NCAA POWER 25 – 2017 WEEK 3

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Colorado St. 41-23. The Rams scored some garbage TDs in the 4th quarter that made the final score appear closer than it actually was. This is the Alabama formula on full display. So far the Tide have ran the ball 120 times compared to 66 rushing attempts. It was the same against Colorado State. I’m surprised the defense is allowing 13.3PPG, but as you saw against Florida St., when the defense shows up fully motivated, opposing offenses don’t score.
#2 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Tulane 56-14. Tulane actually played pretty well in the first quarter being tied with the Sooners 14-14, but over the next 3 quarters, Oklahoma outscored the Green Wave 42-0! The Baker Mayfield show was on full display as he went 17/27 for 331yds/4TD without a pick. Mayfield is on pace for 4,881 yards/47TD. Given what happened to Kansas St. on Saturday & TCU giving up 30+ to SMU, it really looks like Bedlam! is the only thing standing from 12-0!
#3 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Louisville 47-21. Back to back wins against Auburn & Louisville with Louisville being played on the road is easily the most impressive two weeks of football by any team in the nation thus far & Clemson could definitely make a case for being the #1 team in the nation. The Tigers defense flexed hard last night against Lamar Jackson recording 4 sacks, 7 tackles for loss & 5 passes defended. Kelly Bryant is playing well & at this point I don’t see a weakness.
#4 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Texas 27-24 (2OT). How good is USC? It needed double OT to beat a Texas team that gave up 51 to Maryland in their season opener. Yes the Stanford win looks good but Stanford just lost to San Diego State! USC also had a little bit of trouble against a 1-2 W.Michigan squad. I think the reason you rank the Trojans high is because of Sam Darnold. There is enough talent here to never get blown out & I don’t think you bet against Darnold in a close game.
#5 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Georgia St. 56-0. Another week another blow out win for the Nittany Lions but at this point who have they really beat? Two of their wins have come against Georgia St. & Akron. The other against a Pittsburgh team that was destroyed by Oklahoma State. Those 3 teams have a combined record of 2-6 & none of them are a bowl team. Yes Saquon Barkley is on pace for at least 2400 yards from scrimmage but good grief Penn St. play a decent opponent!
#6 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Air Force 29-13. The academies are a lot tougher than people imagine & Air Force is a pretty good football team that can run the football. They tried like crazy to get things going on the ground against Michigan, but the Falcons only managed 168 yards on 49 carries which translates into a great showing defensively for the Wolverines. Wilton Speight is going to have to make some plays at some point though. The Florida wins looks really good now.
#7 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Fresno St. 48-16. Last week Fresno St. faced Alabama! This week they had Washington! They got two playoff teams in back to back week & were outscored 89-26. In some ways that feels like a win! The average score is 45-13 and it seems as if the Bulldogs should have been beaten by a greater margin. QB Jake Browning was almost perfect in this game going 19/22 for 255yds/4TD & no picks. Washington hasn’t played anyone yet, but Colorado is up next.
#8 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Pittsburgh 59-21. Is #10 too low for the Cowboys? Last week Penn St. hosted Pittsburgh and beat the Panthers by 19 points. This week Oklahoma St. travels to Pittsburgh and beats them by 38. Mason Rudolph finally threw an interception yesterday but he also almost threw for 500 yards & had 5TD. The Cowboys had 4 receivers go over 100yds & Justice Hill ran for 2TD and 91yds. The weapons are outstanding here & OK-State should probably be top-5.
#9 Computer Hope Last Week Beat BYU 40-6. Brigham Young is terrible & they have no offense, but the Badgers are completely thrashing teams at this point. Have they played anyone yet? Not really, but Alex Hornibrook is a darn near perfect QB & the Badgers can run with Jonathan Taylor & Chris James. The Badgers are always going to be able to run so if Hornibrook doesn’t make mistakes, they’ll be fine. How about the LB crew from Wisconsin? TJ Edwards, Chris Orr & Leon Jacobs?!!!
#10 Computer Hope Last Week Beat LSU 37-7. WOW! I thought the Bulldogs could win this game in Starkville and I also am getting the feeling that this team has a chance to mimic what the 2014 team did when they were the #1 ranked team in the nation. This wasn’t just a win. It was a THRASHING of a team with ELITE level talent. I know we can get caught in Nick Fitzgerald or Aeris Williams, but the Bulldogs O-Line has been spectacular this season. Next week at Georgia is CRAZY!
#11 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Army 38-7. I’m not sure you can get up too much over this win. Sure JT Barrett looked great, but he’s always going to look great against inferior opponents. Ohio St. was going up against a bunch of 1-2 star guys and they ran wild which isn’t surprising. I like Army and like the Navy & Air Force they try to get after you with their running game with that triple option attack, but the Buckeyes are too fast for that to be very effective. We didn’t learn too much.
#12 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Samford 42-14. The win in South Bend looks good with the Irish rebounding against Boston College. Jake Fromm might have taken the starting QB position from Jake Eason & isn’t looking back. The true frosh QB went 8/13 for 165yds/3TD in a game where Nick Chubb flashed his old self running for 131yds/2TD on just 16 carries. No Sony Michel but UGA played a little smash mouth running it 54 times. Fromm is 2-0 as a starter with a 5:1 TD:INT ratio.
#13 Computer Hope Last Week Game No Game. The Seminoles had another week off before they resume playing next week when they host NC State. That’s an interesting game for the Seminoles as true freshman James Blackman gets the nod at QB & will be facing a pretty stout defensive line from the Wolfpack. NC State had a tough opening loss to South Carolina but have rebounded to win two straight so they’ll be ready to go while FSU might have a little rust from their layoff.
#14 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Mercer 24-10. Not overly dominant but Auburn went off script a bit by passing the ball so much. This almost felt like a game where War Eagle was working out some kinks on offense. Jarrett Stidham threw the ball 37 times which is never going to happen in big games, but he completed 32 of them (86.5%) although he didn’t find the endzone. Nine receivers caught the ball with 8 of them having multiple catches. They are still a solid playoff possibility.
#15 Computer Hope Last Week Beat East Carolina 64-17. Sometimes things make sense. Virginia Tech beat West Virginia. Both teams played East Carolina in back to back weeks. West Virginia beat the Pirates by 36. Virginia Tech beat them by 47. It works out! Virginia Tech is going to run you into the ground & D up against the run, but QB Josh Jackson can make some plays & I think this is what separates the Hokies. They get Clemson & play Miami-FL on the road but 10-2 is the floor.
#16 Computer Hope Last Week Beat SMU 56-36. Give up 7 points to Arkansas on the road, come back home and give up 36 points to SMU? TCU’s defense looked abysmal. No sacks. Just 3 tackles for loss. The Mustangs racked up almost 500 total yards of offense & only had the ball for 26 minutes! The Horned Frogs offense did show up. Kenny Hill threw for 4TD and the TCU rushing attack ran for 254yds/3TD! TCU plays at Oklahoma St. next week & if they just gave up 36 to SMU? Scary.
#17 Computer Hope Last Week Game No Game. Like Florida St., Miami-FL hasn’t played since Week 1 and they’ll finally get back on the field next week when they host a Toledo squad who has started out 3-0 & is playing pretty good football. Rockets QB Logan Woodside is a player so the Hurricanes will have to defend against him, but Toledo’s defense has looked pretty bad all season so I’m guessing the ultra athletic skill players in Miami won’t have any issues getting loose.
#18 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Mississippi St. 7-37. WOW! I thought Mississippi St. would win this game, but by 30 points!? LSU’s defense was absolutely shredded in this game. Aeris Williams ran for 146 yards on 23 carries. Nick Fitzgerald chipped in 88 & 2TD on 14 carries. Derrius Guice ran well for LSU but the Tigers didn’t have the ball much. I also think this was a good example of LSU not creating turnovers on defense. I’m not selling on LSU completely but this was a red flag.
#19 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Wyoming 49-13. The win over Nebraska last week doesn’t look nearly as good as it did when it happened now that the Cornhuskers dropped a home game to Northern Illinois! That being said, the Ducks still ran wild over an over-matched Wyoming squad and the defense made Josh Allen look terrible. Royce Freeman had over 2ooyds from scrimmage & Justin Herbert completed 62% for 251yds. The offense is averaging 56PPG which ranks #3!
#20 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Clemson 21-47. So you lose to Clemson? If the Tigers are ranked #3 then Louisville has an argument for being the #5 team in the nation after Clemson, Oklahoma, Alabama & Auburn. They still have the most electric QB in the country and the defense is super athletic. The Florida St. game will pose a problem because it’s in Tallahassee, but it’s going to be hard for the Redbirds not to finish 10-2 with a shot at an 11-2 season. They are THIS close however.
#21 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Tennessee 26-20. The 63-yard pass from Feleipe Franks to Tyrie Cleveland on the last play of the game to win it was total bananas. The Gators almost threw it away up 20-10 with 5 minutes left in the 4th only to see Tennessee pull off the miracle comeback to tie it up. I think this gives Florida quite a bit of confidence & watching them, you just can’t get away from how extraordinarily athletic this team is. The loss to Michigan stinks, but it was Michigan!
#22 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Oregon St. 52-23. Luke Falk went out of his mind against the Beavers throwing for 396 yards & 6TD on 37/49 (75.5%) passing. Oregon St. isn’t great but neither is Montana & the Cougars beat both of them. Throw in the 3-point win over Boise St. and Wazzou has started 3-0 against teams they should beat. This is a big deal. Washington St. hasn’t started a season 3-0 since 2005. Don’t sleep on the defense either. Not fantastic but very opportunistic.
#23 Computer Hope Last Week No Game. The Terrapins got the week off after great wins against Texas & Towson. The Texas win looks fantastic now that the Longhorns went into the Coliseum and took USC to double overtime. Texas probably wins that game if not for the strip fumble in 2OT that gave USC the ball only needing to score. If you rank USC as the #4 team in then nation, then Maryland makes a good case for being in the top-10. Should be 4-0 when they visit Columbus.
#24 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Boston College 49-20. The Irish rush offense went absolutely crazy against BC rushing for 515 yards on 51 carries with 7TD! RB Josh Adams led the way with 229yds on just 18 carries but QB Brandon Wimbush also chipped in 207yds on 21 carries! This has to give ND & especially Wimbush a lot of confidence, but last week against Georgia you saw ND struggle. To me this is where the Irish are. Good enough to win some games, but not against the elite.
#25 Computer Hope Last Week Beat South Carolina 23-13. I might have been higher on South Carolina more than anyone outside of Columbia, so if Kentucky can go into South Carolina and get a 23-13 win, I have to reward the Wildcats who ran their record to 3-0. I thought UK would be pretty good this year & may even challenge in the SEC East but troubles with E.Kentucky & Southern Miss early spelled disaster. Then they beat South Carolina & now what? Can they beat Florida next?

DROPPING OUT

#11 STANFORD CARDINAL: Losing to San Diego State? Really Stanford? What has Stanford really done this year to be honest? They blew out a terrible Rice team before losing back to back games against USC & San Diego State. USC had trouble with Western Michigan and Texas took them to OT. This same Texas team that gave up 51 to Maryland in Austin! USC blew out the Cardinal so where does that put Stanford? Behind Texas? Behind Western Michigan? Stanford’s defense could not get off the field! At this point Stanford is completely wasting an AMAZING season from RB Bryce Love who nobody can stop at this point. These first 3 games couldn’t have gone worse.

#16 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS: Losing at home to Kentucky!? Kentucky!!?!?!?!!? Carolina didn’t really have an answer for Kentucky’s running game. They couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down and the Kentucky rush defense was excellent. Deebo Samuel broke his leg late in the game and is now out for the year which is a CRUSHING blow to this offense moving forward. Carolina was a little sloppy as well with turnovers and penalties. This went from a year of infinite possibilities to one of distinct questions in the span of a Saturday afternoon. What a tough loss to take and now the season is in jeopardy.

#22 UCLA BRUINS: Riley Ferguson is a decent QB, but in his first game of the year against UL-Monroe, Ferguson was 10/25 for 97 yards and an interception with no TD passes. In his 2nd game of the year against UCLA, Ferguson goes 23/38 for 398 yards & 6TD to just one pick and outplays potential #1 overall draft pick Josh Rosen! The Bruins defense is giving up 38.3PPG and is complete garbage at this point. It sounds absolutely crazy given the talent level on this squad, but UCLA legitimately could go 4-8/3-9. Next year is going to be wild because Rosen will enter the NFL Draft and I think Jim Mora is looking for a job. Crazy times.

#24 KANSAS ST. WILDCATS: You can’t be taken seriously if you travel to Vanderbilt and lose 14-7. K-State ran the ball for over 200 yards and still lost this football game. The Wildcats had more total yards, more first time, greater time of possession and more rushing yards. And lost. Terrible. Assuming they can’t win road games, KSU has at least 3 more losses and play Oklahoma at home meaning another L which limits them to an at best 7-5 record with home games against West Virginia & Texas Tech potentially preventing them from a bowl game. Goodness! A loss to Vanderbilt!?

