is really good & the skill position players look good too. If Todd Gurley can play at 100% it’s even better. Sam Bradford didn’t work but I’m not sure Foles will either.
#26 Computer Hope Doing a Power Rankings on merit is difficult because you want to grade the teams based on what they’ve done this year instead of reputation. The Seahawks are no way the 26th best team in the NFL but they’ve lost to the Rams & Packers with their only win coming against an 0-3 Bears team that many think is the worst team in the NFL. Seattle is good but they’ve done NOTHING in ’15.
#27 Computer Hope In their last 2 games against Pittsburgh & Arizona, the 49ers have been outscored 90-25! Colin Kaepernick was absolutely dreadful against Arizona this past week going 9 of 19 with 4 picks! There is talk of SF moving on from Kaepernick after this season but if he’s not a legit contending NFL QB, then another team is going to be trapped with him and that’s unforuntate. SF could start 1-10!
#28 Computer Hope The Jaguars simply didn’t look like an NFL team in their 51-17 defeat at the hands of the Patriots, but Jacksonville isn’t at the point New England is & they shouldn’t be either. What is interesting is that Jax has lost 2 games to Carolina & New England. Those teams are 6-0. Their next 2 games are road games against IND & TB. Two winnable games. The Jaguars could be 4-2 after 6 games!
#29 Computer Hope I still like Chicago. I still like John Fox as HC. I still like Adam Gase as the OC & Vic Fangio as the DC. I think Fangio will figure it out defensively & the skill position talen for the Bears is crazy good. Opening up with losses to Arizona & Green Bay is understandable & Jimmy Claussen wasn’t going to win in Seattle. Those 3 teams are 12-4/13-3 teams. Don’t sleep on the Bears.
#30 Computer Hope The Lions are in the boat Chicago is in but I don’t like the coaching staff nearly as much. My disdain for Jim Caldwell’s coaching abilities has been duly noted & I don’t think Detroit does anything with him roaming the sidelines. This was a playoff team last season & they have a VERY GOOD shot at starting the season 1-8 or even potentially 0-9! Does Caldwell survive the season at 0-9?
#31 Computer Hope Jameis Winston is on pace to finish the season completing 52% of his passes for 3,616 yards with 21TD to 16INT. In his rookie season Cam Newton completed 60% of his passes for 4,051 yards with 21TD to 17INT. Newton also rushed for 756yds & 10TD his rookie season. Winston is on pace to rush for 219yds & 5TD. That isn’t a resounding endorsement for Winston at this point.
#32 Computer Hope The defense is dreadful. There is always so much talk surrounding DC Rob Ryan’s & HC Sean Payton’s interactions on the sidelines to the point you wonder if Ryan is getting fired every week. What’s interesting to me is looking back to Ryan’s history as a DC & where his defenses have ranked in scoring defense. He’s essentially a below average DC with one good year (2013) on his resume.

2015 NFL WEEK 3 – PREVIEW

ROAD QUICK THOUGHTS HOME
Computer Hope How’s this for nuts: if Kansas City & San Diego lose (which is likely) & Oakland wins (again likely), the Raiders will be 2-1 & in sole possession of 2nd place in the West! A lot is going on in this one. KC is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Denver in Arrowhead & is sitting at 1-1. The Packers are 2-0 but haven’t looked overly dominant in wins against Chicago & Seattle. Green Bay is favored here, but KC’s defense can be salty at times & should keep them in this one until the end. Super Bowl I rematch to boot! Computer Hope
Computer Hope This could be a telling game for the 49ers. In week 1 they looked amazing in a 20-3 win over Minnesota, but last week they looked horrific in a 43-18 hammering at the hands of the Steelers. Arizona is MUCH BETTER this year than they were last & Carson Palmer is healthy. If the 49ers can be competitive & potentially pull off the upset, then Week 1 won’t look like the exception instead of the rule. If the Cardinals come out guns blazing, the NFC might be on notice that the road to the Super Bowl comes through Phoenix. Computer Hope
Computer Hope How is this for interesting: the Cowboys & Falcons have played the same two teams (Philly & NY Giants) and both have won both games. Dallas outscored the Giants & Eagles 47-36 while the Falcons outscored the NFC East pair 50-44. There is some interest to this game. The Cowboys will be playing with Tony Romo & Dez Braynt while the Falcons will be playing for legitimacy. New HC Dan Quinn has done very well so far in 2 games. Going 3-0 against the NFC East would be a helluva start. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Very intrigued here because Pittsburgh’s O-Line hasn’t been the best while St. Louis’ defense line is formidable. The Rams are somewhat interesting in that they opened up at home against Seattle & got a victory but took a road loss last week to the Redskins! What the? I think people are sleeping on Pittsburgh a bit. They played New England tough to open up the season & then absolutely HAMMERED the 49ers. Le’Veon Bell also returns this week so expect the Steelers to play very well. Computer Hope
