NFL POWER 32 – 2017 WEEK 7

#1 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Bengals 29-14. The Killer Bs were at it again in a dominant Steelers victory over division rival Cincinnati. The scary thing about Pittsburgh is that the offense hasn’t quite clicked yet. The Steelers rank 17th in the league in scoring offense! Le’Veon Bell is on pace for 2,000+ total yards while Antonio Brown is on pace for 118 catches for 1750+ yards! The Steelers simply have to get the ball in the paint a bit more. The rush D could get a little better but that’s nit-picking to say the least.
#2 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Redskins 34-24. The Eagles took care of business at home by sweeping the Redskins who could be their biggest threat in the East, meaning the Eagles have no threat in the East. QB Carson Wentz threw for 268 yards & 4TD and has to be considered an MVP front runner. Wentz is on pace to throw for 4,234 yards with 39TD, which is on pace to lead the league. By the way, Wentz is in his 2nd year! The Eagles pass defense should get better as injured players come back. Close to being complete.
#3 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Falcons 23-7. The start wasn’t so hot, but New England has won 3 straight and are now 5-2 & in play for the #1 overall seed in the AFC. A lot of credit goes to Bill Belichick & Matt Patricia for fixing the defense. The Patriots were 2-2 in their first 4 games with a defense that allowed 32.0PPG. In their last 3 games, the Patriots have gone 3-0 and the D has given up 12.7PPG! That’s a HUGE turnaround. If New England’s defense continues this trend, they’ll be almost impossible to beat with their offense.
#4 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Raiders 30-31. The loss to the Steelers, OK, fine, it happens. Losing to the Raiders with your defense giving up 31 points? That’s iffy. The defense has been dreadful so far this season. The unit ranks 19th in scoring defense but it is buttressed by their +7 turnover margin. KC ranks 28th in pass defense & 25th in rush defense. They are -6 in sack differential as well. I know they are playing without Eric Berry, but you can’t lay it all on him being out of the lineup. They’re better than this.
#5 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Giants 24-7. This is the way the Seahawks need to win games. They held New York’s running game in check while Eli Manning was able to complete just 48.7% of his passes. Sure the G-Men didn’t turn the ball over, but Seattle stifled all pretense of a Giants offense. I liked this win as well because New York had to have renewed confidence after winning last week in Denver. This definitely could have been a game that Seattle was surprised in. Instead, the Seahawks dominated from the jump.
#6 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Cardinals 33-0. I think it’s safe to say that the Rams offense is for real. Jared Goff is on pace to pass for 3930 yards & 21TD which doesn’t seem fantastic, but he’s getting a ton of help from Todd Gurley who is on pace to rush for 1433 yards & have 2100+ total yards from scrimmage. The defense is also tightening up considerably. Over their last 3 games, the D has allowed only 11PPG. There really isn’t a weakness here. LA isn’t even getting lucky with close games or turnover margin. Impressive.
#7 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Packers 26-17. Over the last two weeks the Saints have beaten both the Lions and the Packers. In those two games Drew Brees is 47/68 (69.1%) for 517yds with 3TD & 4INT! Brees is averaging 250 passing yards a game in these two contests with a couple of picks and the Saints are still winning! Let that sink in for a bit! A big difference for the Saints is that they don’t allow any edge pressure on offense & they flat get after the other QB. They are also running very well. This is a Super Bowl team.
#8 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Colts 27-0. Granted it’s the Colts but doing this without Leonard Fournette and losing LT Cam Robinson at the beginning of the game makes this win even more impressive. Jacksonville completely took the fight out of Indianapolis, and the defense was STUNNING, sacking the Colts QBs ten times and getting an astonishing 21 QB hits! Even Blake Bortle was excellent throwing for 330 yards without an interception. If Fournette can stay healthy & Bortles limits mistakes, they’ll make noise.
#9 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Patriots 7-23. Losing to New England in Foxboro isn’t the end of the world and I’m not ready to give up on Atlanta just yet. The correct thing for the Falcons to do at this point is not get crazy. They didn’t play poorly against the Patriots. Essentially Atlanta couldn’t convert on 3rd down whereas they couldn’t stop New England from converting. It happens. They lost a couple of close games to Buffalo & Miami. Those teams are better than expected. There is still plenty of time for Atlanta to win.