NCAA POWER 25 – 2017 WEEK 2

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Fresno St. 41-10. I think the most surprising aspect of this game is that Fresno St. scored 10 points against Alabama’s defense after the Tide only surrendered 7 points last week to Florida State. Another surprise of this game is Alabama only getting 1 sack and 3 tackles for loss against a severely outmatched Bulldogs squad. It almost seems like the Tide were going in slow motion. QB Jalen Hurts threw for 128yds and also ran for 154yds and had 3 total TDs.
#2 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Ohio St. 31-16. QB Baker Mayfield put on a CLINIC in Columbus taking down the #2 team in the nation. Mayfield passed for 386yds/3TD without a single mistake & completed 77% of his passes! He’s the Heisman leader at this point. The bigger picture is Oklahoma’s O-Line completely shutting down the Buckeyes pass rush! Good grief that was an impressive performance. If you can’t get to Mayfield, you can’t stop this offense & you can’t stop OU!
#3 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Auburn 14-6. Forget that Clemson only scored 14 points. Auburn is a helluva football team. Focus instead on Clemson recording a RIDICULOUS 11 sacks and 14 tackles for loss. And that was a solid Auburn O-Line. Before the season Phil Steele rated Auburn’s O-Line as the 8th best unit in the nation. That speaks to the strength of this Clemson defense. That D-Line is INSANE & after Saturday, a Clemson/Oklahoma title game seems very tantalizing!
#4 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Stanford 42-24. After the Western Michigan game I wasn’t sure about USC, but the tape of the WMU game showed Sam Darnold as sharp as he was last season. That showed up against Stanford as Darnold threw for 316yds/4TD while completing 81% of his passes! USC found a compliment to Ronald Jones in true frosh Stephen Carr who like Jones ran for 100yds. Deontay Burnett can’t be stopped & the Trojans O-Line was outstanding. Incredible win!
#5 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Pittsburgh 33-14. I thought coming into the season that if Penn St. had somewhat of a weakness it might be the edge rushing unit but Shareef Miller flashed a bit against Pittsburgh LT Brian O’Neill who is considered one of the best LTs in the nation. Penn St. now has 8 sacks on the year & they’ve given up just one. You can’t read too much into that because all they’ve played is PITT and Akron, but if the pass rush keeps up this pace, then there’s no weakness.
#6 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Cincinnati 36-14. This game was quite a bit closer than the final score indicates. Michigan was up only 14-7 after the first quarter and after 3 quarters the Wolverines led 24-14. Hayden Moore & Mike Boone would come up with a big play here and then while Michigan never really broke the game open. Michigan’s defense is swarming & the duo of Rashan Gary & Maurice Hurst is incredible, but QB Wilton Speight is going to have to play quite a bit better.
#7 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Chattanooga 45-10. So far, LSU is playing EXACTLY like they need to. QB Danny Etling had another solid game & so far he’s completing 71% of his passes with 1TD. He’s throwing 15-16 passes per game. RB Derrius Guice is on pace to rush for 1,456yds/26TD. LSU is running the football 52 times per game. At some point Etling will have to make plays, but if LSU can get a 7-0 or 14-3 lead, this team is ready made to salt games away. Stay the course!
#8 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Oklahoma 16-31. Not sure what to make of the Buckeyes getting slaughtered in Columbus! I didn’t think the Sooners could win this game and only did they win, they won by 2TDs on the road! I think the take away from this one is that Ohio St. is limited at their QB position and at receiver. JT Barrett is limited & I don’t think Paris Campbell can be a #1 WR against elite teams. At least not this season. The D-Line also only had 2 sacks. Very curious.
#9 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Montana 63-7. The Huskies looked a lot sharper this week against the Grizzlies than they did last week against Rutgers. I thought UW’s defense played extremely well in getting pressure on the Montana offense and collapsing the pocket. I think Washington’s offense is still finding it’s way. Losing WR John Ross seems to be having an effect as Washington doesn’t seem to have that dangerous weapon that can take the top off a defense. They need that guy.
#10 Computer Hope Last Week Beat S. Alabama 44-7. The Cowboys didn’t meet much resistance from South Alabama & to be honest I thought Oklahoma St. used the game to get some guys game experience. He’s not getting tons of media attention but QB Mason Rudolph at this point is on pace to throw for 4,147 yards & 39TD with 0 picks while completing 73% of his passes. With Oklahoma beating Ohio State, if Oklahoma St. runs the table, Rudolph is going to make a big case for the Heisman.
#11 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to USC 24-42. Wow! Talk about a shock! Stanford’s defense was downright awful against the Trojans offense allowing USC to go 10 of 12 on 3rd down which gave the Trojans a 10 minute advantage on time of possession. QB Keller Chryst was decent. RB Bryce Love was exceptional running for 160yds on just 17 carries, but the Cardinal couldn’t stop USC & couldn’t get them off the field. Stanford was even +2 in TO margin. Stanford needs to tighten up that defense.
#12 Computer Hope Last Week Game against Louisiana Monroe cancelled. FSU cancelled their game against UL-Monroe due to the impending disaster known as Hurricane Irma. The Seminoles were 34.5 point favorites in this one so I doubt it would have been much of a game, but it would have give new QB and true freshman James Blackman some game experience. FSU doesn’t play again until 9/23.
#13 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Florida Atlantic 31-14. This is a helluva football team. I thought Wisconsin would suffer a bit after the players they lost due to graduation/NFL. So far they haven’t. True freshman Jonathan Taylor is on pace to rush for close to 1900 yards & he wasn’t even slated to start coming into the season. QB Alex Hornibrook has been solid & TE Troy Fumagalli looks like an All-American. The Badgers should be 10-0 when they lost Michigan on November 18th.
#14 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Notre Dame 20-19. Fast. That is one word I kept coming back to when watching Georgia play Notre Dame Saturday night. The game wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate if you watched the game. The Bulldogs completely shut down the Irish running game, and their edge rushers consistently beat the vaunted Irish O-Line. Georgia was extremely sloppy with turnovers & penalties. If they clean that up they might of won this game by 15-20 points.
#15 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Arkansas 28-7. This was a fantastic win for TCU made especially so because it was a true road game in Fayetteville, and also a game Arkansas desperately needed to win. The Horned Frogs defense made life miserable for Arkansas QB Austin Allen for the entire game & they also did a good job stopping the Razorbacks running game. TCU ran the ball well giving Arkansas a taste of their own medicine. QB Kenny Hill has to play better though. He was a bit rough.
#16 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Missouri 31-13. Quit sleeping on the Gamecocks!!! Amazingly enough Missouri opened as 4-point favorites in this game. The line closed to Mizzou by 2.5, but SC covered that with ease with a convincing 18 point victory on the road! It was ludicrous to think Missouri could win just because they put up 70 points on Missouri State, but South Carolina is for real. I think their first two wins over NC State & Missouri are solid. QB Jake Bentley is the real deal.
#17 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Delaware 27-0. Sort of a ho-hum game for the Hokies after a thrilling win over West Virginia the week before. Tossing a shutout is always a nice thing and edge rusher Tremaine Edwards was an absolute monster in this game, but I would have liked to have seen the offense get a little looser than it did against the Hens. Games like this happen. You are playing lesser competition and it’s hard for the kids to get up for it. They get East Carolina next week.
#18 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Clemson 6-14. I’m not sure you can read too much into this loss. Clemson might actually be the best team in the nation and Auburn lost to them on the road by 8 points. That’s hardly cause for concern. If anything, Auburn has to realize that they need QB Jarrett Stidham to make some plays when opponents take away the run. They have plenty of time to work that out before hosting Alabama on November 25th. The next test will be traveling to LSU.
#19 Computer Hope Last Week Game against Arkansas St. Cancelled. Like Florida St., the Hurricanes cancelled their game this week although Miami-FL was slated to play in Arkansas instead of hosting the Red Wolves. Miami doesn’t play against until 9/23 but a possible 11-0 season is on the table as Florida St. now looks vulnerable without Deondre Francois as their starting QB.
#20 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Nebraska 42-35. Oregon couldn’t get anything going in the 2nd half against Nebraska, but the Ducks outscored the Huskers 42-14 in the 1st half so you could see how they might be thinking about salting the game away & holding on for dear life. What stood out to me was how explosive Oregon is on offense & that the O-line did a good job keeping QB Justin Herbert upright. There is a lot of experience on this team & I think they can win a lot of games.
#21 Computer Hope Last Week Beat North Carolina 47-35. Two things are certain from Louisville’s first couple of games. The first is that this team can’t play a lick of defense. Purdue put 28 on them followed up by the Tar Heels scoring 35. Those teams aren’t prolific offensively. That’s going to be a problem. The other certainty is that Lamar  Jackson is unstoppable. He’s on pace right now to throw for over 5,000 yards, run for over 1500 yards & have 52 combined touchdowns. Good grief!
#22 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Hawaii 56-23. Josh Rosen picked up right where he left off completing 22 of 25 passes for 329 yards & 5TD! So far on the season Rosen is 57/84 (68%) for 820 yards & 9TD without an interception. That’s insane. He’s on pace for almost 60TD! UCLA did a better job running the football although the Rainbows defense isn’t exactly Texas A&M. The Bruins have to work out some kinks on defense but they get another week before having to go to Stanford.
#23 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Louisiana Tech 57-21. The battle of the Bulldogs wasn’t much of a battle. Mississippi St. led 36-14 at halftime & 57-14 after the 3rd quarter before LA Tech scored a garbage TD in the 3rd quarter. Both Nick Fitzgerald and Aeris Williams ran for over 100 yards in a dominant performance. Hail State has a telling 3-game slate beginning next week as they play LSU, Georgia & Auburn in secession. They could easily lose all 3 games & still be a top-20 team.
#24 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Charlotte 55-7. I was a little late to the Kansas St. bandwagon but so far they’ve been dominant. They haven’t played anyone but so far they’re scoring 55 points per game and there is something to be said for dominating the teams you are supposed to. Go ask Baylor about being 0-2! QB Jesse Ertz is playing well and the receivers are making big plays. They are playing flawless football at this point. They haven’t committed a turnover & average just 5 penalties/G!
#25 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Towson 63-17. QB Tyrrell Pigrome missed this game with an injury but the Terps still rolled to a 63-17 win over Towson. This was nothing special to be honest. Maryland should beat Towson by 50 points, but like I said, there is something to be said for dominating teams you are supposed to. Ty Johnson GOT LOOSE again running for 124 yards on just 5 carries. Johnson is on pace for 1,664 rushing yards averaging 15.1ypc! That’s absolutely bananas!

DROPPING OUT

#19 NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH: Notre Dame is in a very tough spot. If you watched the game against Georgia then it was certainly obvious that Notre Dame wasn’t nearly as athletic or fast as Georgia was. It wasn’t as bad as when the Irish played Alabama in the 2012 National Championship game, but it was obvious just the same. When looked through this prism, the Irish are going to have an extremely difficult time with North Carolina, USC, NC State, Wake Forest, Miami-FL, & Stanford. Even a game against Navy won’t be easy and all of a sudden the Irish could be 5-7 or even 4-8 this season. As a Notre Dame fan, I’m going to say what we all don’t want to hear. Notre Dame has already peaked under Brian Kelly and I think Kelly might be out after this season. It might be an overreaction to a depressing loss in a game the Irish should have won, but I don’t see a way out for Notre Dame. I think big change is coming.

NCAA POWER 25 – 2017 WEEK 1

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Florida St. 24-7. It’s amazing to consider all the ways that Alabama can beat you and then watch them beat the Seminoles by 17 through special teams. That isn’t to say the defense wasn’t dominant. Alabama totaled 3 sacks, 9 tackles for loss & 2 picks in destroying an exceptionally talented Seminoles squad. Maybe Alabama gets beat this year, but after watching Week 1, Alabama is head & shoulders above every other team in college football at this point.
#2 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Indiana 49-21. Ohio St. trailed at the half 14-13 before blowing the barn doors off the Hoosiers, outscoring Indiana 36-7 in the 2nd half. Watching this game you almost felt as if Ohio St. was feeling their way through the first half before exploding. JK Dobbins was exceptional and the Buckeyes defense came up with 9 tackles for loss, 5 sacks & 2 picks. Tyquan Lewis had 2 sacks. QB J.T. Barrett looked OK at times but I think he still needs to play better.
#3 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Kent St. 56-3. It’s Kent St. so you can’t really get too jacked up on this one if your Clemson but with Deondre Francois going down with an injury for Florida State, didn’t the path to the playoffs just get incredibly easier for the Tigers? Kent St. was down 21-0 after the first quarter, but the Flashes only attempted 5 passes the entire game. If you are wondering why Clemson’s pass rushing numbers aren’t better, it’s because Kent St. never tried to throw the football!
#4 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Rice 62-7. Yes it’s Rice but good grief the Cardinal looked dominant in their opener against the Owls. RB Bryce Love put fears to rest over losing Christian McCaffery by taking the first snap of the game & turning into a 62-yard scamper! Love finished with 180 rushing yards on 13 carries! True frosh TE Colby Parkinson caught 2 TDs! Keep an eye on him all season. The defense could have potentially made a few more plays, but that is nit picking to a high level.
#5 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Akron 52-0. Like with Clemson you can’t get too excited over Penn St. hammering a team like Akron but good grief Saquon Barkley looked amazing going for 226 yards from scrimmage with 172 rushing yards on 14 carries along with 2TD! DT Tyrell Chavis had an incredible day with 3 tackles for loss. As a defense the Nittany Lions racked up 14 tackles for loss & 5 sacks with an interception. If the defense keeps this up then Penn St. defends their Big 10 title.
#6 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Florida 33-17. You make a good argument that this was the most impressive win of Week 1. Michigan is incredibly young. Wilton Speight didn’t play well. Chris Evans didn’t run well. Michigan still DOMINATED Florida like they were playing a decent MAC squad. The defense was downright scary. The Wolverines had 6 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, & forced 5 fumbles recovering 3. They held the Gators to 11 rushing yards on 27 carries and 192 total yards. Great game!
#7 Computer Hope Last Week Beat BYU 27-0. Do you get the feeling that nobody is really paying attention to LSU and that the Tigers sort of like it? BYU is a pretty good football team and LSU dominated them in total. The LSU defense held BYU to -5 yards rushing & 97 total yards. Derrius Guice rushed for over 100 yards while Darrel Williams looked great in relief with almost 100 of his own. An even scarier thought? Arden Key didn’t even play this week so the defense can get even better!
#8 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Tulsa 59-24. Oklahoma St.’s triplets were on FIRE against Tulsa in the Cowboys opening win. Mason Rudolph was 20/24 for 303yds/3TD. Justice Hill ran for 132yds/1TD on 15 carries. James Washington caught 6 balls for 145yds/2TD. OK State’s defense was a little raggedy giving up over 400 total yards to Tulsa and over 200 rushing yards. Mike Gundy & his staff will need to tighten things up, but it’s going to take 40+ points to beat Oklahoma St. anyway.
#9 Computer Hope Last Week Beat UTEP 56-7. QB Baker Mayfield was on fire going 19/20 for 329 yards & 3TD before giving way to the backups in Oklahoma’s blow out opening win. TE Mark Andrews looked like the 1st Team All-American he should be and while Oklahoma wasn’t as explosive at tailback the way they were last year with Joe Mixon & Samaje Perine, the Sooners still rushed for 180 yards. The defense could have been more explosive especially against a team like UTEP. Nit picking.
#10 Computer Hope Last Week Beat W.Michigan 49-31. I didn’t expect USC to come out looking THAT rusty even with how many new players they were breaking in. It isn’t like PJ Fleck left the cupboards bare at WMU, but USC giving up 31 at home to a MAC squad and not covering the spread? That was surprising. The Trojans managed just one sack and 4 tackles for loss which is way too low. Sam Darnold looked bad leaving only Ronald Jones and Deontay Burnett as the lone bright spots.
#11 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Rutgers 30-14. Like USC, it took Washington a little while to get going. After going own 7-0 to start, the Huskies outscored Rutgers 27-0 before the Scarlet Knights got an early 4th quarter TD to make it 27-14. Lavon Coleman struggled in this game & the Washington defense didn’t seem nearly as incredible as I thought they might be. Myles Gaskin had a great game & Jake Browning did too for the most part which makes the final score all the more odd.
#12 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Alabama 7-24. Last year Florida St. lose Derwin James. This year they lose Deondre Francois. Talk about bad luck! The game really came down to FSU’s inability to take the physical pounding from Alabama that we all thought the Tide would revert to. Alabama only passed the ball 18 times, but ran it on 42 occasions. The Seminoles also had a difficult time with Alabama’s Front-7. That isn’t surprising. Florida St. can overcome this, but it’ll be tough.
#13 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Utah St. 59-10. So maybe I should have had Wisconsin in my preseason top-25! We all make mistakes don’t we!? The Badgers offense looked incredible. Alex Hornibrook was outstanding going 15/23 for 244yds/3TD. I thought Wisconsin would struggle at tailback after losing Corey Clement but Jonathan Taylor & Bradrick Shaw combined to rush for 171yds/2TD on 27 carries. The defense didn’t flash that much but the overall effort was great.
#14 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Appalchian St. 31-10. That is a big win right there. Appalachian St. is a solid football team & Georgia came out and dominated them start to finish. Quite a bit will be made of the Bulldogs losing QB Jake Eason early but true frosh Jake Fromm went 10/15 in relief for 143yds/1TD. Sony Michel & Nick Chubb combined to rush for 183yds/2TD on 31 carries. I was a little disappointed to see that Davin Bellamy or Lorenzo Carter didn’t get any sacks.
#15 Computer Hope Last Week Beat West Virginia 31-24. I thought Virginia Tech would struggle a bit in trying to replace QB Jerrod Evans, but freshman QB Josh Jackson did a pretty good imitation throwing for 235yds/1TD while also rushing for 101yds/1TD! The Hokies had a brutal time stopping West Virginia’s offense with the Mountaineers racking up over 500 total yards, but Virginia Tech did a good job of bending & never breaking especially on the final drive of the game.
#16 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Jackson St. 65-0. Ignore TCU at your own peril. Sure it was Jackson St., but 65-0!? Kenny Hill was on fire throwing for 4TDs while the Horned Frogs rushing attack totaled over 240 yards rushing. The defense amassed 5 sacks and an astounding 15 tackles for loss. Jackson St. had only 65 total yards & TCU turned them over twice. With Texas losing, TCU is the 3rd best team in the Big XII. It’s too bad they have road games against both Oklahoma teams.
#17 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Georgia Southern 41-7. I think what we all wanted to see from Auburn in their opener, we saw. The running game was devastating with Kerryon Johnson & Kam Martin combining for 272 rushing yards & 2TD on 30 carries. QB Jarrett Stidham was 14/24 for 185yds/2TD. He did throw a pick, but Stidham showed us that opponents will have to respect the passing game which only opens up the running game even more. Getting to 10 wins is a possibility.
#18 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Bethune-Cookman 41-13. We all wanted to see how new QB Malik Rosier would play now that Brad Kaaya went to the NFL. Rosier didn’t disappoint going 17/28 for 217yds/3TD without throwing a pick. Mark Walton was outstanding rushing for 148yds/2TD on 16 carries but backup Travis Homer didn’t fall off AT ALL rushing for 108yds on 11 carries! WR Ahmmon Richards didn’t play & Miami-FL could have been better on defense, but Rosier showed out.
#19 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Temple 49-16. I said before the year that if QB Brandon Wimbush plays well the Irish should average 40PPG. Wimbush was outstanding against Temple & the Irish scored 49. The Irish had 3 different players rush for over 100 yards en route to racking up 422yds/5TD on the ground. Temple also had no answer for Equanimeous St. Brown on the edge. The Irish need to get a lot better at covering receivers & they need a 2nd receiver for St. Brown, but impressive!
#20 Computer Hope Last Week Beat NC State 35-28. NC State has one of the best D-Lines in college football and Dave Doeren always has his defense hitting hard. You can’t help but be super impressed that the Gamecocks were able to hang 35 on the Wolfpack. It might be one of the most impressive showing from Week 1. For the most part, NC State outplayed SC, but the Wolfpack had no answer for Gamecocks WR Deebo Samuel & SC converted NC State turnovers into 14 points.
#21 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Southern Utah 77-21. Yes it’s only Southern Utah, but everything was clicking for the Ducks on offense and the defense looked great too. Given how the other Pac 12 teams played (excepting Stanford), the Ducks stand out as possibly one of the better team in the conference. Justin Herbert and Royce Freeman look dialed in and I think the Oregon O-Line played very well which is a great sign. Beat Nebraska this week and the Ducks will put people on notice.
#22 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Purdue 35-28. Lamar Jackson got off to his Heisman defense with an incredible statistical game as he passed for 378yds/2TD and added another 107 rushing yards. The final score doesn’t look great especially when you consider how bad Purdue has been in recent seasons, but I actually thought the Boilermakers might have a puncher’s chance in this one & they showed up. Credit Louisville’s defense for being very opportunistic. This might be too low.
#23 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Charleston Southern 49-0. The Bulldogs were smothering on defense allowing Charleston just 33 total yards for the entire game. The Bulldogs weren’t ball hawking too much though. They didn’t create a single turnover and only sacked the CSU QB one time. QB Nick Fitzgerald had a solid game and I was excited to see RB Aeris Williams run the ball well as it’ll take pressure off Fitzgerald. As good as a 49-0 win looks, this Mississippi St. team can get better.
#24 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Texas A&M 45-44. I almost flirted with the idea of putting Josh Rosen himself at #1 over Alabama! Did any QB make a better case for the Heisman than Rosen did on Sunday night? The Bruins QB completed 35/59 passes for 491yds/4TD without throwing a pick. He was hammered most of the game due to a porous O-Line and still managed to led UCLA back from a 44-10 deficit late in the 3rd quarter to a 45-44 stunning victory. What a way to start the season!
#25 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Texas 51-41. A 10-point win over Texas in Austin with Tom Herman making his coaching debut for the Longhorns? Darn right the Terps belong in the Power-25! Yes Maryland gave up 41 points but the Terps put on a clinic. Texas had absolutely no answer for RB Ty Johnson or QB Tyrrell Pigrome or WR DJ Moore. Pigrome got off to a bad start in this game but showed tremendous heart in leading Maryland to a victory. You can’t underestimate this guy.