Computer Hope A better game then you might first expect, the playoff implications between SD & Minnesota are huge. It’s not that they play in the same conference, but these teams are similar in that they play in divisions they are VERY UNLIKELY to win, yet both are legit playoff threats that need wins where they can get them. Both teams enter the game 1-1 while Denver & Green Bay are likely to be 3-0 when the Week 3 dust settles. I’d rather be 2-1 instead of 1-2. Love the McCoy v. Zimmer matchup as well. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Detroit is coming home after opening the season with back-to-back road losses to San Diego & Minnesota. At 0-2 the Lions can pretty much kiss the playoffs good bye should they lose a 3rd straight. I’m not sure when the last time an 0-3 team made the playoffs but it’s been awhile. The Lions almost pulled off a win in San Diego but I’m not sure this week will be that close. HC Gary Kubiak opened up the offense a little bit for Peyton & Detroit’s defense hasn’t been so hot. That’s bad for Detroit. Computer Hope
Computer Hope There is a lot going on here. Like the other 0-2 teams, Baltimore is teetering on their season being finished before it ever starts. Given how Cincinnati & Pittsburgh have been playing, the Ravens can ill-afford to lose this game, but note also a loss here puts the Ravens 4 games behind the Bengals due to tiebreakers! The Ravens can forget about the AFC North title with a loss. For the Bengals, I think most experienced fans are waiting for them to show that killer instinct. A win here is a step in that direction. Computer Hope
Computer Hope The line could be -20 in this one and I’m not sure I’d take Jacksonville. Oddly enough the Jags are coming off a 23-20 home win over Miami! The confidence has to be sky high! New England is simply too good here. The Jaguars are basically in limbo with a QB that isn’t going to make it. The defense is pretty decent so it’ll be interesting to see how well the Jaguars can hold Brady & the Patriots offense, but ultimately Jacksonville can in no way score enough points to wint he games. It’s a blowout. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Miami HC Joe Philbin is a dead man walking. The Week 1 over the Redskins is questionable & now last week the Dolphins were beaten by Jacksonville! In a state where the Jags & Bucs reside, Miami can’t even be considered the best team within their own borders! Philbin could turn this around & take some heat off himself with a win over Buffalo, but I’m not sure that happens. The Bills are a solid & will be motivated coming off a home loss to New England where Sexy Rexy said he was outcoached. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Like the Seahawks, Texans, Ravens & Lions, the Giants are 0-2 & playing at home with their backs against the wall knowing they can’t start 0-3 & realistically expect to make the playoffs. I think on paper the Giants are the best team in the East right now (remember no Romo or Bryant for Dallas) so they need to start winning as the East is up for grabs. That isn’t to discount the Redskins though. I actually like this Redskins team quite a bit. They are a bit like Houston – good but QB handicapped. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Both teams come in 0-2 but without Jay Cutler the Bears have no chance to escape Seattle with an improbable win. Their odds of winning with Cutler where next to nothing, but with Claussen under center, their odds are non-existant. I’m not that worried about Seattle’s 0-2 start. The loss in St. Louis is odd but it was Week 1 without Kam Chancellor. The loss in Week 2 came in Green Bay. You expect the Packers to win at Lambeau. Starting the season 1-2 isn’t the end of the world. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Drew Brees isn’t playing in this one which means Carolina is improving to 3-0 which I NEVER would have thought at the beginning of the season. If the Saints lose they’ll drop to 0-3 while the Panthers & potentially the Falcons improve to 3-0. I don’t see it for the Saints who will miss the playoffs for the 2nd straight year & for the 3rd time in 4 seasons. As for Carolina, the defense is for real so they are going to be in a lot of football games. The defense makes them the South favorites. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Baby steps! Last week’s win over Baltimore was HUGE for the Raiders. Not only did it give them a win over a big time opponent, but it also set the Raiders up well. Their next two games are road dates but the first is against Cleveland & the next is against Chicago who will be without Jay Cutler. The Raiders have a legit shot at starting the season 3-1 before hosting Denver. Oakland is probably the worst team in the AFC West, but Oakland could get to 7-9/8-8! That’s a tremendous season! Computer Hope