#10 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Ravens 24-16. A solid win for the Vikings that could have been a lot more dominant had the Vikings scored in any of the 3 times they were in the red zone. Jerrick McKinnon had a big day rushing for 100+ yards while the Minnesota defense looked great holding the Ravens to not much on the ground & sacking Joe Flacco 5 times. The Minny D also caused Flacco to fumble 3x although the Ravens QB didn’t lose any of them. A 5-2 start isn’t so bad with Case Keenum starting 5 of those 7 games.
#11 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Bucs 30-27. Buffalo got a fantastic win over a Tampa Bay team that actually saw Jameis Winston play pretty well although he did have 1 pick. The Bucs turned the ball over 3x which was the difference in the game as the Bills were +2 in TO margin for the game. Keep in mind that Buffalo is now +10 in TO margin which leads the NFL. Buffalo held Tampa’s Doug Martin to 49 yards on 20 carries & Buffalo rush defense ranks 7th in the NFL. Create turnovers & stop the run. It’s a tremendous strategy that wins.
#12 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. No work for Detroit this weekend who remain steady at 3-3 and just a half game behind the Packers for 2nd place in the North. The Lions hopefully worked on their trench play during the bye week. They aren’t generating any pressure on opposing QBs while Matt Stafford is taking his share of hits. Detroit also needs to get their running game going. There is certain opportunity in the NFC North. Stafford is easily the best QB in the division right now and the Lions need to take advantage of that fact.
#13 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Eagles 24-34. Kirk Cousins isn’t being talked about all that much but the guy is on pace for 4300+ passing yards and 30+TD while completing 68.2% of his passes! If Washington had any kind of running game or pass defense, we might be talking about a 6-0 squad. The loss to Philly is nasty because that is the 2nd lost to the Eagles this season. On the other hand, this is a team capable of getting to 10 wins which might be enough to get into the playoffs. They need to beat Dallas this week.
#14 Computer Hope Last Week Beat 49ers 40-10. The 49ers had played very competitive football the five previous weeks, but Dallas cut through San Francisco like a hot knife through butter. Ezekiel Elliott ran for 147 yards & 2TD while also making a 72-yard TD catch! Dak Prescott threw for 3TDs himself as Dallas routed their long time rival. If this is the kind of Cowboys team we are going to see on a weekly basis then they’ll give the Eagles a run for their money at the division title & will certainly make a huge case for a Wild Card slot.
#15 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Broncos 21-0. Uh Oh. That’s three in a row for the Chargers who are now 3-4 and just 2 games behind the Chiefs for the division lead. Denver is an ELITE defensive team so it was great to see the Bolts post 21. It was also great to see them toss a shutout defensively. LA has to be careful at this point. Three of their next 4 games are road dates against New England, Dallas & Jacksonville. The 3-4 could turn into 4-7 rather quickly. They’ll need their pass rush to keep up its pace if they want to win.
#16 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. The Texans joined Detroit as the only two teams on bye this past week. Obviously the talk is about Deshaun Watson. In the rookie’s last 3 games he’s completed 62% of his passes for 769 yards & 12TD with only 2 picks. What’s also interesting about Watson is that he’s keeping the chains moving with his legs. Combine this with Lamar Miller & D’onta Foreman, and the Texans have a tremendous running attack that is somewhat overlooked. Solid defense & running the football equals wins.
#17 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Jets 31-28. The win over the Jets was nice but it came potentially at the cost of losing QB Jay Cutler. QB Matt Moore now gets a shot to win with the Dolphins. He led Miami to a victory last week after Cutler left the game with cracked ribs. He played pretty well going 13/21 for 188yds/2TD/1INT. With no Ryan Tannehill on the horizon, this is Matt Moore’s team and I’m interested to see what he can do with Adam Gase as HC. The win pushed the Phins to 4-2 & that defense is for real. Should be fun.
#18 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Browns 12-9. Weird game. Looks terrible on its face because it took Tennessee OT to beat a Browns team by the final score of 12-9? Cleveland actually isn’t a bad rush defense team which plays well against Tennessee who depends on the rushing ability of Demarco Murray & Derrick Henry. What is more troubling is that the game shifted to the back of Marcus Mariota and the Titans really couldn’t score through the air. That is troubling as it shows that Mariota can’t put this team on his back & win.