DROPPING OUT

#18 NC STATE WOLFPACK: Losing to South Carolina isn’t awful, but giving up 35 points when the defense is as good as it is? I’m not sure whether South Carolina is legitimately the best team in the SEC East or if NC State isn’t nearly as good as I thought, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see NC State back in the Power 25 at some point in time. The team is entirely too good and if you look a that boxscore, it is easy to see that NC State dominated the game statistically. Can’t give up huge plays and points off turnovers. That is what cost NC State the game.

#19 TEXAS LONGHORNS: Giving up 51 points to Maryland at home in the season opener? That’s ridiculous but maybe even more of a concern is that Texas’ O’Line didn’t play all that well. Maybe Maryland has a lot better edge rushers than I’m giving them credit for, but if Maryland is teeing off on the Texas QBs then what are teams like TCU & Oklahoma going to do? I really like Tom Herman in Austin so I hope this works out, but the results after Week 1 have to be a bit alarming especially given how the Longhorns were beat.

#21 FLORIDA GATORS: Like NC State I wouldn’t be surprised to see Florida get back into the Power 25 and climb really high. I do think their QB situation is a bit alarming and Michigan completely ran them over which isn’t a good luck for a storied program like Florida has especially considering how young and inexperienced Michigan is as a football team. Florida to me looks like a squad that might have an identity crisis. Coach McElwain is exceptional but winning at Colorado State is a little different than building & sustaining a program like Florida.

#25 SOUTH FLORIDA BULLS: The Bulls are actually already 2-0 but they’ve beaten San Jose St. and Stony Brook and haven’t really dominated either of them which knocks them out of my Power-25. The Bulls have a pretty good football and I think they can get to 12-0 without much difficulty for the most part, but it’s a flawed team to be sure and eventually it’ll catch up to them. Too many teams at this point seem to be better than South Florida.

NCAA POWER 25 – 2017 PRESEASON

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Last Season: 14-1, National Runner Up. It’s almost impossible to bet against Alabama. They return just 11 starters but QB Jalen Hurts returns and the depth is so absurd that it almost doesn’t matter who they throw out there. There is talk that DT Da’Ron Payne is better than any DT HC Nick Saban has had in Tuscaloosa. Minkah Fitzpatrick is moving to safety to join Ronnie Harrison for a secondary that is straight FILTHY! They can ground & pound opponents to death.
#2 Computer Hope Last Season: 11-2, Lost Playoff Semifinal. The Buckeyes bring back 15 starters from a team that went to the playoffs but got exposed by a tremendous Clemson team 31-0 in the Fiesta Bowl. Ohio St. is the closest team we have to Alabama as far as overall talent is concerned. What separates Ohio St. for me this year is their ability to get pressure off the edge. The team has a couple of questions but Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, Nick Bosa & Jalyn Holmes are a nightmare for QBs.
#3 Computer Hope Last Season: 14-1, National Champions. I think Clemson isn’t being favored to repeat because Deshaun Watson is now playing on Sundays but Clemson’s defense is otherworldly and I think Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence & Christian Wilkins give the Tigers the best DL in college football. Throw in Kendall Joseph, Van Smith & Trayvon Mullen, and I’m not sure how you score on defense. The O-Line is incredible & I think QB Kelly Bryant will make enough plays to win.
#4 Computer Hope Last Season: 10-3, Won Orange Bowl. The Seminoles should be considered national title contenders. They return 9 starters on defense that should be nasty. I love Clemson’s defense but FSU probably has better edge rushers with Brian Burns & Josh Sweat and it’s not like DTs Derrick Nnadi & Demarcus Christmas aren’t beasts! Even scarier is FSU gets a full season of S Derwin James who in my opinion is the best player in college football. They could celebrate like it’s 2013!
#5 Computer Hope Last Season: 10-3, Won Rose Bowl. No team in college football is on a bigger winning streak than the Trojans who after starting 1-3 in 2016, reeled off 9 straight wins including a dramatic 52-49 win over Penn St. in the Rose Bowl. Anytime you have the best QB in college football you should be considered a threat. Sam Darnold  completed 67% of his passes last season for over 3,000 yards & 31TD to just 9INT! The Trojans also return 7 on defense & have a shot at 12-0!
#6 Computer Hope Last Season: 11-3, Lost Rose Bowl. Penn St. returns 15 starters including 9 on offense including QB Trace McSorey, RB Saquon Barkley & TE Mike Gesicki. The Nittany Lions scored 37.6PPG last season & they’ll top that mark this year. I think defense is going to be key for PSU and specifically their ability to get pressure on the opposing QB. DEs Garrett Sickels and Evan Schwan have graduated meaning they’ll need some guys to fill those voids. There is nothing not to like!
#7 Computer Hope Last Season: 10-3, Won Sun Bowl. After a 3-2 start that saw Stanford drop 2 divisional games to Washington & Wazzou, Stanford 7-1 to end the season & rank 12th in the nation. I think the #12 was too low and the Cardinal return 16 starters (8 on both sides) including QB Keller Chryst who started the last 6 games, all Stanford wins. Losing guys like Solomon Thomas & Christian McCaffery is tough but I think the 2017 Stanford team is better than the Stanford of 2016.
#8 Computer Hope Last Season: 12-2, Lost Playoff Semifinal. Seems ludicrous to list Washington at #8 in the nation, but they have to play at Stanford which pushes them below the Cardinal. If the Huskies finish 12-0 I wouldn’t be surprised in the least. QB Jake Browning is a Heisman candidate & UW has incredible talent returning in Myles Gaskin, Dante Pettis & Trey Adams. Defensively replacing Kevin King & Budda Baker will be tough but Azeem Victor and Co. should be stone filthy!
#9 Computer Hope Last Season: 10-3, Won Alamo Bowl. If not this year when? Oklahoma St. flirted with the possibility of a national championship back in 2011 but a loss to Iowa State crushed that dream. This season, Oklahoma State has a schedule that could give them a 12-0 season that could lead to a playoff berth. They get Oklahoma at home & the Sooners are now entering the post-Bob Stoops era & there is opportunity there. They’ll score a ton of points but they’ll need to play D!
#10 Computer Hope Last Season: 11-2, Won Sugar Bowl. Oklahoma should be a massive playoff contender but I think a couple of things work against them. The first is that they play road games against both Ohio St. & Oklahoma State. That could be 2 losses which would be difficult to make up. I think the 2nd thing is that losing Joe Mixon, Samaje Perine & DeDe Westbrook are going to be hard to overcome. I also think there will be transition now that Bob Stoops has resigned. It’ll be tough for OU.
#11 Computer Hope Last Season: 8-4, Won Citrus Bowl. After starting the year 2-2 with losses to Wisconsin & Auburn, LSU fired Les Miles and Ed Orgeron took over on an interim basis leading LSU to a 6-2 record including a 29-9 win over Louisville in the Citrus Bowl. Of course, LSU lost to Florida & Alabama, but LSU rewarded Orgeron with the head coaching position. LSU will always field an incredible defense & Derius Guice is the best RB in the nation. Let’s see how strategic Orgeron is.
#12 Computer Hope Last Season: 10-3, Lost Orange Bowl. Michigan has to be the youngest team in college football this season given that the Wolverines return a total of 5 starters from last year’s squad including just one defensive starter in Mike McCray. On the other hand I’m loathe to place Michigan any lower because the talent Jim Harbaugh has assembled in Ann Arbor is downright scary. The key for Michigan is to get the young players comfortable & working together. If so they’ll win big!
#13 Computer Hope Last Season: 9-4, Won Russell Athletic Bowl. The U isn’t quite back to its recent glory years of 2000-2003 including their 2001 National Championship, but give Mark Richt a couple more years and the Hurricanes are going to be a force on the national scene. They are still a bit young and will break in a new QB this year with Brad Kaaya playing in the NFL, but they draw Virginia Tech & home & only have a couple of other tricky games. Getting to 10-11 wins is in play.
#14 Computer Hope Last Season 8-5, Lost Sugar Bowl. The key for Auburn this year will be the play of QB Jarrett Stidham. Stidham might be the best QB Auburn has had since Cam Newton was screaming War Eagle and the Tigers have plenty on hand to run HC Gus Malzahn’s offense to perfection. Stidham is a better QB than Nick Marshall who got Auburn to the national title game in 2013. Kamryn Pettway is a better runner than Tre Mason. The D will be salty & they get Alabama at home!
#15 Computer Hope Last Season 10-4, Won Belk Bowl. If QB Jerod Evans was returning to Blacksburg, not only would the Hokies be the favorites to win the Coastal but I think they’d have a good shot at giving Clemson or Florida St. all they could handle in the ACC championship game. I’m excited to see this defense in action. Virginia Tech returns 6 of their back-7 and DC Bud Foster is going to get the most out of those players. If the QB situation gets solved, I think the Hokies could flirt with 11-1.
#16 Computer Hope Last Season 6-7, Lost Liberty Bowl. After finishing with a two year record of 23-3 from 2014-2015, TCU had a transition year last season finishing 6-7. There won’t be a repeat performance as the Frogs return 17 starters including 10 on offense & have a schedule that should allow them to potentially win 10 games assuming they lose road dates against Oklahoma St. & Oklahoma. The last time TCU had close to this many returning starters was 2010. TCU finished 13-0!
#17 Computer Hope Last Season 8-5, Won Liberty Bowl. Potentially one of the most interesting teams in the nation that could throw a real wrench into the narrative should they get excellent QB play from either Jacob Eason or Jake Fromm. If RB Nick Chubb is back to 100% health then Georgia is going to be nasty on offense because they’ll be able to spread their receivers out. Defensively, UGA returns 10 starters from a squad that allowed 24PPG. They can legitimately finish with 12 wins.
#18 Computer Hope Last Season 7-6, Won Independence Bowl. Another potential surprise team, the Wolfpack are a dangerous team because their D-Line is going to be incredibly dominant & winning in the trenches typically means winning a lot of football games. QB Ryan Finley had a solid season as a first time starter & I think he’ll get better. It’s wild to think that HC Dave Doeren might be on a hot seat because I think NC State is on the verge of becoming a major factor in the ACC.
#19 Computer Hope Last Season 5-7. Texas got their man when they lured Houston HC Tom Herman away from the Cougars and brought him to Austin. Charlie Strong couldn’t quite get things working with the Longhorns but he hardly leaves the cupboards bare for Herman who inherits one of the most talented teams in the nation. Texas returns 17 starters including 10 on defense & should be A LOT better especially considering QB Shane Buechele was a true frosh last season. They’ll win big.
#20 Computer Hope Last Season 9-4, Lost Citrus Bowl. It sounds wild to think Louisville is barely hanging on for a spot in the top-20 considering they started the 2016 season off 9-1 and have the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in QB Lamar Jackson, but the Cardinals dropped their last 3 games in embarrassing fashion & it seems as if the 2017 version might not be as goo as the 2016 team. I’ll never count out Bobby Petrino in the college game & Louisville has a lot of talented pieces.
#21 Computer Hope Last Season 9-4, Won Outback Bowl. I think Jim McElwain is one of the best coaches in college football, but something seems off about the Gators this year. Their QB situation is still somewhat muddled and they’ve already suspended WR Antonio Callaway for the season opener against  Michigan. There is no question the Gators are talented enough to win the SEC East for a 3rd straight season but so far things are getting off to a great start down in Gainesville.
#22 Computer Hope Last Season 4-8. Brian Kelly might be coaching for his life this year in South Bend, but I think the Irish season might hinge on the play of QB Brandon Wimbush. If the rSO can live up to his recruiting hype, then Notre Dame has so much talent & firepower on offense, they’ll find it difficult not to score 40PPG! That will put pressure on the D which returns 7 starters for new DC Mike Elko. If Elko can get the most out of his defense, Notre Dame will have a shot at the playoffs.
#23 Computer Hope Last Season 6-7, Lost Birmingham Bowl. You won’t find the Gamecocks on anyone’s preseason Top-25, but South Carolina is going to make significant noise this year on the back of QB Jake Bentley. As a true freshman last year, Bentley completed 66% of his passes with 9TD to 4INT. He’s big at 6’4/230lbs & is going to get better. SC returns 10 starters on offense & should see a huge jump in production. Getting LB Skai Moore back this year will even make the defense better.
#24 Computer Hope Last Season 6-7, Won St. Petersburg Bowl. Like South Carolina, Mississippi St. has a QB in Nick Fitzgerald who I think the Bulldogs will ride hard to a lot of wins in 2017. The schedule is absolutely nasty but HC Dan Mullen always gets his teams to overachieve. It will be difficult to navigate a 3-game stretch that sees MSU host LSU followed by 2 road games against Georgia & Auburn. Win those three & will be seeing shades of 2014 when the Bulldogs were ranked #1!!
#25 Computer Hope Last Season 11-2, Won Birmingham Bowl. South Florida is the team you are going to hear a lot about when it comes to non-Power 5 conferences either crashing the playoff party or getting into the New Year’s 6 bowls. The Bulls have to deal with losing their HC Willie Taggart to Oregon but Charlie Strong knows a little thing about winning & he takes over. The schedule is made for USF to finish 13-0 & QB Quinton Flowers deserves to have some spotlight on him.