Computer Hope I don’t think anyone before the season would have had Philly at 0-2 & the Jets at 2-0 entering this game. The Eagles are against a wall here which might make it very difficult for the Jets. If Philly drops to 0-3 the playoff dream might be finished before it got started. Potentially more interesting is how the Jets deal with their recent success. With a home game on the slate against an 0-2 Eagles team, the Jets could wind up 3-0! Can New York handle that sort of success this early in the season? Computer Hope
Computer Hope A couple of quick losses have the Texans at 0-2 to start the season, but I’m a big believer in Bill O’Brien so I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Houston didn’t blow the barn doors off Tampa Bay in this one. Houston is crippled by their lack of QB play and it’ll be interesting to see how they go about it. With the Colts at 0-2, Houston has a chance to steal the division away, but they need to start winning games. Tampa could improve to 2-1, but I think that opportunity is going to escape them. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Indianapolis has started the year 0-2. They started the season 0-2 last year & ended up in the AFC Championship game, but the Colts haven’t looked so hot in losses to the Bills & Jets with the Jets loss being the most alarming due to it being in Indy. The Titans of course could make a HUGE run in the South with a win here because they’d effectively be 3 games up on the Colts with 13 games to play. That’s a huge advantage but with a rookie under center, who knows what will happen? Computer Hope

NCAA POWER-25 WEEK 3 2015

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope The biggest win of the year eclipsing Michigan St.’s win over Oregon, Ole Miss went into Tuscaloosa and beat up Alabama 43-37. That score looks close but Ole Miss never trailed in the game & led 43-24 midway through the 4th quarter before the Tide scored a couple of inconsequential TDs to make it 43-37. This really is the formula for Ole Miss! The receivers are big & fast & as long as QB Chad Kelly doesn’t make mistakes, it’s going to be hard to stop this offense. Hats off to the defense as well. Ole Miss forced Alabama into 5 turnovers! Even Alabama has a hard time winning when they are -5 in TO margin. The schedule sets up now for Ole Miss. The remaining road games aren’t tough meaning 12-0 is a very real possibility.
#2 Computer Hope Solid work for Michigan St. coming out & posting a 35-21 win over Air Force. The Falcons were playing without their starting QB Nate Romine which made the road a little easier. Although the score doesn’t look particularly dominating, Air Force is one of those run option squads that is hard to dominate. The Spartans were up 28-7 at the half & 35-7 midway through the 3rd so the blowout was on before Mark Dantonio took the pedal off the gas. Connor Cook carved up the Air Force secondary to the tune of 247yds/4TD but Michigan St. didn’t run the ball particularly well. The Spartans averaged just 1.8ypc which is uncharacteristic for the Madre London/LJ Scott duo. MSU should be 6-0 when they head to Ann Arbor!
#3 Computer Hope In two games, LSU RB Leonard Fournette has rushed for 387yds/6TD on 47 carries for an 8.2ypc average! Over a 13 game season, Fournette is on pace to rush for 2516yds & score 39TD! It’s pretty safe to say we are looking at a Heisman winner right here & the best part is that LSU missed their first game against McNeese St! Fournette probably would have rushed for 200 in that game! LSU’s first 2 wins have come against Auburn & Mississippi State. They aren’t Texas A&M & Alabama but those are 2 quality wins & remember that LSU didn’t get their tune up game in Week 1. The offense is 75% rush right now which it should be given how good Fournette is & the defense is solid. I’m not high on Les Miles, but he’s nailing it so far in 2015.
#4 Computer Hope You won’t find any rankings that have Northwestern this high, but how could they not be? They open the season with a 16-6 win over Stanford in Evanston. This is the same Stanford team that just went into the Coliseum & beat a top-10 ranked USC team 41-31. Last week, Northwestern went on the road to Durham & beat Duke 19-10. This is the same Duke squad that has gone 19-8 over the past 2 years with an ACC Coastal title. If you replace Stanford with USC and you replace Duke with Virginia Tech, do the Wildcats merit a higher ranking? Northwestern’s defense has been particularly impressive to me. LB Anthony Walker & DE Dean Lowry are playing like All-Americans at this point. This team can win A LOT of games!
#5 Computer Hope QB Baker Mayfield put on a clinic against Tulsa last weekend! GOOD GRIEF!!!! Mayfield was 32/38 passing for 487yds & 4TD! He also rushed for 85yds & 2TD making him responsible for 6 of Oklahoma’s 7 TDs! Samaje Perine also rushed for 152yds/1TD as the Sooners rank up almost 800 total yards of offense! That’s the good news! The bad news is that Mayfield has had unbelievable games against Tulsa & Akron but didn’t look so sharp against Tennessee, the caliber of opponent they’ll play in the Big XII. Also despite winning, Oklahoma gave up 38pts & 603 yards of offense to Tulsa! What’s Baylor going to do!? Bob Stoops has time to work out the kinks. Baylor & TCU don’t show up on the schedule until mid/late November.
#6 Computer Hope An enormous win for the Irish, beating a ranked Georgia Tech team 30-22 to, in my mind, establish the Irish as serious playoff contenders. To give you an idea of just how amazing this win was, note that Navy & Georgia Tech run pretty much that same triple-option offense. ND has had issues with it the last 2 seasons against Navy beating the Middies 49-39 last year & 38-34 in 2013. They were wins, but Navy gouged the defense for a lot of points & a lot of yards. This year against a Georgia Tech team superior to those Navy squads of 2013-2014, the Irish had a 30-7 lead with 1 minute remaining in the 4th quarter. That’s domination. GT would score a couple of garbage TDs in the final minute, but Notre Dame routed Georgia Tech.
#7 Computer Hope To be the champ you gotta beat the champ & so far Ohio St. is 3-0, but it’s a soft 3-0. The 20-13 win over Northern Illinois looks brutal, especially coming in Columbus! The offense produced a single TD and that was from a JT Barrett, not Cardale Jones the starter. Ohio St. needed a defensive pick-6 to ice the game & even then NIU had the entire 4th quarter to try & tie it up after going down 20-10 in the 3rd. They managed just a FG. Ezekiel Elliott ran for over 100yds but wasn’t dominant. Maybe Ohio St. is facing the emotional let down after winning a championship. How hard is it to get up for N.Illinois when you are the national champs? If that’s the case they’d better be on upset alert because the Buckeyes have it easy for a while.
#8 Computer Hope A win is a win is a win. UCLA escaped BYU at home 24-23, but the Cougars are a solid team regardless so even the 1pt win is impressive in my opinion. QB Josh Rosen came out guns blazing in the opener against Virginia. The true frosh made the college game look easy, going 28/35 for 351yds/3TD/0INT. Things have been a little tougher since college coaches got the game tape of the Virginia romp. Since UVa, Rosen has played against UNLV & BYU but has gone 33/65 (50.8%) for 329yds/2TD/4INT. UCLA has been winning the last 2 weeks but it’s been in spite of Rosen & not because of. Where Rosen has slipped, RB Paul Perkins has remained steady. Over the last 2 games Perkins has rushed for 370yds/3TD at 8.41ypc.
#9 Computer Hope DE Myles Garrett picked up 3.5 sackes in Texas A&M’s 44-27 win over Nevada in College Station. The 3.5 upped Garrett’s total to 5.5 which leads college football & Texas A&M’s 15 sacks o the year is also tops. Daeshon Hall’s 4 sacks ranks 6th in the FBS. What’s sort of interesting about this is that Texas A&M ranks 110th in sacks allowed! Looking at sack differential at the collegiate level isn’t as predictive as it is in the NFL because of the disparity in schedule, but A&M has had a couple of games against Ball St. & Nevada & has allowed 7 sacks in those games. This is nitpicking to be sure & I find it more interesting than anything, but if there is a weakness emerging from Texas A&M’s narrative, it might be their pass protection.
#10 Computer Hope The loss to Ole Miss is tough but it’s not like Alabama’s season is over. Ole Miss has to prove they can win & if Alabama wins out to 11-1, they still have a great shot at winning the West & the SEC title. Going 12-1 as SEC Champs isn’t going to prevent the Tide from winning a national championship so all of this talk about Alabama being a  fading dynasty is ridiculous. At the end of the day, Ole Miss is a legit top-10 & possibly top-5 team. You don’t beat those teams when you are -5 in TO margin. Even if you’re Alabama. The good news is that Alabama looked good statistically but they threw the ball 59 times! I don’t know what Lane Kiffin’s plan was, but Alabama doesn’t throw the ball 59 times. Especially with an unsettled QB position.
#11 Computer Hope A lot of rankings had BYU falling pretty far, but how in the world can you justify BYU falling far & keeping UCLA in the top-10? BYU came THIS CLOSE to beating the Bruins in Los Angeles & failed 24-23. The luck sort of ran out for the Cougars, but it wasn’t lucky. BYU never trailed in this game until 3+ minutes left when UCLA’s Nate Starks scored & took UCLA to a 24-23 lead. The Cougars had 3 minutes left to answer with a FG or TD but Tanner Mangum couldn’t muster up the BYU magic & the Cougars fell to 2-1. This week against Michigan will be tough but BYU really has a huge shot at 11-1 with a 1pt road loss to UCLA. What gets really interesting is if UCLA goes 13-0 & wins the Pac 12. How does BYU not make the playoffs?