NCAA FOOTBALL POWER 25 – 2016 FINAL RANKINGS

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Deshaun Watson might not have won the Heisman but he proved he was the best player in college football by taking down the Tide 35-31 in dramatic fashion and handing Clemson their first national title since 1981! The Tigers did the ultimate by beating both Urban Meyer and Nick Saban in the playoffs which makes the championship all the sweeter. Watson was huge. The defensive effort was fantastic. And Dabo was well…Dabo! Swinney is now 70-13 the past six seasons. He’s proven ELITE.
#2 Computer Hope What if Bo Scarbrough doesn’t get hurt in the 3rd quarter? The Tide were up 17-7 when Scarbrough went down & then were outscored 28-14. Why didn’t Alabama hold on the last play of the game forcing Clemson to kick a FG to send the game into OT? Lots of question surrounding this loss for the Tide, but you can’t deny that Jalen Hurts was terrible, the offense couldn’t convert on 3rd down and the defense couldn’t find a way to get off the field against Watson’s passing attack. The best team won.
#3 Computer Hope If you don’t believe full games out of Jake Butt and Jabril Peppers is worth at last 2 points for the Wolverines then I have no idea what to tell you. If you watched them all season, it was easy to see that Michigan was right behind Alabama & Clemson. They were possibly with them assuming full health. The Wolverines dominated the Buckeyes in Columbus yet lost. They dealt with injuries against Florida St. & lost by one point. This ranking is based on “What if?”, but I think Michigan deserves it.
#4 Computer Hope What an unbelievable way to win the Rose Bowl!? The Trojans go up 20-7 on Penn St. only to see the Nittany Lions roar back to take a 49-35 lead into the 4th quarter by outscoring USC 28-8 in the 3rd quarter. Not to be outdone, the Trojans outscore PSU 17-0 in the 4th capped off by a last second FG that gave USC a 52-49 win! USC won 9 straight to end the season including wins over Penn St., Colorado, Washington, UCLA & Notre Dame. USC definitely proved they were the class of the Pac 12.
#5 Computer Hope The season ended on a disappointing note with the loss to USC in the Rose Bowl, but how amazing has the transformation of Penn St. been under James Franklin? Franklin in his 3rd year led the Lions to an 11-3 record which included wins over Ohio St., Iowa, Michigan St. & Wisconsin en route to a Big 10 championship, their first since 2008. The best part is that it can only get better. QB Trace McSorley & RB Saquon Barkley return next year & Penn St. is recruiting well. The Lions are B-A-C-K!
#6 Computer Hope I’ve been making FSU pay all season for the disastrous loss to Louisville back on September 17th, but if you simply consider it a loss, FSU lost to Louisville, North Carolina by 2 and Clemson by 3. Dalvin Cook was arguably the best RB in the nation. FSU ended the season 10-3 on a 5-game winning streak including a stunning 33-32 win over Michigan in the Orange Bowl. Defensively, the Noles were A LOT better than their stats would indicate. If their TO margin was great, FSU could be the champs.
#7 Computer Hope In much the same way the Seminoles paid for their loss to Louisville, the Buckeyes lived off their early season demolition of Oklahoma. The Buckeyes were definitely exposed in a 31-0 embarrassment at the hands of Clemson, but Ohio St. didn’t look so good for a lot of the season. They lost to Penn St., but barely escaped games against Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan St. & Northwestern. The playoff committee backed themselves into a corner with Ohio St. & they shouldn’t have played Clemson.
#8 Computer Hope The Badgers took care of business in the Cotton Bowl beating a feisty Western Michigan squad to end the year 11-3. It’s hard to rank Wisconsin any lower than this. They beat LSU to start the season & their only 3 losses came against Ohio St., Michigan & Penn St., all by 7 points. Paul Chryst seems like the heir apparent to Barry Alavarez & he should be in Madison for a very long time. In his first two years with Wisconsin, Chryst is 21-6 with a Big 10 West title & 2 bowl wins. I think they only get better.
#9 Computer Hope Like Michigan, this is more of a ranking based on top end talent. When LSU was healthy, they combined an efficient passing attack with Danny Etling behind a DEVASTATING rushing combination of Leonard Fournette and Derius Guice. The defense was arguably the best in the nation which really begs the question of how it was possible for LSU to lose games behind an ELITE rushing attack and an ELITE defense? That is the riddle Ed Orgeron needs to solve because LSU is too good for 8-4.
#10 Computer Hope Losing to Alabama 24-7 in the national semifinal dulled an amazing season for the Huskies who finished 12-2 as Pac 12 champions in Chris Petersen’s 3rd season in Seattle. The loss to Alabama should be instructive going forward & the Huskies are poised to dominate the Pac 12 North for years to come. The one knock is that UW has to beat quality teams. They lost to USC & Alabama with their big wins coming against Stanford, Utah & Washington State. I think it’s a problem they’ll rectify.
#11 Computer Hope The Sooners paid dearly for early season losses to Houston & Ohio St., but roared back winning 10 straight games, going undefeated in Big XII play and then routing Auburn in the Sugar Bowl to finish 11-2. Given their competition, the Sooners possibly saved the best for last. The defense held a solid Auburn running attack in check while the offense rolled behind Baker Mayfield, Joe Mixon, Dede Westbrook and Samarje Perine. Given Ohio St.’s & Washington’s performance in the playoffs, Oklahoma makes a case with a great year.
#12 Computer Hope Even if Colorado was completely unmotivated to play in the Alamo Bowl, Oklahoma St,’s dismantling of the Buffs 38-8 was impressive no matter how you slice it. The Cowboys were up 31-0 going into the 4th quarter in dominant fashion surpassed only by Clemson’s demolition of Ohio State. If you believe the refs robbed the Cowboys in the C.Michigan loss then OK-State’s only real losses were on the road to Baylor & Oklahoma. The 10-3 reads more like 11-2. The Cowboys will be in the national title chase in 2017. You’ve been warned!
#13 Computer Hope Down 24-0 at halftime to Arkansas in the Belk Bowl, the Hokies stormed back outscoring the Hogs 35-0 in the 2nd half to end their season 10-4 with an ACC Coastal title. Take out oddball losses to Georgia Tech & Syracuse & the Hokies could have been 12-2 with a much better bowl slot. First year HC Justin Fuente was a huge success in Blacksburg in his first season. JUCO QB Jerod Evans was a revelation & the Hokies rushing attack gave VT a new offensive identity. That attack with a Bud Foster defense is a dangerous combo.
#14 Computer Hope Losing to Oklahoma 35-19 in the Sugar Bowl isn’t that bad considering Oklahoma probably had their best game of the year and if the Sooners played like that against Ohio St. & Houston, they would have been 12-0 & in the playoffs. War Eagle got off to a rough 1-2 start but their eventual 8-5 record includes losses to Clemson, Alabama & Oklahoma! Those 3 teams finished a combined 39-4! They also lost to Texas A&M early when the Aggies looked like a playoff team & Georgia when Kamryn Pettway was hurt. Very good team. Tough schedule without solid QB.
#15 Computer Hope Let’s just assume Colorado simply wasn’t interested in the Alamo Bowl, and frankly who could blame them considering they were angling for the Rose Bowl and missed out to a team they finished ahead of in the Pac 12 South. The Buffaloes had a banner year finishing 10-4 with a Pac 12 South title when most pundits predicted them to finish dead last before the season began. The real question is whether or not the Buffaloes can build on this breakthrough season. QB Sefo Liufau & a ton of defensive players won’t be returning in 2017.
#16 Computer Hope The Cardinal held off a pretty good North Carolina rally in the Sun Bowl to preserve a 25-23 win & finish the year 10-3. Stanford suffered a bit with 3 losses in 4 games in the early/mid season to start the year 4-3. With Washington & Washington St. playing so well in the North, Stanford was out before they really started. The losses weren’t so bad though. UW on the North. Colorado won the South & Wazzou finished 2nd in the North. Those 3 combined to finish 30-11. Tough way to finish for Christian McCaffery’s career,  but 10-3 isn’t awful.
#17 Computer Hope Early season losses for teams like Oklahoma & LSU took those squads out of the national spotlight. For the Redbirds it was almost the opposite. Louisville lived off a 63-20 hammering of Florida St. to a 9-1 start with their only loss coming at Clemson by 6 points. At that point they were still in the mix for a playoff spot. Then they lost to Houston and then to Kentucky and then to LSU in the Citrus Bowl where Lamar Jackson was exposed against an excellent defense. This is a top-20 team but the 9-4 certainly feels disappointing. They should have been 12-1.
#18 Computer Hope The Broncos proved they belonged by outscoring Wisconsin 16-10 over three quarters of the Cotton Bowl. Unfortunately, Wisconsin outscored them 14-0 in the 1st quarter giving the Badgers a 24-16 win and ended WMU’s perfect season. The loss was tough. Even worse was losing HC PJ Fleck after the season to Minnesota. It’s an odd move to be sure considering WMU could have potentially went 13-1/14-0 next season & Fleck would have been in even more demand. Then again, it’s the Big 10 West and not the Big 10 East. Fleck might be on to something.
#19 Computer Hope Utah probably got more than they bargained for from Indiana in the Foster Farms Bowl. If Richard Lagow was any kind of QB, Utah probably falls to the Hoosiers & doesn’t rank in the top-25. Fortunately, Joe Williams put on a show & ran for 222 yards against an overwhelmed IU defense. Utah had a solid year going 9-4 although the loss to Colorado had to hurt because it cost them the South. They lived off their USC win but it’s worth nothing that the Utes’ 4 losses came by a combined 19 points. Like Colorado, it’ll be interesting to see how Utah reloads with USC back.
#20 Computer Hope Florida isn’t back to where they want to be, but I think the program scored a big win with Jim McElwain staying in Gainesville when rumors were swirling he could have taken off for Oregon. In his 2 seasons at Florida, the Gators have won SEC East titles. Sure they have lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship game both years & they have lost to Florida St. each year but progress takes a bit of time. Last year they were blown out by Michigan in their bowl game. This year they blow out Iowa. They aren’t back to being a top-10 program but they aren’t far.
#21 Computer Hope It was SO REFRESHING to see that Hurricane swagger on display in the Russell Athletic Bowl. THE U came to play & destroyed a solid West Virginia team 31-14. QB Brad Kaaya put on a clinic while the Miami defense held a Dana Holgorsen offense to just 14 points & 11 first downs! It was a tale of 3 season for Miami. They started off by winning 4 straight. Then they lost 4 straight before ending with 5 straight wins. Three of the 4 losses were close & those 4 losses came to Florida St., Notre Dame, Virginia Tech & North Carolina. Pretty good for Mark Richt’s first year.
#22 Computer Hope It took the Bulls overtime to defeat South Carolina, but USF pulled it out 46-39 to finish 11-2 which is the best record in the history of the program that started back in 1997! QB Quinton Flowers and RB Marlon Mack had outstanding years leading a dominating running attack that ranked 5th in the nation at a tick above 285 rushing yards per game. An untimely loss to Temple kept the Bulls from potentially winning the AAC championship but what a season. Taggart bolted USF for Oregon, but the Bulls landed Charlie Strong! I think USF will be fine in the transition.
#23 Computer Hope On the one hand you have a San Diego St. team the destroyed Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl 34-10 with a massive defensive effort that all but destroyed the Cougars rushing attack and picked off Houston QB Greg Ward four times. That Aztec team finished as MW Champs with an 11-3 record. RB Donnel Pumphrey ends his career as the all time leader in rushing yards in D1 history. On the other you have a SD Stat team that lost to S.Alabama, Colorado St. & Wyoming. Weird. HC Rocky Long has put together back to back 11-3 seasons. He’s got the program humming.
#24 Computer Hope I would have liked the Mountaineers coming out a little motivated to play than they showed against Miami-FL in the bowl, but it’s hard to argue a 10-3 season in which your only losses came against Oklahoma, Oklahoma St. and Miami-FL. Nobody picked WVU to finish 3rd in the Big XII so the season was a rousing success. HC Dana Holgorsen has now improved WVU in each season since 2004. His guys are in place & the program is definitely his. I think he has WVU at a point where they need to start competing with Oklahoma for conference titles. That’s the next step.
#25 Computer Hope BYU flew under the radar for most of the season because of their 1-3 start, but the Cougars finished 8-1 in their last 9 games including a 24-21 bowl win over Wyoming that was a lot more impressive than it looks. You can argue BYU didn’t beat anyone of note although they did post wins over Michigan St., Mississippi St., Cincinnati & Arizona, but their 4 losses came by a combined 8 points! Those losses were to UCLA, Boise St., West Virginia & Utah. If BYU finishes 12-0 they were playing in a New Year’s 6, but could they have had an argument for a playoff berth?

DROPPING OUT

#16 WASHINGTON ST. COUGARS: Love the Cougs but they ended the season on a 3-game losing streak to finish 8-5. They were better than this. They also lost their bowl game to Minnesota which is hard to justify considering the mess that Minnesota football during this time. If Wazzou can quit losing early games to FCS teams they can turn into a consistent 10-win team which would put some pressure on Chris Petersen and Washington. Luke Falk coming back next season is going to be interesting.

#17 PITTSBURGH PANTHERS: Really an odd year. Pitt finished 8-5 with 4 close losses but also posted wins over Penn St. & Clemson. I kept them out of the top-25 due to the 5 losses and the bowl loss to Northwestern which didn’t make a lot of sense although Northwestern did become “that” team that nobody in the Big 10 wanted to play. No team in college football had two better wins than Pittsburgh, but the five losses?

#20 IOWA HAWKEYES: It was somewhat of a disappointing season for Iowa given that they went undefeated last year during the regular season, but the Hawkeyes had a chance to salvage a disappointing season by beating Michigan & Nebraska down the stretch. The problem was losing 30-3 to a Florida team looking to crash for the 2nd season in a row. This lead to an 8-5 finish for Iowa which isn’t awful all things considered, but still left something to be desired. The losses to Northwestern and North Dakota State probably should have been wins which could have meant a 10-3 finish which would have looked better as a follow up to 2015’s 11-2 season. I’d love to see Iowa breakthrough and get to the playoffs and even win a national championship. I think it would amazing for college football, but I’m not sure Kirk Ferentz is the guy to get that done.

#21 ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS: Completely collapsed in the 2nd half against Virginia Tech in the bowl game to finish 7-6. When Arkansas was playing at full tilt they were one of the most difficult teams to handle let alone defeat, but the team couldn’t find any real consistency from week to week. There isn’t a bad loss on the schedule outside of Missouri, but that also describes the perils of living in the SEC West. If you play anyone of note out of conference, you could easily be a top-20 squad with 4-5 losses on the year.

#22 TEMPLE OWLS: Top-25 teams shouldn’t be losing bowl games to Wake Forest. Temple was without HC Matt Rhule who bolted for Baylor, but the Owls were still able to win the AAC and get to 10 wins. It’s more interesting that Rhule would jump ship at Temple for Baylor. Art Briles showed you could potentially compete for championships in Waco and I suppose Rhule thinks he can get the Bears over the hump. That’s tough. I wonder why he wouldn’t potentially wait for other jobs to open up given the state Baylor’s program is in currently.

NCAA FOOTBALL POWER 25 – 2016 WEEK 14

The last ranking before the final rankings. As you can see, I’d have Alabama, Ohio St., Michigan & Clemson in the playoffs. The committee is going with Washington over Michigan and given the circumstances it makes perfect sense. I might make a separate post about this at a later date, but one thing that kept coming back to me while watching Virginia Tech/Clemson in the ACC Championship game was this thought, “What if the ACC is the worst conference in college football?” There was a lot of talk about Washington potentially not making the playoffs because they played ridiculous teams in their non-conference slate and the Pac 12 was somewhat down, but could you apply the same metric to the ACC? It’s hard in Clemson’s case because they do have two non-conference wins over SEC schools in Auburn & South Carolina. They also have wins over Louisville and Florida State, two schools who are probably better than any team Washington has faced the entire season that they beat (they lost to USC). Hey I’m not complaining. Clemson’s in and I have them in too, but I wonder just how good the ACC really was in 2016.