#12 Computer Hope Another week, another TCU win as this past week the Frogs took down SMU 56-37. I have TCU a lot lower in my rankings more as a function of who they haven’t played. So far TCU had trouble against Minnesota, hammered Stephen F. Austin & then gave up 37 points to SMU. It’s TCU & Trevone Boykin so they definitely deserve some slack, but if I’m ranking the teams based on on-field performance for the 2015 season, then TCU hasn’t shown to be a top-5 squad. TCU lost a lot on defense last year, and like Oklahoma, the defense has to be of concern this year especially after giving up 37 to SMU. The Big XII has some high-octane offenses starting with Texas Tech who TCU plays this week in Lubbock. We’ll find out a lot here.
#13 Computer Hope Well hello there Grayson Lambert! Brice Ramsey was trying to make the UGA QB situation a bit of competition but Lambert put those hopes to rest as he TORCHED South Carolina! Lambert ended the day 24 of 25 for 330yds & 3TD! The Gamecock secondary was no match for UGA’s barrage of receiving options with Malcolm Mitchell leading the way with 8 catches for 122yds & a TD. Nick Chubb also was the same ol’ Nick Chubb rushing for 159yds & 2TD! I talked about what Leonard Fournette is on pace for this season, but Chubb should not be overlooked. Chubb is on pace for 2,028 rushing yards & 26TD! It’s crazy to think that the top-2 vote getters for the Heisman might very well be RBs coming from the SEC!
#14 Computer Hope Baylor was on bye last week and this week they play Rice so once again we really won’t get a handle on what Baylor is and isn’t. The big boys in the Big XII are somewhat frustrating in their non-conference schedule. Oklahoma did well by traveling to Tennessee and Texas of course went to South Bend, the but the big dogs the last couple of seasons have been TCU & Baylor. The Bears toughest OOC game came against SMU while TCU’s biggest obstacle was a road date against Minnesota. Michigan St. is beating Oregon. Ole Miss is beating Alabama. Oklahoma is beating Tennessee. LSU is winning at Mississippi State. What is TCU & Baylor doing? Well they sure are hammering Rice & Stephen F. Austin! You’re better than that!
#15 Computer Hope The Ducks got back to business this week in Eugene knocking off Georgia St. 61-28. The more I watch Oregon the more I sense something is off. Michigan St. dominated that game. I don’t care what the score was. Oregon now has wins over Georgia St. & Eastern Washington but they’ve given 35PPG against those opponents. Things are going to toughen up considerably for Oregon once they get into Pac 12 play. Utah comes to down this weekend and maybe Oregon still has an advantage because they are at home & that makes sense, but Utah’s defense is very tough so the going won’t be easy. Plus, Utah’s offense isn’t horrible & Oregon’s defense has been awful. Can Oregon simply out score Pac 12 opponents without any regard for defense?
#16 Computer Hope Kevin Hogan came to play & Stanford’s ground game kept USC off the field in Stanford’s 41-31 upset victory. Here is how amazing time of possession can be. USC’s offense scored 1.51pts per minute of possession. Stanford’s offense scored 1.04pts per minute of possession. The problem for USC was that Stanford had the ball for 40 minutes compared to 20 for the Trojans. If you believe Northwestern is a top flight team (I do) then ranking Stanford 16th might be a little low especially considering the talent level of USC and the fact that Stanford beat them in the Coliseum. David Shaw has the formula now. Keep Hogan under control, keep turnovers to a minimum & grind. Stanford has no tough road games so it could get interesting.
#17 Computer Hope The Bulldogs rebounded after the LSU loss with a 62-13 win over Northwestern State. This was pretty much the game you’d expect. QB Dak Prescott was 10/11 for 227yds & 2TD. The Bulldogs were up 34-6 at halftime. They used 3 different QBs, 9 different rushers & 10 different receivers. What really sticks out to me about this game is that Mississippi St.’s defense did what it should do. It recorded 4 sacks & 13 tackles for loss. We’ve seen a lot of teams this year not play their best defensive games against inferior opponents much to my consternation. This didn’t happen with Mississippi St. which shows me they are taking games seriously. The road is brutal for this team but they are top-25 & I wouldn’t want to play them at all.
#18 Computer Hope The 20-17 win over Louisville isn’t what I thought it would be even with it being a road game. The game was 10-10 late in the 3rd quarter! Clemson can only hope the win looks better & better as Louisville starts winning games, but the Cardinals QB situation is far from settled and I’d suspect they have one of those up & down years because of it. On the other side, DeShawn Watson looked pretty good outside of a couple of picks, RB Wayne Gallman played out of his mind & the Clemson rush defense was on its A game holding Louisville to just 19 yards rushing & 0.7ypc! Clemson has a chance to shoot up the rankings over the next 4 weeks. They are off this week but then have Notre Dame, Georgia Tech & BC at home.
#19 Computer Hope GRITTY 14-0 win over Boston College on Chestnut Hill. What most impressed me about this game is that QB Everett Golson didn’t turn the ball over. During his time at Notre Dame, Golson seemingly always had a pick or two waiting to happen, but to see him play controlled against a solid Boston College defense was surprising and at the same time relieving to most Florida St. fans. BC’s defensive front-7 looks outstanding so I can’t fault FSU for scoring 7pts, but note in this game that BC is basically breaking in a new starting QB and 5 new starters on the O-Line. They were -2 in TO margin in this game & still had it within 7 going into the 4th quarter. I don’t know if that says more about Florida St. or more about Boston College.
#20 Computer Hope I’m not going to hammer Georgia Tech too bad for losing 30-22 in South Bend to Notre Dame. On the one hand, the Irish might be a legit top-5 team that doesn’t lose a game all season. As in the case of BYU, if GT holds out and runs the table to 12-1 (they can) while ND goes 12-0 & makes the playoffs, can you penalize a 12-1 GT squad for losing by 8 points on the road to an undefeated Irish team? I don’t think you can. On the other hand, GT ran up against arguably the best defense in college football. The Irish have 5 legit potential All-Americans and LB Jaylen Smith is the best defensive player in the nation! Nobody is going to score in ND easily. The Yellow Jackets won’t face a defense that tough for the remainder of the season.
#21 Computer Hope Tennessee got back to business after the Oklahoma loss, beating Western Carolina 55-10. The Vols jumped out to a 34-0 lead & had it 41-3 at halftime. It was 55-3 at the end of the 3rd quarter. I will note the differences here in defense with Mississippi State. The Bulldogs faced an inferior opponents & dominated them defensively. Tennessee did the same thing but the D did not get a single sack & only had 3 tackles for loss. I don’t like it. I will say that I think it ludicrous for Tennessee not to be ranked this week. Their only loss was a 31-24 OT loss to Oklahoma who people are now looking at as a top-10 team. UT took that team to the brink (they should have won that game if not for a collapse) & they aren’t a top-25 school?
#22 Computer Hope You could make an argument that Florida should be 1-2. They beat ECU by 7 points at home & then squeaked out a defensive battle in Lexington against Kentucky 14-9. On the other hand, Florida 3-0 with a road win at Kentucky which is more impressive than it used to be. Also note that Jim McElwain took over Colorado St. & in his first year they were 4-8. In his 2nd they won a bowl game. In this 3rd they went 10-3 & he was MWC coach of the year. He’s inherited a lot more talent in Gainesville than he ever had in Fort Collins so we’ll see what he does with it. He can coach that’s for sure. Florida’s upcoming schedule is Tennessee, Ole Miss, @Missouri, @LSU and then Georgia in Jacksonville. That’s a helluva test for McElwain.
#23 Computer Hope Don’t look now but Iowa might be the best team in the Big 10 West. Iowa St. isn’t going to challenge in the Big XII but they are a solid football team led by an awesome coach in Paul Rhoads. I know Pittsburgh is without stud RB James Connor, but I think the Panthers are going to challenge in the ACC Coastal I guarantee it. Those wins don’t look amazing on their face, but they are good solid quality wins. It always seems like the Hawkeyes in the Kirk Ferentz era has never really been able to get over that 9-3/8-4 hump. This year the Hawkeyes avoid Michigan St., Michigan & Ohio St. out of the East. If Corey Clement can’t be 100% this year then Iowa can run the table. I think they are a dark horse candidate for the playoffs.
#24 Computer Hope Sure it was just a 45-44 win over Texas who has been less than stellar so far this season, but I really like what Sonny Dykes is doing at Cal and QB Jared Goff is a legit Heisman contender. If the Longhorns are some type of barometer, then Cal might not be up to the level of Notre Dame, Ohio St., Alabama & Ole Miss (ND did hammer Texas 38-3), but the Bears are probably in the 2nd tier of teams behind them. If there is a knock on California it might be that their defense isn’t amazing. It’s a fair assessment, but at the same time Texas had to come out play motivated football at some point. Charlie Strong is under immense heat as the Longhorns keep crashing & the talent level is still high. I think this was a great road win for California!