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope As if they needed to make a statement, Alabama DEMOLISHED Florida 54-16 in the SEC Championship holding the Gators to ZERO yards rushing and forcing 3 Gator turnovers. The Tide really don’t have a Heisman candidate outside of Jalen Hurts who isn’t being considering a potential winner. It goes to show you the balance of the team. WR Calvin Ridley & TE OJ Howard are NFL stars in the making and Alabama rarely uses them. This squad might be historically great if 15-0.
#2 Computer Hope It sort of bothers me that Ohio State is in the playoffs despite not even winning the Big 10 East, but it actually does make some sense when you think about it. It’s absurd to put 10-2 Oklahoma over Ohio St. when the Buckeyes beat the Sooners 45-24 in Norman. Ohio St. also beat Michigan. That leaves Penn State. Sure Ohio St. lost to the Nittany Lions, but Penn St. has a loss to Pittsburgh that Ohio St. doesn’t have. This also reinforces that ALL regular season games matter, and I LOVE that!
#3 Computer Hope Michigan can’t complain all that much. It’s one thing for Ohio St. to be 11-1 after having a bad day against Penn St. to get a playoff nod, but Michigan has a couple of losses and wound up in 3rd place in the Big 10 East. At least the Buckeyes can say they have a 1st place record. Michigan now gets Florida St. in the Orange Bowl which isn’t a bad consolation prize. A win there puts Michigan at 11-2 and Harbaugh at 21-5 in his first two seasons in Ann Arbor! And maybe Peppers gets the Heisman!
#4 Computer Hope The 42-35 win over Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship game looks closer than it actually was. Clemson never really was in trouble. The Hokies would pull to within a TD and then Clemson would score once or twice to get back to a big lead. It doesn’t really matter because it doesn’t change anything but I was happy to see the committee slide Clemson into the #2 spot ahead of Ohio State. Clemson’s loss was to Pittsburgh who beat Penn St. who beat Ohio State. The Tigers deserve #2.
#5 Computer Hope How amazing is Clay Helton’s first season at USC? At one point the Trojans were 1-3 & there were rumors swirling that Helton wouldn’t survive the season. He made the switch to Sam Darnold at QB and USC ripped off 8 straight wins & are playing in the Rose Bowl! I know they are my power rankings, but if Michigan & Clemson lose while USC hammers Penn St., I’d move the Trojans to #3 in the final rankings. At this very minute they are the 2nd best team in the NCAA behind Alabama.
#6 Computer Hope The Huskies put an exclamation point on the season with a dismantling of Colorado 41-10! Sure they won by 31, but they dominated in every facet of the game. QB Jake Browning threw for 2TD. Myles Gaskin & Lavon Coleman each ran for over 100 yards. UW had the ball for almost 39 minutes! The defense held Colorado to just 9 first downs and 163 total yards. I think the Huskies could have beaten either Ohio St. or Clemson so it’s a tough draw to get Alabama, but they’ll put up a fight.
#7 Computer Hope BIG 10 CHAMPIONS! In just his 3rd year at Penn St., James Franklin has Penn St. winning the Big 10 and playing in the Rose Bowl! What a comeback! It’s tough to decide who has the better comeback story: Franklin bringing Penn St. back to prominence or Tom Crean bringing Indiana basketball back to prominence? You could make a TREMENDOUS case that the playoff teams should be Penn St., Alabama, Oklahoma & USC. The Pittsburgh loss cost PSU one of the playoff spots.
#8 Computer Hope I thought Oklahoma would beat the Cowboys by 20 points. Instead they beat them by 18, 38-20. I thought Oklahoma St. would keep it close for awhile before Oklahoma pulled away. The game was tied 17-17 at the half before OU outscored OK-State 21-3 in the 2nd half. If the Sooners destroy Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, they’ll have won 10 straight games. Assuming Ohio St. & Alabama play in the championship, that could very well mean Oklahoma is the #3 team in the nation by season’s end.
#9 Computer Hope Playing for a Rose Bowl, Wisconsin completely disintegrated in the 2nd half being outscored 24-3 en route to losing 38-31 in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Watching that game, I couldn’t figure out just what in the hell went wrong with the Badgers secondary. Trace McSorely would under throw balls and sometimes make bad passes entirely yet PSU receivers would haul them in inexplicably! What a tough way to end the regular season. Even worse? They get W.Michigan in th Cotton Bowl!
#10 Computer Hope LSU got a whale of an opponent in Louisville when they play in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve. The bowl game might be more important for LSU than almost any other team in football. A win certainly sets the table for LSU going forward with Ed Orgeron at the helm trying to replicate what Dabo Swinney has built at Clemson. A loss could create quite a few questions. Getting Lane Kiffin as OC after the season would also be a MAJOR coup and would be seen as a huge win over Alabama.
#11 Computer Hope Colorado can’t complain too much about losing the Pac 12 and losing out on the Rose Bowl. Almost every single publication picked the Buffaloes to finish last in the Pac 12 South. They won the South & finished 10-3! They also get Oklahoma St. in the Alamo Bowl which is a game they can win & would give UC an 11-3 final record, their best since 1996! I think Coach Mac stays in Boulder and Colorado doesn’t go anywhere. It’ll be tougher with USC getting good but Colorado should do very well.
#12 Computer Hope I like Auburn and I really like Gus Malzahn but drawing Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl is about the worst thing that could have happened to them. The War Eagle nation isn’t going to think about the fact that Auburn started 1-3 and ended up in a New Year’s Six Bowl if the Sooners blow them out. They’ll be thinking that Auburn finished 1-3 with losses to Oklahoma, Alabama & Georgia and Malzhan will find himself on a very hot seat in 2017. Auburn has to be perfect to pull out a victory.
#13 Computer Hope The ACC Championship didn’t go the way Virginia Tech had hoped, but I think they showed out well against Clemson. The Hokies fought hard the entire game before falling 42-35. I was very impressed how the team competed even though there were many chances to fold. It has been a tremendous year in Justin Fuente’s first season. An ACC Coastal championship & a shot at 10 wins if they beat Arkansas in the Belk Bowl which is entirely possible. They’ll be even better next season.
#14 Computer Hope Oklahoma St. actually did a pretty good job moving the football against Oklahoma, but the defense couldn’t keep Oklahoma off the field & that resulted in lots of points for the Sooners and an eventual loss for Oklahoma State. Maybe OSU gets a win if the game is in Stillwater? The Cowboys will get to 10 wins if they beat Colorado in the Alamo Bowl. That will probably be a tall order as I don’t expect Coach Mac to let the Buffaloes coast. That said, this has been an underrated football team.
#15 Computer Hope Dana Holgorsen had to reinvent the Mountaineers program in his image & the finished product is almost complete. If you believe the building block starting point was 2013 when WVU went 4-8, note that in 2014 they improved to 7-6 and then 8-5 in 2015. This year WVU is 10-2 with a shot at 11-2 if they defeat Miami-FL in the Russell Athletic Bowl. The only hurdle left is Oklahoma. The trick now is keeping Holgorsen in Morgantown, something West Virginia couldnt’ do with Rich Rodriguez.
#16 Computer Hope Hard to hammer Washington St. for finishing 7-2 in the Pac 12 considering their only losses were to the Pac 12 South and Pac 12 North champions although they did manage to avoid USC. I still feel like this season is somewhat of a “could have been” season for Mike Leach and the Cougars. They shouldn’t have lost to E.Washington & Boise St. this year meaning 8-4 should be 10-2. That said, a bowl game against Minnesota should put them at 9-4. Back to back 9 wins seasons since 2002-2003.
#17 Computer Hope A lot of people are knocking Pat Narduzzi for Pittsburgh’s lack of defense, but I’d be careful. While it is true that the Panthers allowed 35.6PPG this season, Pittsburgh ranks #10 in the country in sacks and #37 in tackles for loss. They also ranked 2nd in the ACC in QB hurries. This is the kind of defense that can get SCARY good SCARY fast. Pittsburgh’s takeaways don’t match the defensive production. When that starts happening, the Panthers could reach into being a top-10 type of team.
#18 Computer Hope Destroy LSU in the Citrus Bowl and a lot of concerns about Louisville go away pretty fast. Lose to the Tigers in the Citrus Bowl and all of a sudden you have a 9-4 Louisville squad that dropped their last 3 games and lived the entire season on a Week 3 win over Florida State. It also won’t look fantastic for Lamar Jackson if the Redbirds lose to LSU either as it would have been a great statistical season feasting on the dregs of the ACC. Petrino still hasn’t found the magic he had from 2003-2006.
#19 Computer Hope I simply can’t rank FSU ahead of Louisville given how the Cardinals hammered the Noles. If a loss to Pittsburgh early in the season essentially cost Penn St. a chance at being in the playoffs, then a Louisville blowout win can keep a 9-3 Louisville team ahead of a 9-3 Florida St. team. That will change if FSU can beat Michigan in the Orange Bowl! To be fair I think FSU is a lot better than #19. The loss to Louisville was just one of those days & their other losses were to Clemson & UNC.
#20 Computer Hope Like Washington St. this seems like a year that “could” have been for the Hawkeyes. Coming off a 12-2 season with the firepower they had returning, Iowa shouldn’t have dropped games to North Dakota St. and Northwestern meaning their 8-4 should be 10-2. They draw a VERY beatable Florida team in the Outback Bowl so at least the Hawkeyes could get to 9 wins. An 11-2 season on the back of a 12-2 season would have been huge for the program though. Football is better when Iowa wins.
#21 Computer Hope Ouch, Arkansas picked up a bad draw in the bowl game getting a feisty Virginia Tech squad in the Belk Bowl which is played in Charlotte, the scene of the ACC Championship game. It’s a bad draw in a way because the Razorbacks finished the season 4-5 in their last 9 games. A loss would put them at 4-6 in their last 10 but would also have them finish 7-6 which is a game worse than last season. Arkansas can hang with anyone when they are playing well, but this might be game they feel pressure.
#22 Computer Hope Temple just didn’t beat Navy, they CRUSHED the Middies when Navy had EVERYTHING to play for. Western Michigan had a tough time beating Ohio 29-23 so if Navy blows out Temple, the committee had to give thought to jumping Navy ahead of the Broncos. Instead, Temple puts the hammer down & takes home an AAC championship! That’s Matt Rhule’s 2nd 10-win season and he could get to 11 wins with a win over Wake Forest. If you are Oregon, how do you not hire this guy?
#23 Computer Hope People lost sight of Stanford I think because at one point they were 4-3 with the 3 losses coming within a 4-game stretch. That’s tough to overcome but their losses were to Washington (13-1), Washington St. (8-4) and Colorado (10-3). The Cardinal draw North Carolina in the Sun Bowl, a game they could win and get to 10-3. It’ll be interesting to see if Christian McCaffrey comes back for his senior season. It feels like he has unfinished business. If he comes back, Stanford is a title contender.
#24 Computer Hope ROW THE BOAT TO 13-0! It wasn’t the prettiest game but the Broncos got by Ohio 29-23 in the MAC Championship game to finish the season 13-0! The Navy loss guaranteed WMU a trip to a New Year’s Six Bowl and they draw Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl! To be honest, this was a great draw for the Broncos because they’ll have a decent chance at beating Wisconsin. A team that likes to run will typically keep scores down so W.Michigan could be in a close game where anything could happen.
#25 Computer Hope How great does South Florida look now that the season is over and they are sitting on a 10-2 record with their only losses coming against Temple and Florida State!? Drawing South Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl seems a little thin but it would give USF a chance to finish 11-2. HC Willie Taggart has truly done a fantastic job. He did an outstanding job at W.Kentucky before here and now he’s a hot coaching commodity. Does Taggart play the long game & hope for the Big XII?

DROPPING OUT

#25 NAVY MIDSHIPMEN: Talk about the worst time to throw up on yourself!? It was a tough loss but Navy still has Army to play next week and Louisiana Tech to play in the bowl game. Both games should be wins meaning Navy could finish the season 11-3 with a bowl win along with an AAC West division championship. The 11 wins would match last year’s totals giving Navy back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history and 22-5 record over the last 2 seasons!