#25 Computer Hope Like I mentioned in the Stanford comments, USC’s offense played exceedingly well against the Cardinal, but the defense simply couldn’t get Stanford off the field. The Stanford, Northwestern & USC triangle is tough for the rankings. I don’t see how you can have USC ahead of Stanford & if you believe those two teams are great then how in the world can you not have Northwestern ranked very high? Against Stanford, QB Cody Kessler was once again outstanding & the rushing attack averaged 5.5ypc! JuJu Smith caught 8 balls for 153yds & a TD. USC’s defense has to get better. It’s that simple. Kessler by the way is on pace to end the season with 4000 passing yards & 43TD. Almost 2000 of those yards will go to JuJu Smith!

DROPPING OUT

AUBURN TIGERS (previously #9): Loved Auburn at the beginning of the year but that team is imploding. They are getting rid of Jeremy Johnson as their starting QB. Jacksonville St. took them to OT and an 0-3 Louisville team would have beaten them if given enough time. If it wasn’t for Arkansas, this looks like the worst team in the SEC West!

UTAH UTES (previously #18): They haven’t done anything wrong but I couldn’t find them a spot & I probably have them too low. The Michigan wins looks better & better and I think the win over Utah St. is a really good one. They travel to Eugene this week. A win there & Utah will find itself in the top-10.

KENTUCKY WILDCATS (previously #21): Lost at home to Florida 14-9. I still really like Kentucky but the home win over Florida would have been a bust out win & potentially even a program changing win as UK potentially could have been 6-0 going into Starkville.

MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (previously #25): Beat Kent St. 10-7? I loved how the Gophers battled TCU in the opener and you could argue Minnesota should be 3-0 with a win over TCU. On the other hand, you can argue Minnesota got lucky against TCU & should be 0-3 after close wins against Kent St. & Colorado State.

2015 NCAA WEEK 3 – BIG GAMES

ROAD QUICK THOUGHTS HOME
Computer Hope Ole Miss has shown the ability to play defense this year but the real trick will be seeing how they handle Alabama stud RB Derrick Henry. Remember that while Ole Miss has an exceptional offense, Nick Saban can counter that by keeping them off the field. You don’t hear about in the media all that much, but ball control is absolutely vital to winning football. The Alabama defense is looking for statements. Locking up Ole Miss would be a huge statement to make & put the SEC on notice. Computer Hope
Computer Hope I think this game really catapults either squad nationally. Notre Dame has historically struggled with this sort of team during Brian Kelly’s tenure, but the loss of Malik Zaire or Tarean Folston doesn’t affect the defense one bit. I think the Irish score, but the biggest point of emphasis will be Notre Dame’s ability to stop Paul Johnson’s triple option. To this point GT hasn’t had to rely on QB Justin Thomas, but you almost get the feeling Thomas has been waiting for this game to put his game face on. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Keep an eye on Auburn’s rush defense. Through 2 games, War Eagle ranks 97th in the nation in rush defense & Leonard Fournette is coming to town. Fournette bruised up Mississippi St. last week to the tune of 159yds & 3TD on 28 carries. The beating was slow & methodical. Also note that LSU’s defense pretty much kept Dak Prescott in check & Jeremy Johnson isn’t nearly the QB Prescott is. Given how Auburn has played early & that this game is in Baton Rouge? Auburn finally slips. Computer Hope
Computer Hope I think most people by now would have thought BYU would be 0-2. Instead they are 2-0 & you can’t help but notice the magic surrounding this football team. The Cougars were going to be good this year regardless of how they played at Nebraska & Boise State. What we didn’t know was that Taysum Hill would be out for the season against Nebraska & Taylor Mangum would become a glory magnet with 2 huge wins. Sure Missouri & Michigan are left but a win at UCLA sets BYU up for 12-0! Computer Hope
Computer Hope Stanford looked better last week against Central Florida in a 31-7 win, but that still can’t erase the 16-6 disaster they posted against Northwestern. USC tuned up Arkansas St. & Idaho in preparation for Pac 12 play. I don’t think either team could be entering the game from more opposite directions. I think we can learn a lot here. If Stanford holds tough then you kind of have to wonder just how good Northwestern could be or rather if the loss was just a blip on Stanford’s season. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Just think about 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2014 to realize how important this game is for Georgia. Sure the Bulldogs got a win in 2013 but Spurrier seems to own Mark Richt & Georgia in recent times. There is no way Georgia should lose this game. They are more talented. They are playing between the hedges. There are a number of other reasons but throw them out. Georgia doesn’t have great QB play so if the Gamecocks defense shows up against the run then who knows what happens! Computer Hope