NCAA FOOTBALL POWER 25 – 2016 WEEK 13

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope The dismantling of Auburn in the Iron Bowl was complete as the Tide held an exceptionally strong Auburn running attack to 66 yards on 26 carries. I think I’ve finally figured out why this might be Alabama’s best team Saban’s ever had, and it’s the idea that Saban himself doesn’t think the team is very good. They are the only Big 5 team undefeated & they’ve destroyed every opponent, yet Saban still has doubts. The gulf between #1 and #2 seems miles apart. I think the Tide finish 15-0.
#2 Computer Hope The Buckeyes took advantage of Michigan mistakes and spotty officiating to defeat the Wolverines 30-27 in double overtime which ended up securing the Big 10 East for Penn State! JT Barrett and Curtis Samuel played really well down the stretch against a Michigan defense that looked tired, especially in the 2nd half/overtime. Now all the Buckeyes can do is wait for the playoff committee to decide on what to do. I think they are praying for Oklahoma, Washington & Clemson to lose.
#3 Computer Hope I thought Michigan was the better team on the field Saturday but a couple of turnovers led to 14 Ohio St. points and the Wolverines defense tired at the end when JT Barrett and Curtis Samuel had quite a bit left in the tank. Michigan’s playoff hopes are dashed, but they can still finish 11-2 which is a win better than last year’s 10-3. Harbaugh is going to win multiple championships in Ann Arbor. I would have loved to have seen Michigan play against Alabama, but it won’t be this season.
#4 Computer Hope Clemson made a statement in their regular season finale by DECIMATING in-state rival South Carolina 56-7! Deshaun Watson threw 6TD passes while Wayne Gallman ran for 100+ and a TD. South Carolina isn’t a horrible team so this was a solid win. I don’t think Watson can win the Heisman given his rushing numbers weren’t that dominant and he threw the 14 picks, but you never know really. If Clemson beats Virginia Tech they are going to the playoffs. It might be their toughest test.
#5 Computer Hope USC ended their regular season beating Notre Dame 45-27 but the game wasn’t really that close as the Trojans were in control from the jump and never let the Irish get close. The win was USC’s 8th straight victory & outside of Alabama, there isn’t a team playing better. Unfortunately for the Trojans, Colorado took care of business at home against Utah preventing USC from winning the Pac 12 South. In their 8 straight wins, the USC defense allowed on average 18.6PPG. That’s a big deal.
#6 Computer Hope Washington St. is a good team and the Huskies treated them like a low end FCS squad. I don’t understand why the Pac 12 isn’t getting much respect. If Washington wins the Pac 12 Championship, they deserve their shot. This is a very fast squad with an offense that is EXTREMELY difficult to contain. Forget the USC loss at this point. The Trojans might be the 2nd best team in nation right now. Does their resume look as good as Alabama’s? No, but the Pac 12 is a lot better than perception.
#7 Computer Hope So why drop Wisconsin from 4th to 7th despite the Badgers beating Minnesota 31-17? Here is the reason: Alabama-Jalen Hurts, Ohio St.-JT Barrett, Michigan-Wilton Speight, Clemson-Deshaun Watson, USC-Sam Darnold, Washington-Jake Browning, Wisconsin……..Bart Houston/Alex Hornibrook? The Badgers keep winning but I think their QB situation could keep them from being one of the ELITE teams in the nation. It’ll be really interesting to see what happens if they beat Penn State.
#8 Computer Hope What a game for Penn State!! I thought it was really interesting how Michigan St. sold out to stop the Penn St. ran and held the Nittany Lions to 77 rushing yards on 33 carries. The Spartans dared Trace McSorley to beat them through the air and he did just that throwing for 376 yards & 4TD going 17 of 23 without an interception. Penn St. has relied heavily this season on Saquon Barkley & McSorleyrunning the football, but McSorely must have gained a ton of confidence airing out against Michigan State.
#9 Computer Hope Oklahoma was on bye this past week but Saturday’s games didn’t fair that well for the Sooners. Ohio St. beating Michigan definitely worked in OU’s favor, but Washington & Clemson winning hurt the Sooners as it solidified both schools’ claim to playoff berths. They’ll get Oklahoma St. in Norman which should equal a win that would push OU to 10-2 and Big XII champs. It will be their 9th straight win. Oklahoma would be an interesting playoff team, but their defense has given up 30+PPG!? Ouch!
#10 Computer Hope Colorado came up with a BIG TIME play early in the 4th when they returned a Joe Williams fumble for a TD which took the Buffaloes 20-16 lead to 27-16 which essentially sealed the game for Colorado. The only two losses Colorado has suffered through are to USC & Michigan. I have both of those teams in my top-5 so Colorado could argue they belong at #6. Like Washington you can point to a weak schedule en route to a 10-2 record, but this is a well balanced team with a tremendous head coach.
#11 Computer Hope Is it OK to say out loud that Derrius Guice might be better than Leonard Fournette? Guice absolutely DESTROYED Texas A&M this past weekend going for 285 yards & 4TD on 37 carries. It brought Guice’s totals for the season to 1,249 rushing yards & 14TD! Over his career he’s averaging 8+ypc and he’s 5’11/225lbs which is IDEAL size for an NFL running back. Naming Ed Orgeron the head coach is a pretty nice move especially with Orgeron’s ties to Louisiana. All he needs to do is recruit! He can.
#12 Computer Hope Like I said with Oklahoma, the weekend didn’t do wonders for Oklahoma St.’s playoff chances, but I don’t even think it’s about getting the playoffs for the Cowboys. They lost earlier to Central Michigan which pretty much eliminates them regardless. Unfair? Absolutely but it is what it is. I think it’s more about OK-State winning the Big XII, getting to the Fiesta and finishing 11-2 with the prospect of having a huge 2017 season that could very well have them fighting for a playoff spot. I’m all in!
#13 Computer Hope No shame in losing to Alabama 30-12 in Tuscaloosa. Auburn was going to have trouble even if Sean White was able to go, but with their starting QB gone, their chances of pulling off a stunner were close to zero. I liked how the Tigers made the Tide work for it though. Sure Alabama ran for 203 yards but it took them 44 carries to get there. The Auburn defense also picked Jalen Hurts off twice. The Georgia loss was ridiculous & it’ll prevent a 10 win season, but 7-2 down the stretch was nice.
#14 Computer Hope You can’t really blame the Cougs for losing to Colorado & Washington in back-to-back weeks. Both those teams are playing for the Pac 12 Championship and are top-10 teams. Coming into their final two games, Wazzou had won 8 straight games and were the last undefeated team in the Pac 12. I actually thought Wazzou looked like the better football team when they played Colorado. The two early season gaffes prevented Mike Leach from having his first double-digit winning season in Pullman.
#15 Computer Hope The Hokies left NO DOUBT Saturday as they hosted in-state rival Virginia and promptly hammered the Cavaliers 52-10! Virginia Tech went up 38-0 before UVA even scored to make it 38-3. HC Justin Fuente wants to run the football and that’s a pretty good strategy if QB Jerod Evans can keep the chains moving against Clemson in the ACC Championship. Keep Clemson’s offense on the field. If the Hokies show up, they are going to make life difficult and I think they can pull off a stunner.
#16 Computer Hope If the best win of the year is Penn St. beating Ohio St., then the 2nd best win of the year is Pittsburgh beating Clemson. The Panthers & Syracuse decided defense was optional to finish the season as the Panthers came away with a 76-61 victory! It was the most points ever scored in an FBS football game and the 76 points allowed is the most in Syracuse football history! All in all the teams scored 20TD! INSANITY! Pittsburgh’s D is terrible, but they have wins over Penn St. & Clemson! Nuts!
#17 Computer Hope Losing to Kentucky? In Papa John’s Stadium? Are you serious Louisville? When Louisville is right and Lamar Jackson is playing well, they can probably beat anyone in the nation outside of Alabama. That said, losing to Houston & Kentucky to close out your season? That’s ridiculous. Louisville needs a bowl win to get to 10-3 which will be Petrino’s first double-digit winning season since returning to the Ville. Let’s hope that the Cardinals lacked for motivation after dropping the game to Houston.
#18 Computer Hope I have to rank the Seminoles behind Louisville because the Cardinals obliterated FSU 63-20 way back on September 17th, but from that point forward, it’s hard to argue the Seminoles haven’t had a great season. The record is sub-par at 9-3, but after the Louisville loss, Florida St.’s only other 2 losses came against North Carolina & Clemson by a combined 5 points. How is this for odd: If FSU beats Clemson & N.Carolina, it would have sent Louisville to the ACC title game despite FSU finishing 11-1!!
#19 Computer Hope Iowa finally played like Iowa over the last 3 weeks of the season. The Hawkeyes showed us why they started last season 12-0 against Nebraska in their season finale. CJ Beathard was brutally efficient while Akrum Wadley & LaShun Daniels ran all over the black shirts! Iowa’s defense smothered Nebraska all day allowing the Huskers just 217 total yards. The Hawkeyes beat Michigan, Illinois & Nebraska the last 3 weeks by the combined score of 82-23. When they were right in 2016, they were top-10.
#20 Computer Hope While Oklahoma & Oklahoma St. were taking the week off to get ready for the de facto Big XII championship game, West Virginia was putting in work against Iowa St., beating the Cyclones 49-19 to improve to 9-2 before taking on Baylor in the season finale. Iowa St. hung around for the first half before WVU dominated the last 30 minutes of the game. Skyler Howard had 300+yds/5TD while Martell Pettaway ran for 181yds/1TD. I hope WVU can close it out in Morgantown with a win for 10-2.
#21 Computer Hope Losing to Missouri 28-24 after taking a 24-7 lead into the half is almost unexplainable. The ranking is a gift obviously and Arkansas finishes 7-5, but in reality outside of the Missouri loss, this is still a team that has 4 losses to Alabama, Texas A&M (when they were rolling), Auburn & LSU (after Orgeron took over). You really think North Carolina or Nebraska deserves to be here over the Hogs? The disappointment is that at best Arkansas can finish 8-5 which is where they finished last season.
#22 Computer Hope The Cardinal might be the quietest 9-3 team in all of college football. After being routed by the Washington schools which effectively took them out of the Pac 12 North competition, Stanford went on to go 6-1 in their last 7 with the lone loss being a 10-5 loss against Colorado. And what about Christian McCaffrey? After Stanford’s bowl, he’s going to have over 2,000 total yards & close to 20TD! It won’t be last year’s Pac 12 championship season but finishing off the year 10-3 would be very sweet.
#23 Computer Hope Western Michigan completed the perfect regular season with a 55-35 win over Toledo to get to 12-0. The game wasn’t even that close as the Broncos took a 45-14 lead into the 4th quarter before the Rockets threw on some garbage time TDs. Ohio took care of business against Akron so the MAC Championship allows WMU to gain even more credibility. He can’t win it, but WMU QB Zach Terrell deserves an invite to NYC for the Heisman if WMU finish 13-0. He’s got 3000yds/30TD with 1INT! Nuts!
#24 Computer Hope If not for their loss to Temple, South Florida would be playing Navy in the AAC Championship game. HC Willie Taggart has done an amazing job with the Bulls taking over a team that was 3-9 in 2012 and improving that by at least 7 wins in just his 4th year in Tampa. The Bulls showcased one hell of an offense this year led by Quinton Flowers & Marlon Mack. They had an outstanding running game combined with big play passing ability. Now if only they had any idea on how to play defense!
#25 Computer Hope I consider the Middies to be 10-2 because I doubt that Army gives them much trouble when they face off in a couple of weeks. Like South Florida, Navy gives up quite a bit on the defensive side of the football, but the Midshipmen can score. How amazing has this year been? They lose Keenan Reynolds and still beat Houston, Memphis & Notre Dame. They also make it to the AAC Championship game, something they never did with Reynolds at QB. How amazing would it be if Navy finished 12-2?

DROPPING OUT

#17 UTAH UTES: The Utes were living all season on their early season win over USC. When you really break it down, they were 4-4 over their last 8 games. If not for three easy games early in the year combined with the USC win before the Trojans became what they are, Utah would essentially be a 6-6/5-7 team. Losing to California & Oregon were crucial. The Utes could still finish out the year 9-4 if they win their bowl game, but I think they’d have to feel pretty lucky to get there.

#18 TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS: Easily the most disappointing team in college football and it isn’t even remotely close. The Vols finished their last 7 games with a 3-4 record including losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt! That’s ridiculous especially considering the Vols hammered Florida and the Gators wound up as SEC East champions. Losing to Alabama and Texas A&M? Fine. Finish 10-2 and at worst win your bowl game and end the season at 11-3. The fact that Tennessee finished 8-4 when every other SEC East team was in the toilet is telling. There is no way Butch Jones wins with this program.

#19 FLORIDA GATORS: If Tennessee sucks and you get waxed by Tennessee, how can you be in the top-25? Getting blasted by Florida St. was terrible and now Florida is 8-3 facing an Alabama team that should be favored by 50 points. To Jim McElwain’s credit, Florida’s defense the last two years has been exceptional and I shudder to think how good Florida could be should they ever find a legitimate QB to take over. I can’t rank  Florida in the top-25 because I’m not sure they deserve to be there, but McElwain is proving to be one of the elite coaches in the nation. Tennessee should take note. Their window is now closed.

#21 HOUSTON COUGARS: Beat Louisville and then turn around and lose to Memphis? If that wasn’t bad enough, HC Tom Herman took the job at Texas. When it rains it pours.

#22 BOISE ST. BRONCOS: That loss to Air Force was killer. It knocked the Broncos out of the MW championship game. Hard to knock a 10-2 squad but losses to Wyoming & Air Force hurt them. I couldn’t justify ranking Boise and not Wyoming and the Cowboys just lost to New Mexico.

#23 NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS: Losing to Iowa 40-10 relegated Nebraska to 3rd place status in the Big 10 West. Do 6 teams from the Big 10 deserve to be ranked in the top-25? Maybe, but Nebraska down the stretch showed who they really were. They went 2-3 in their last 5 games and struggled in wins over Indiana & Minnesota. That isn’t a top-25 squad.

#24 TEXAS A&M AGGIES: The Trevor Knight injury was terrible but 2-4 in your last 6 including losses to Ole Miss and Mississippi State? Destroyed a season when this very well was at worst a top-12 or top-15 squad. The team has a legitimate shot at ending up 8-5. After starting 6-0, that is terrible.