Computer Hope Blake Kemp & the East Carolina passing attack torched the Gators last week although Florida did walk away with a 31-24 win. Kentucky has been winning games with a solid rushing attack behind Stanley Williams & JoJo Kemp. One thing Florida is doing well is playing outstanding rush defense so it’ll be interesting to see if UK QB Patrick Towles can make some plays. Could you imagine saying Kentucky is out to a 3-0 start with wins over Florida & South Carolina? In football? Computer Hope
Computer Hope I was really high on Pittsburgh before the season began because I thought Pat Narduzzi could do a good job with all the Panthers had returning. All-American RB James Connor was knocked out of the season in Week 1 but Qadree Ollison has stepped up in a HUGE way! I still like Pittsburgh but this game will be telling. Pitt’s defense stepped up against Akron but the Panthers might have a QB controversy on their hands. As for the Hawkeyes, a win is huge as the West is wide open! Computer Hope
Computer Hope Can Arkansas bounce back from a humiliating home loss to Toledo? Whether you like Texas Tech or not, the Red Raiders are going to score some points. Tech has scored 64PPG in their first 2 games & QB Patrick Mahomes has already thrown 8TD passes! Arkansas had tremendous issues running the football on the Rockets which is almost impossible to imagine. Texas Tech ranks 121st in rush defense so if the Razorback defense can hold up, Arkansas should run wild. Computer Hope
Computer Hope A really interesting game. It’s not among powerful teams but intriguing for what it can tell us. Duke has been flawless in their first 2 games outscoring their opponents 92-7. Northwestern has the huge opening win over Stanford. Duke QB Thomas Sirk has been almost perfect & the Blue Devils have some intriguing players. Duke is 19-8 over the past 2 seasons with an ACC Coastal title. This won’t be a walk, but a Wildcat win further solidifies Northwestern. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Texas is in complete shambles at this point. After the 38-3 drubbing at the hands of Notre Dame, HC Charlie Strong completely shakes up the staff. The following week Texas wins an uninspiring home opener over Rice & the school fires the athletic director. Maybe getting rid of Mack Brown wasn’t such a fantastic idea even if he wasn’t winning national championships. I love this game for Cal because it’s a resume builder & Cal can start turning some heads. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Louisville hasn’t looked so good starting the season 0-2 but the Cardinals have lost both games by 10 points so they are this close to being 2-0 & if that were the case we’d be thinking about this game in a completely different light. Let’s face it, Louisville has a freshman QB in Lamar Jackson who is struggling mightily. Two of his starting receivers are out & Louisville is allowing 32.5PPG. This is a game Clemson should win by 20. Let’s see if they do it. Computer Hope
Computer Hope The opening home loss to BYU was a gut-punch for the Cornhuskers but Nebraska fans might be clamoring for Bo Pellini should they lose to Miami-FL and start the season 1-2! I think it’s amazing how Nebraska has fallen by the way side as a national power. It’s not unlike Miami-FL has done since Butch Davis left Coral Gables. This is a great game when you think historically, but not so much today. I’d like to see the Hurricanes get to 3-0 & get noticed. Computer Hope
Computer Hope I don’t think Michigan St. is going to turn around and lose a home game to Air Force after securing the biggest win in college football this year, but I do think this will be a tough game. Michigan St. is exceptional with their run defense & Air Force runs that triple option & they do it exceedingly well. Because of this I think Air Force can keep it close & cause the Spartans some trouble. These games can be bruising so keep an eye on Sparty’s injury report as they head into B10 play. Computer Hope
Computer Hope It’s worth noting that over the past 5 seasons, Northern Illinois is 57-13 with 3 MAC Championships. That isn’t to say they’ll beat Ohio St., but NIU isn’t your typical run of the mill MAC doormat that the Big 10 so likes to dominate. Drew Hare is a solid QB running that system & NIU has looked good in their first 2 games. I will say that the last time the Huskies faced a ranked opponent was 2011 when Wisconsin beat them 49-7. I’d expect the same, but maybe NIU can stick around. Computer Hope
Computer Hope I love this game. I’d love it even more if they would just play the home & home instead of going to Denver. Seeing the Buffaloes in Ft. Collins is an awesome sight plus it puts the rivalry moreso in the students’ hands than the alumni in Denver. I think Colorado St. is one of those programs just under the radar that needs a great head coach that wants to be there for awhile. They are a Dan Hawkins or Chris Petersen or Gary Patterson away from becoming the new Boise State. Computer Hope
Computer Hope Rutgers is an absolute dumpster fire at this point. They were this way early with all their player dismissals & suspensions but now HC Kyle Flood has been suspended for inappropriately contacting a faculty member our players’ grades! The Big 10 has to feel awful allowing the Scarlet Knights admission but there they are. Given all that is going on with Rutgers, nothing less than a blowout for Penn St. is acceptable but can they do it? Coaching Penn St. is a little tougher than coaching Vanderbilt! Computer Hope