NCAA FOOTBALL POWER 25 – 2016 WEEK 12

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope It took Alabama a little while to get started playing Chattanooga, but the final ended up being another blowout with the Tide winning 31-3. The only thing left for Alabama to do is take care of business in the Iron Bowl and they guaranteed their spot as the #1 seed in the college football playoff as I don’t suspect Florida will pose much of a theat. In 9 of Alabama’s 11 wins, the Tide defense has give up 14 or fewer points. Alabama is giving up 1.18TD/game defensively. Only LSU is better.
#2 Computer Hope The Buckeyes were a special teams play away from losing to Michigan St. which would have been a disaster! The past month has proven to be a doubtful month for Ohio State. Sure they have the 62-3 win over Nebraska, but how good is Nebraska really? Also in that month is the loss to Penn St., a 1-point win over Michigan St., a 4-point win over Northwestern and a 7-point win over Wisconsin. The playoff committee wants Ohio St. in. You can see it, but they have to beat Michigan.
#3 Computer Hope The 20-10 win over Indiana in the Big House isn’t as bad as it looks. Michigan still looked fantastic on defense holding IU QB Richard Lagow in check along with Indiana’s running game. Offensively John O’Korn didn’t look good at all, but Michigan stayed with the program and ran the ball 50 times for 225yds/2TD. De’Veon Smith 158 himself. They’ll need to play A LOT better next week in Columbus if they want to win the Big 10 East & finish 11-1. Losing Wilton Speight hurts.
#4 Computer Hope While Michigan & Ohio St. were struggling, Wisconsin was in West Lafayette giving Purdue a 49-20 thrashing. Like Alabama, the Badgers had a little trouble waking up but exploded for 35 points in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-10 lead into the half. Wisconsin dominated time of possession holding onto the ball for almost 39 minutes. They played Wisconsin football running it 56 times with Corey Clement going for 112yds. Beat Minnesota this week and you are Big 10 West champs.
#5 Computer Hope There was some thought that Wake Forest could make things interesting against the Tigers, but Clemson scored 21 first quarter points to set the tone en route to a convincing 35-13 road win. RB Wayne Gallman has his biggest game of the season rushing for 161yds/2TD. That gives Gallman 831yds for the season and I thought for sure he’d be over 1,000 but this actually just his 4th game over the 100 mark. With potentially 4 games to go, the junior from Georgia should reach 1,000 yards!
#6 Computer Hope The 36-14 win over UCLA gave USC their 7th straight victory. In those 7 games the Trojans are +140 in point differential. Alabama is also 7-0 in their last 7 with their point differential at +191. In those 7 wins, USC QB Sam Darnold is 162/236 (69%) for 2,039yds (291yds/G) with 22TD/7INT. Right now, Darnold is playing like a Heisman candidate and the Trojans are arguably the #2 team in the nation. If Utah beats Colorado they are the Pac 12 South champions. Outstanding season.
#7 Computer Hope How do you get over a loss to USC? You hammer Arizona State 44-18! QB Jake Browning didn’t have his best game against the Sun Devils, but Myles Gaskin got loose and the Huskies defense did a fantastic job shutting down the ASU running attack while also wrecking ASU QB Manny Wilkins for 6 sacks and a pick. When UW’s pass rush can get off like this they are nearly unstoppable. They’ll need a big effort next week against Washington St. with the Pac 12 North title up for grabs.
#8 Computer Hope Rutgers stinks and you can make an argument they aren’t even really a Big 10 team, but going on the road within the conference and hammering an opponent 39-0 is impressive. Saquon Barkely, but Penn St. is winning because the defense is playing with tremendous swag. The Nittany Lions have an opportunity to create history here. If they don’t let down against Michigan St., they likely win the Big 10 East. If they can upend Wisconsin they can win the Big 10 and get to the playoffs!
#9 Computer Hope The 38-24 win over Washington St. sealed the deal for me. I’ve been pulling for Colorado and Coach MacIntyre all season, but on the field Saturday it really looked like Wazzou was bigger, stronger & faster. It didn’t matter. Colorado pulled away when it mattered most and ended up with a 38-24 win and control of their own destiny. Beat Utah and the Buffs finish 10-2 as Pac 12 South champs. Can they beat Washington? Yes I think so. I think they’ll be brimming with confidence by then.
#10 Computer Hope West Virginia was at home with everything to play for. It didn’t matter. Oklahoma walked into Morgantown and went up 34-0 before the Mountaineers even had time to blink en route to a 56-28 victory. It might be time to forget the losses to Ohio St. & Houston early in the season. The Sooners have won 8 straight and are the only Big XII team left undefeated in conference play. Beat Oklahoma St. and Oklahoma will be Big XII champions with a 9-game winning streak. Is it enough?
#11 Computer Hope I’m not completely willing to jump ship on Louisville just because they were blown out by Houston. Lamar Jackson is still arguably the most dynamic QB in college football and even with the loss he should still be the favorite to win the Heisman. Sometimes you have bad games and remember that Louisville is still 9-2. The playoffs are gone but beat Kentucky & win your bowl game. That would put Louisville at 11-2 with incredible momentum for 2017 because Jackson will return in ’17.
#12 Computer Hope War Eagle had no hangovers from their loss to Georgia last week, pasting Alabama A&M 55-0 behind Kam Martin’s 176 rushing yards & Kerryon Johnson’s 108 rushing yards. Auburn can’t win the SEC West even if they upset Alabama in Tuscaloosa next week, but the season has to feel extremely good considering the way it started. Auburn started off the year 1-2 but then went 7-1 in their next 8. Maybe they can’t win the Iron Bowl, but a bowl win would give Auburn a 9-4 record to end.
#13 Computer Hope It’s not your older brother’s TCU team, but walking into Ft. Worth and destroying the Frogs 31-6 is impressive nonetheless! Justin Hill and Chris Carson combined to rush for 300 yards on 33 carries, completely steamrolling the TCU defense which is something we aren’t used to seeing under Gary Patterson. Now BEDLAM! I think Oklahoma St. makes things interesting with a win especially if a couple of the other conference champions wind up having a couple of losses. It could change.
#14 Computer Hope Essentially LSU was done in by a defensive brain cramp that led to a 98-yard TD pass from Austin Appleby to Tyrie Cleveland. Without that play LSU doesn’t lost 16-10 but wins 10-9. Theoretically. I can’t hammer the Tigers too much. Lenoard Fournette wasn’t 100% for this game & he probably makes a difference too. LSU has arguably the best or 2nd best defense in the nation, but they have issues offensively. If they can score 20 points, I’d venture to say they are unbeatable. Tough loss.
#15 Computer Hope The Razorobacks did everything they could to give the game to Mississippi St., but Arkansas held on and beat the Bulldogs 58-42! It was the highest scoring output against the MSU defense all season! Austin Allen had an outstanding game tossing for 303yds/2TD. RB Rawleigh Williams had a career game going for 205yds/4TD on only 16 carries! It was the most yards & TDs Williams has ever had in a game. When the Hogs are on, they are arguably the 2nd best team in the nation.
#16 Computer Hope I acutally thought Washington St. looked bigger, more physical and faster than Colorado on Saturday night, but the Buffaloes were able to turn it on late & leave Wazzou in the dust 38-24. To be honest, it doesn’t matter. Washington St. was going to have to beat Washington regardless of the outcome with Colorado if they wanted to win the Pac 12 North. That doesn’t change. I will say this however, after watching the Cougs play Colorado, I think they have a shot at beating Washington.
#17 Computer Hope The 30-28 loss to Oregon hurts. The Ducks eliminated Utah from any hope of winning the Pac 12 championship. Even if the Utes manage to beat Colorado in Boulder next week, they can’t leap USC in the Pac 12 South standings. Utah feels like the Kansas City Chiefs of college football. They’ve done a good job winning the turnover margin & playing their kind of football which controls the ball and runs it. It’s not sexy but it wins games. Unfortunately for Utah, it didn’t win them enough.
#18 Computer Hope QB Josh Dobbs is playing out of his mind the last 3 games and offensively the Volunteers are averaging 56PPG over their last three games, all wins. The problem is that Tennessee gave up 36 points to Kentucky a week ago and 37 points to Missouri this past Saturday! Where in the world has the defense gone? With Florida beating LSU, the Vols can’t win the East, but they can still get to 10-3 if they beat Vandy to end the season & win the bowl game. Somehow, 10-3 feels disappointing.
#19 Computer Hope Lost in all the talk about Alabama and the SEC West is the job Jim McElwain has done at Florida. With Florida’s 16-10 win over LSU in Baton Rouge no less, Florida clinched the SEC East for the 2nd straight time. All McElwain does is win SEC East championships! In his 2 seasons, McElwain is 18-6 overall and 13-3 in SEC play! Even more impressive is that he’s done this with essentially no QB and a very good defense. Can you imagine how good the Gators will be with a decent offense?
#20 Computer Hope Notre Dame is a lot better football team than their 4-7 record would indicate so I don’t think you can understate what a great win it was for Virginia Tech to go into South Bend and get a come from behind 34-31 victory over the Irish. If nothing else the team has to be riding high on confidence. The Hokies still have to take care of business against Virginia to lock down the ACC Coastal, but if they can beat the Wahoos, they’ll get a shot at Clemson. I think Virginia Tech could stun.
#21 Computer Hope Houston beat the brakes off Louisville 35-10 in a defensive effort for the ages. The Cougars defense held Louisville QB Lamar Jackson to 33 yarsd rushing on 25 carries! They also sacked him 11 times and recorded 9 QB hurries. True frosh DT Ed Oliver had a herculean type game and Oliver has to be in the running to be a 1st Team All-American has a freshman! When Houston is firing on defense that are INCREDIBLY tough to beat. Beat Memphis and the Cougars can finish 10-2.
#22 Computer Hope It’s Boise St. and the Broncos are 10-1 so you have to rank them right? Boise St. hammered UNLV this past week 42-25 behind RB Jeremy McNichols and his 206 rushing yards & 4TD. Boise St. has a pretty darn good set of triplets. McNichols has rushed for 1575yds/22TD while QB Brett Rypien has passed for 3025yds/22TD. WR Thomas Sperbeck has 1070 receiving yards & 9TD of his own. Oddly enough, Boise cannot win the Mountain West unless Wyoming loses to New Mexico.
#23 Computer Hope Maryland isn’t great so Nebraska’s 28-7 win shouldn’t raise any eyebrows but I think the Cornhuskers have to be fairly pleased with the play of QB Ryker Fyfe. The senior completed 60+% of his passes against Maryland which is something Nebraska fans rarely see with Tommy Armstrong under center. Nebraska is a solid team with Armstrong at QB but sometimes a team gets stuck with a QB that can’t take them to that next level. Armstrong as been that way for the Cornhuskers.
#24 Computer Hope UTSA is likely to become bowl eligible next week so A&M’s 23-10 win over the Roadrunners isn’t that bad. This is simply a different team without Trevor Knight under center. It’ll be hard to keep Texas A&M in the top-25 next week if they fall to LSU which is likely. It wasn’t that long ago that Texas A&M was 6-0 getting ready for Alabama in a game many thought was the de facto SEC West championship. Then injuries hit & the Aggies have suffered. I hope 8-3 doesn’t finish with 8-5.
#25 Computer Hope The Broncos took care of business against Buffalo this past week blasting the Bulls 38-0 behind QB Zach Terrell’s 445 passing yards & 4TD. WMU improved to 11-0 with their biggest tests on tap. You can make a great case that the two best teams in the MAC outside of WMU are Ohio & Toledo. Western gets Toledo this week & Ohio in the MAC Championship if the Bobcats beat Akron. I think beating Ohio & Toledo adds more credence to Western’s eventual 13-0 record.

DROPPING OUT

#18 WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS: West Virginia had everything to play for against Oklahoma and were playing Morgantown! That should have made a difference. Instead the Mountaineers laid an egg and have been beaten by both Oklahoma St. and Oklahoma. You can certainly make an argument that the only two teams in the Big XII worth a darn are both Oklahoma schools so WVU not being able to beat either is a black mark against them. West Virginia can easily win their final two and wind up 10-2 but the Big XII championship is lost. Getting 10 wins would be a tremendous season, giving WVU a lot of momentum for 2017.

#22 SAN DIEGO ST. AZTECS: Wyoming was able to beat Boise St. as well so the Aztecs falling to the Cowboys shouldn’t be a huge surprise. Just when I have the guts to rank SD State, they let me down with a loss. First to South Alabama. Now to Wyoming. San Diego St. will get a shot at a rematch assuming Wyoming can beat New Mexico next week. The Aztecs already have the Mountain West West locked up and a Wyoming win next week would give the Cowboys the Mountain West East.

NCAA FOOTBALL POWER 25- 2016 WEEK 11

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope Mississippi St. beat Texas A&M a week ago this week Alabama beats the Bulldogs like an untrained pup 51-3! Jalen Hurts was unstoppable throwing for 347 yards & 4TD while also rushing for 100 yards and a TD. Damien Harris barely played. What’s scary about Alabama is that they are likely to win the national championship this season but Jalen Hurts is around for at least two more seasons! If he sticks around all four years, could he win a national championship in all 4 seasons?
#2 Computer Hope The Buckeyes had no problems destroying Maryland 62-3 to run their record to 9-1, but in the irony of all ironies, the Michigan loss to Iowa puts the screws to Ohio St. in the worst way. If Penn St. wins out and Ohio St. beats Michigan, then Penn St. wins the Big 10 East by virtue of having beaten Ohio State! The Buckeyes could easily be 11-1 to end the season coming off a huge win over Michigan and miss out on both the playoffs & the Big 10 championship game. Every week a season!
#3 Computer Hope My power rankings reflect how I feel about the teams right now. At this point LSU is the #3 team in the nation. Arkansas is a legit top-12 team that a week ago treated Florida like they were Valdosta State. LSU then took Arkansas to the woodshed. Derrius Guice ran for 252 yards & 2TD on 21 carries. Leonard Founette ran for 98yds/3TD on 17 carries. As a team LSU ran for 390 yards in a 38-10 win. They gave Alabama ALL the Tide could handle & Bama is by far the #1 team in the nation.
#4 Computer Hope Losing to Iowa hurts but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. So you lost on the road 14-13? Big deal. Michigan is still 9-1 and they were going to have to beat Ohio St. anyway if they wanted to win the Big 10. That doesn’t change things here. Win out and you are 12-1 and likely the #2 seed in the playoffs. You can be sure Jim Harbaugh is going to use this game for motivation for the rest of the season. You never want to lose, but if Michigan had to, it’s good it came against Iowa.
#5 Computer Hope This is where the insanity begins. The biggest winner from Iowa’s upset over Michigan is Wisconsin! The Badgers are likely the Big 10 West champions barring they lose to either Purdue or Minnesota, and the crazy part is that they’ll likely take on Penn St. in the Big 10 championship game! If that happens I think Wisconsin wins making the 11-2 Badgers Big 10 champions and likely a playoff team! It would feel hollow with losses to Michigan & Ohio St., but I’m sure Wisconsin won’t mind!
#6 Computer Hope Clemson can’t fall much further than #6. I understand you want the ball in Dashaun Watson’s hands but teams don’t win football games when they pass the ball 70 times! The loss to Pittsburgh hurts, but like Michigan, it doesn’t much matter. As long as Clemson beats Wake Forest next week, they’ll win the Atlantic and likely the ACC Championship making them 12-1 and a lock for a playoff spot. Clemson has lived on the edge for awhile now. You knew it would catch up at some point.
#7 Computer Hope Clemson’s loss to Pittsburgh almost destroys any chance Louisville had of getting into the playoff picture. Now the Cardinals need a tremendous amount of help to somehow get into the thick of things. Wake has to beat Clemson which would push Louisville into the ACC Championship game. A 12-1 Redbird team would be hard to keep out although the resume is surely lacking. Louisville’s only good win came against FSU a lifetime ago and this past week had difficult time with Wake.
#8 Computer Hope It’s like this is a completely different team now that Sam Darnold took over at QB, and the amazing part is that the defense has responded more than the offense. Washington has an DYNAMIC offense and the Trojans tossed them around like they were a solid high school team. Over the past 6-7 weeks, this might be the best team in the nation not named Alabama. Can they win the Pac 12 South? They need Washington St. to beat Colorado and for Colorado to beat Utah. It’s very possible.
#9 Computer Hope As with Michigan and Clemson, the loss to USC doesn’t necessarily mean anything. If Washington takes care of business against Arizona St. & Washington St. then the Huskies emerge as Pac 12 North Champions at 11-1. Unless things fall right they are also in a spot not unlike Wisconsin where they won’t face the opposing division’s best team. Unless things fall right for USC, the Huskies will likely get Utah or Colorado, a couple of teams they should beat. A 12-1 UW is playoff bound.
#10 Computer Hope What a renaissance for the Big 10! I have 4 of their teams in my Power-25 while the SEC has just two! Penn St. escaped Bloomington with a 45-31 win over Indiana that wasn’t as impressive as I had hoped from a defensive perspective, but nice nonetheless because Kevin Wilson is doing a great job with Indiana. As long as Penn St. beats Rutgers and Michigan St. to end the season, they win the Big 10 East if Ohio St. beats Michigan. A win over Wisconsin could mean a playoff berth!
#11 Computer Hope Utah has absolutely no problem with Arizona St. this past weekend hammering the Sun Devils 49-26 despite going down 13-0 early. Utah would outscore ASU 49-13 over the final 3 quarters as Joe Williams and Troy Williams were on FIRE! The defense needs to get a lot better as the Utes have given up 28PPG over their last 7 games, but the simple math is win and get in. The early season win over USC is gold right now. Beat Colorado and the Utes get a show at the Pac 12 title.
#12 Computer Hope The dream season continues for the Buffs as they took care of Arizona and ran their record to 8-2 with a 49-24 win. The Buffaloes couldn’t be in a better position than they are right now. Defensively they are playing extremely well and they finish the season with two home games against Washington St. & Utah. Win both & they win the Pac 12 South with a shot at the Pac 12 championship. The question will be whether an 11-2 Pac 12 Champion Colorado squad can crash the playoffs.
#13 Computer Hope Auburn kept it together for six straight wins but at some point you sort of knew a game like this would happen. Staring RB Kamryn Pettway didn’t play because of injury. QB Sean White is beaten up. The O-Line has a few injuries. The defense actually played well not allowing a TD by the Bulldogs but a couple of 4th quarter FGs sealed the deal. Auburn could still get to 10 wins if they win out, but even if they were to beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl, they can’t win the SEC West crown.
#14 Computer Hope Arkansas certainly got taken to the woodshed by LSU but this is still a 6-4 team with losses to LSU, Auburn, Alabama and Texas A&M (when Texas A&M had a healthy Trevor Knight!). The Hogs should beat Mississippi St. and Missouri to end the season 8-4 despite both games being on the road and a bowl win puts them at 9-4 which would be the best record they’ve posted in the Bret Bielema era. They are the best 6-4 team in the nation & are on the cusp of hitting that 10-11 win mark.
#15 Computer Hope Washington St. put away Cal like it was nothing, beating the Bears 56-21 and doing a pretty good job of limiting Cal’s scoring ability. The Bears had averaged 40PPG coming into this contest and the Cougars held Cal to their lowest point total of the year. Wazzou’s defense has actually been pretty good this season allowing only 24.5PPG. WSU is the last remaining team in the Pac 12 with an undefeated conference record. Their two biggest tests: Colorado & Washington are up next!
#16 Computer Hope Starting 1-2 to open the season seems like ages ago and all Oklahoma has done is win 7 straight to get to 8-2 with a real shot at 10-2 and a conference championship. The Ohio St. loss looks more than reasonable at this point, but for those wondering if a Big XII champion Oklahoma team could make the playoffs, look no further to the fact Ohio St. might not even win the Big 10 East! Still, if OU hammers West Virginia & Oklahoma St. to end the season, they’ll make it quite interesting.
#17 Computer Hope It wasn’t pretty but Oklahoma St. survived Texas Tech 45-44 despite not having the ball for all that much of the afternoon. The last two weeks have been close, but they’ve been wins and keep in mind that Oklahoma St. is the only team to have beaten West Virginia! If the Cowboys win out they’ll win the Big XII and that complicates things because the loss to Central Michigan would loom LARGE over the season. For now they have to beat TCU & Oklahoma. Both coming on the road!
#18 Computer Hope The Mountaineers are the one team that could make it very interesting in the Big XII. If the Mountaineers can get by Oklahoma this week and the Sooners take care of business against Oklahoma St. in BEDLAM, then West Virginia would be an 11-1 conference champion with their only loss coming on the road to a solid Oklahoma St. team. They’d also have wins over Oklahoma, TCU, Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, BYU & Kansas State. That isn’t a bad resume, but WVU needs to win.
#19 Computer Hope Texas A&M is just a different team without Trevor Knight. It doesn’t make up for the complete meltdown in the 4th quarter against Ole Miss this past week, but the dream season is over. The Aggies still can win out and get to 9-3 which means 10 wins is on the table. Getting to double digit wins would have to feel fairly redemptive for Kevin Sumlin given the mass exodus he had at the QB position heading into the season. They’re better than this, but sometimes the injury bug hits us.
#20 Computer Hope You have to really respect Nebraska with their 24-17 win over Minnesota. The Gophers probably shouldn’t have been in the game, but Minny went up early 7-0 and then stretched the lead to 17-10 at halftime. The Cornhuskers were coming off back-to-back losses to both Wisconsin & Ohio State so some let down could have been expected. Keep this in mind though. If Wisky wins out some think they’ll get to the playoffs at 11-2. If the Badgers lose & Nebraska wins out, they’d be 11-2 also!
#21 Computer Hope The Vols keep their hopes and dreams for winning the SEC East title alive by beating Kentucky 49-36 on Saturday. On the one hand you can look at the offensive output and marvel that Tennessee had almost 3 players go over 100 yards rushing! On the other hand you can look in horror as a Vols fan and see that your defense gave up 36 points to Kentucky & 443 rushing yards! Did I say they played Kentucky? UT should win out & get to 9-3, but even that feels disappointing.
#22 Computer Hope The Aztecs hammered Nevada this past week 46-16 and would actually rank much higher in these rankings if not for the slip up against South Alabama back on October 1st. In hindsight that loss doesn’t make much sense but SD State will definitely get to make up for it if they win out and finish 12-1. It’ll be difficult for them to wind up in the New Year’s 6 if Western Michigan wins out, but SD State is a fun rushing team to watch. They’ll run it down your throats regardless if you stack.
#23 Computer Hope Boise St. is on a collision course with San Diego State in the MWC championship game. Boise’s one slip up came on the road to Wyoming in a 30-28 loss, but they’ve righted the ship including a 52-16 blowout win over Hawaii this past weekend. Boise St. could be the one team to shake up the playoff race. They have a win over Washington State. What if Wazzou wins the Pac 12 and the Big XII champion has two losses while Boise St. wins out and finishes 12-1? Can you keep them out?
#24 Computer Hope ROW THE BOAT!!! Western Michigan’s 37-21 win over Kent St. last week put them at 10-0, a record only matched by Alabama! What’s interesting about Western Michigan at this point is that the two most difficult teams in the MAC for them are probably Ohio & Toledo. They’ll get Toledo in the season finale and Ohio in the MAC Championship but if WMU gets to 13-0 they’ll get in the New Year’s Six. If it happens I hope they draw Louisville, Michigan or Ohio State. Let them play!
#25 Computer Hope I’m not completely willing to cut bait on Virginia Tech just yet. Sure the 30-20 loss to Georgia Tech is a tough one, but the Yellow Jackets are a system team and sometimes that system beats you. Virginia Tech will still in the Coastal as long as they don’t lose to Virginia in the season finale. At the end of the day, the Hokies still have wins over North Carolina, Miami-FL, Pittsburgh & Duke. If you want to put Florida or Florida State here I wouldn’t argue, but I’ll stick with VA Tech.

DROPPING OUT

#18 NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS: Seriously? Lose to Duke 28-27? Carolina has way too much talent to lose to the Blue Devils. The loss stings even more so now that Virginia Tech lost to Georgia Tech which would have opened the door for UNC to get to the ACC title game. Now the Heels have to hope that Virginia Tech loses to Virginia in the Hokies’ season finale. Ten wins is still on the table for UNC but they have to win their final 2 games and their bowl to get to 10-3.

#20 FLORIDA ST. SEMINOLES: I guess it’s cool to beat the pants off Boston College, but the Golden Eagles were 1-5 in conference play heading into this game and it was played at Doak Walker. Isn’t this the sort of game Florida St. should win 45-7? The resume for FSU is fairly weak. Sure their 3 losses have come against UNC, Clemson & Louisville, but the Louisville loss was humiliating and their best win is….Ole Miss way back in Week 1? Let’s see them hammer Syracuse & Florida to end the season and we’ll talk.

#25 FLORIDA GATORS: Florida can’t even look good when they are beating South Carolina 20-7. Florida 7-2 but they’ve played exactly 2 teams worth their salt and the Gators were blown out in both games. Florida ends their regular season with back to back road games against LSU and Florida State. Win both games convincingly and Florida will not only garner a lot more respect, but they’ll also find themselves back in the SEC Championship game as SEC East champions. Last year the Gators ended the season on a 3-game losing streak. I’m sure they’d like to avoid a repeat performance.

NCAA FOOTBALL POWER 25 – 2016 WEEK 10

RANK TEAM COMMENTS
#1 Computer Hope That the best defense the Tide has seen all year & they still rolled up 300+ total yards & dominated time of possession. The big problem for opposing teams is beating Alabama in the trenches. The Tide ran for 216 yards on 51 carries but it limited LSU to just 33 rushing yards on 27 carries. That’s domination up front at the point of attack and is the main reason why there is Alabama and there is everyone else. I still think Auburn could pose a challenge but it would be a long shot at best. This is a great team.
#2 Computer Hope The Wolverines did to Maryland what they’ve been doing all season which is brutalize teams with their running attack combined with suffocating defense. Michigan ran for 273 yards & 5TD as De’Veon Smith got loose for 114yds/3TD. The Blue & Maize were up 35-0 at the half before finishing it 59-3. If there is a team that is playing close to Alabama it’s Michigan. They play the same type of trench football that has been extremely effective for both teams. They seem to be on a collision course.
#3 Computer Hope Beating Syracuse 54-0 is a lot more impressive than at first glance. This is the same Syracuse team that was on a 2-game winning streak with sky high confidence. It’s the same Syracuse team that beat Virginia Tech 31-17! That same Hokies team that Clemson is likely to see in the ACC Championship game. The wins over Auburn and Louisville keep looking better and better & if Auburn beats Alabama, Clemson likely can avoid playing either Alabama or Michigan in the playoff semifinals it would seem.
#4 Computer Hope What more can the Huskies do to garner a bit more respect? Overlooked in the first playoff poll, Washington went on the road to Cal and HAMMERED the Bears 66-27! QB Jake Browning threw for 378yds/6TD. Lavon Coleman ran for 108. WR John Ross put up 208yds/3TD while WR Dante Pettis added 104yds/3TD. UW put up over 700 yards of total offense! The defense forced Cal into 3 turnovers and held the Bears to 1 of 14 on 3rd down! Browning is now on pace to throw 53TD! This team is underrated.
#5 Computer Hope We all knew going into Columbus to face Ohio St. after playing in Madison was going to be difficult but 62-3!? That isn’t a typo. Ohio St. beat Nebraska 62-3 when the Huskers had everything to play for! After an OK 3-week stretch, Ohio St. EXPLODED when it needed to most cementing themselves as the best 1-loss team in the nation. It’s hard to imagine Ohio St. losing when they play football like this. They utterly dominated every phase of the game. Will they be able to do this against Michigan?
#6 Computer Hope The Cardinals realized they needed some style points so they went into Boston College and buried the Eagles 52-7. The Redbirds were up 38-0 at halftime as Lamar Jackson put on a show rushing for 185yds/3TD and passing for 231yds/4TD. At this point it seems obvious that Louisville is going 11-1 and that Jackson is going to win the Heisman, but the real questions surrounding Louisville have to do with their ability to make the playoffs as a 1-loss squad. I think they need Ohio St. & Washington to lose.
#7 Computer Hope It cannot be overstated how important Sean White is to the Auburn football team. White wasn’t supposed to play in the game against Vanderbilt, but Gus Malzahn summoned him to the field with the Tigers down 13-10. White responded and Auburn outscored the Commodores 13-3 to finish with a 23-16 too close for comfort win over Vandy. Auburn is going to run you to death with Kerryon Johnson & Kamryn Pettway but White is the glue that holds the team together. He’s their hope of beating Bama.
#8 Computer Hope I said last week that Northwestern is the team in the Big 10 nobody really wants to play so Wisconsin going into Evanston and beating the Wildcats 21-7 speaks volume about their play. The Badgers did it their way too by pounding the ball relentlessly and wearing down an overmatched Northwestern defense. Wisconsin held the ball for 40+ minutes and ran the football 57 times. They didn’t commit a turnover and was penalized just once. With Nebraska losing Wisconsin should win the Big 10 West.
#9 Computer Hope Forget the 10-0 loss to Alabama for a second. The Tigers gave the Crimson Tide all they could handle and it was locked in a 0-0 tie for 3 quarters. If LSU plays this kind of football the rest of the way, I don’t think they lose again which means a potential 10-3 record in a season that many considered lost. Remember too that LSU has 3 losses by a combined 17 points to Alabama, Auburn & Wisconsin. LSU needs to figure out their QB situation because Derrius Guice is a beast & LSU could be just as good in 2017.
#10 Computer Hope Starkville can be a scary place to play at times and A&M fell victim to the cowbells as Trevon Knight went down to injury & the Aggies couldn’t quite mount the comeback falling to Mississippi St. 35-28. It’s hard to underscore just how important Knight is to the offense because of his ability to run & losing that ability was killer. On the other hand, A&M’s defense was deplorable giving up 365 rushing yards to the Bulldogs! It was MSU’s biggest rushing game this season and largest total they’ve had since 2010!
#11 Computer Hope That was a curb-stomping! Arkansas welcomed Florida into Fayetteville & then beat the brakes off them 31-10! Arkansas was relentless in their running game going for 223 yards on 49 carries. Arkansas’ rush defense was equally as good holding Florida’s ground game to 12 yards on 14 carries. That is what getting killed in the trenches looks like. The Hogs could win out but they’ve got LSU coming up in Arkansas followed by a trip to Starkville, which is dangerous as Texas A&M just found out. A lot to decide still.
#12 Computer Hope Utah was the one team in my Power-25 that was on bye this past week! Utah is being hurt a bit by the Pac 12 not being that great of a conference. Just ask Washington! The win over USC looks better and better as the Trojans keep winning, but outside of Colorado, Washington & Washington St., there isn’t much. Stanford is down. Arizona is down. Oregon is way down. Arizona St. is down. UCLA is down. A lot of teams that most thought would do well haven’t panned out. It certainly hurts the Utes.
#13 Computer Hope Another week another win for Sam Darnold and company. This past weekend the Trojans rolled up Oregon 45-20 which probably isn’t as impressive as it normally would be with the Ducks sitting at 3-6. USC has now won 5-straight games and in those 5 games Darnold has gone 114/167 (68%) for 1,485 yards & 18TD/3INT. USC has an average winning score of 40-19! They’ll get a chance to flex in their last 3 games as they play Washington, UCLA and Notre Dame. At a minimum they should finish 8-4.
#14 Computer Hope Penn St. dominated Iowa 41-14 to improve to 7-2 in what is becoming an historic season for the Nittany Lions. They should have no issues winning which at 10-2 would probably mean a New Year’s Bowl with a shot at 11-2 which would be incredible. You can’t say enough about Saquon Barkley running the ball, but Penn St.’s renaissance begins & ends with their defense. It has stiffened considerably & it’s playing with a swag we haven’t seen in some time. If the D keeps it up, they are not losing again.
#15 Computer Hope It wasn’t the prettiest game to watch, but Colorado battled hard to beat UCLA 20-10. The Buffaloes were down 10-7 at the half & played a terrible game, yet the defense came up big time after time to give Colorado an edge. Sometimes you have to win games like this to prove your metal and I think Colorado passed. The Bruins aren’t fantastic and Josh Rosen wasn’t playing but UC held UCLA to 25 yards rushing and dominated time of possession. Colorado has a significant coaching advantage with MacIntyre.
#16 Computer Hope Nothing helps better than getting a little Tennessee Tech on the schedule when you are feeling down! The Vols had no problems with TN Tech, hammering the Golden Eagles 55-0 in Neyland Stadium. With Florida losing to Arkansas and Kentucky losing to Georgia, the path to the SEC East title is still in Tennessee’s sights. Florida has to lose one more SEC game which seems likely with LSU on the schedule while UT has to beat Kentucky, Vandy & Mizzou. Their reward? A rematch against Alabama!
#17 Computer Hope I wrote that Virgina Tech was going to struggle with Duke in Durham and that is exactly what happened. The Hokies got out to a 21-7 halftime lead but the Blue Devils fought hard in the 2nd half to keep in close before eventually falling 24-21. I would have liked to have seen Tech handle the Duke rushing game a little better but this was a let down game for certain. It was the 2nd of 2 consecutive home games and Virginia Tech had played Miami-FL and Pittsburgh the two games prior. It happens.
#18 Computer Hope North Carolina could do absolutely nothing to stop Georgia Tech’s rushing attack, but the Yellow Jackets had no answer for Mitch Trubisky, Elijah Hood or Bug Howard as UNC cruised to a 48-20 victory over the Rambling Wreck! North Carolina took advantage of a couple of GT turnovers & turned them into 14 points which sealed the game in the 2nd half. The Heels still have a road game against Duke & their season finale at home against NC State so the finish won’t be easy although 10-2 is in sight.
#19 Computer Hope Nobody is going to argue that Arizona isn’t a bottom feeder Pac 12 school this year but Wazzou hammered them 69-7! That’s insane and it might end up costing Rich Rodriguez his job in Tucson! Luke Falk & Tyler Hilinski combined to go 47 of 52 (90.4%) for 474 yards & 6TD without an interception. That isn’t a typo. Those guys completed 90+% of their passes. Against an actual defense! WSU commits too many penalties & the D is suspect but note they are +10 in TO margin & 3-2 in close games.
#20 Computer Hope The Seminoles have lived on the edge a bit with their wins over Miami-FL, Wake Forest and now NC State, but they are 6-3 with losses to North Carolina, Clemson & Louisville. The problem with FSU is that they haven’t beaten anyone. I love the NC State win but the Wolfpack are 4-5 with 4 straight losses. The Week 1 win over Ole Miss looks average at best. With BC, Syracuse & Florida left, the Seminoles should get to 9-3 with a chance at 10 wins with the bowl. Florida St. is definitely poised for 2017!
#21 Computer Hope How about the play of RB Dimitri Flowers? Neither Joe Mixon or Samaje Perine didn’t run the ball against Iowa St., so Flowers stepped in and ran for 115 yards on 22 carries and also chipped in 3 catches for 34 yards and a TD! What a day for the Flowers family! The win over the Cyclones was OU’s 6th straight and they’ve ran their record to 7-2. West Virginia, Baylor & Oklahoma St. await so we’ll see how well the Sooners finish the season, but their 1-2 start could end up 11-2 and Big XII Champions.
#22 Computer Hope Big XII games are never dull that is for sure. The Cowboys needed two late 4th quarter TDs to overcome Kansas St. in Manhattan and keep their Big XII championship hopes alive. WR James Washington put up another HUGE game catching 7 balls for 117yds & 2TD. Washington is on pace to finish with 72 receptions for 1,407 yards & 12TD. He’s not getting nearly enough national media despite his biggest games coming against top opponents such as K-State, West Virginia & Pittsburgh. That’s 5 straight for OK-State.
#23 Computer Hope West Virginia rebounded nicely from the Oklahoma St. loss last week to hammer Kansas 48-21 in Morgantown. The Mountaineers were up 31-0 at the half and cruised from that point forward. The Big XII is pretty interesting coming down to the wire with WVU, Oklahoma & Oklahoma St., but the problem always remains that we don’t know how good these teams actually are. WVU’s best non-con win? BYU. Oklahoma St. best non-con win? Pitt. Oklahoma’s? UL-Monroe! To me that is why the Big XII falls off.
#24 Computer Hope Your sort of have to hope that Nebraska is more the team that took Wisconsin into OT in Madison than the team that just got OBLITERATED by Ohio St. 62-3! The other positive to take away from that is Ohio St. probably played the best football they’ve played this year & maybe the best they’ve played in the last two seasons! The bad news is that Nebraska just lost the Big 10 West unless Wisconsin loses at Purdue, but they are a road win over Iowa away from 10-2. A bowl win likely puts them in the top-12.
#25 Computer Hope That was a……BEATING! In Florida’s defense, they haven’t seen a team like Arkansas all season so the Razorback rushing offense had to be overwhelming. Losing 31-10 though? This isn’t your older brother’s Florida squad! I still like Florida’s defense, but the Gators have issues on offense. Luke Del Rio looked poor yet again and I’m not sure how much upside he really has for the rest of the season. Florida can still win the SEC East, but if they keep playing like this, I don’t see a way for them to beat a good LSU!