#19 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Chiefs 31-30. Putting 31 points on the Chiefs defense is no small feat. This is the Oakland offense we thought we’d see from the beginning of the season. Derek Carr threw for 400+ yards & 3TD while Amari Cooper finally decided to show up this season catching 11 balls for 210 yards & 2TD. The defense still gave up 30 points which is a problem for sure, but if the Raiders can keep up their offense, they won’t face many defenses as tough as Kansas City’s. That means a lot of point scored.
#20 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Panthers 17-3. Solid win by the Bears over a pretty good Panthers team. Mitch Trubisky has completed only 12 passes the last two weeks yet the Bears are 2-0 in those games. Against Carolina, Trubisky threw 7 passes total while Jordan Howard ran for 65 yards. If not for Eddie Jackson’s 2 defensive TDs, the Bears probably lose this game. What a day for the rookie from Alabama! I don’t think Chicago is a playoff contender, but I think this team could win 8 games which his huge.
#21 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Bears 3-17. Panthers fans don’t want to hear it, but they might have to accept the fact that Cam Newton is not a Super Bowl winning QB. The loss to Chicago was terrible. Three points? Newton went 21/34 for 211yds without a TD but did throw 2 interceptions. He also lost a fumble. Newton is on pace for 3,856 passing yards with 21TD and 23INT. He’s 10-11 in his last 21 regular season starts. His 2015 was fantastic, but that year looks like the outlier when you look at his career as a whole.
#22 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Chargers 0-21. Speaking of teams who played in that 2015 Super Bowl……Denver couldn’t get anything going on offense against the Chargers on Sunday which emphasizes their issues at the QB position. You start to wonder if the Broncos don’t quite get their strengths either. They didn’t have a ton of success running the football & they do have some options at QB, but they weren’t getting blown out. Trevor Siemian passed the ball 35 times compared to 19 rushing attempts. That’s backwards.
#23 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Saints 17-26. If the Packers can get Drew Brees to play that poorly and still wind up with a loss, then this team is done. That might not necessarily be a bad thing. The emergence of Aaron  Jones at tailback could portend to greater things to come next season when Aaron Rodgers returns because it finally gives the Packers a legit big play back who can take some the load off of Rodgers’ shoulders. Green Bay has been hit by injuries this season so maybe getting healthy should take priority.
#24 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Dolphins 28-31. Heartbreaking loss for the Jets who can argue they are THIS CLOSE to being 6-1 and leading the AFC despite their QB issues and relative youth on the defensive side of the football. New York had 14 points on turnovers and took a 28-14 lead into the 4th quarter but couldn’t close out the Dolphins in Miami. Despite the close losses, I think NY’s confidence has to be high. They aren’t playing particular well when you look at the stats, but they are staying competitive. Good story.
#25 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Steelers 14-29. Losing to the Steelers in Pittsburgh isn’t awful, but Joe Mixon is right. The Bengals go into halftime down 20-14 and yet in the 2nd half Mixon doesn’t get the ball at all. To me it’s a problem with the coaching which isn’t surprising given how disappointing Marvin Lewis is. The Bengals have some cornerstone players in AJ Green and Joe Mixon. It’s time to blow the offense up, fire the head coach & build around your two skill players. The Bengals are toast with Lewis as HC.
#26 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Bills 27-30. When Jameis Winston starts having good games and you still lose, you know you are in trouble. Tampa Bay can’t give up 30 points to the Bills. It’s that simple. The defense completely let the team down in this one and the Bucs look like a team headed for the basement of the NFC South although they might be able to count on Carolina to alleviate that humiliation. The Bucs had Kwon Alexander, Lavonte David & TJ Ward back in the lineup yet the Bills still ran all over them. Terrible.
#27 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Rams 0-33. A lot of talk about HC Bruce Arians trying to get out of Arizona and could you really blame him? He lost RB David Johnson before the season started and now Carson Palmer has a broken arm which means the Cardinals head into next week with Drew Stanton as QB and a washed up Adrian Peterson (who couldn’t replicate his 1st game with the Cardinals) at tailback. Even the 3-4 record is misleading. Arizona is 3-0 in close games meaning they are pretty darn close to being 0-7!!
#28 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Vikings 16-24. I would almost never think that the Ravens should look to get rid of John Harbaugh as their head coach, but in a game that was never out of reach, the Ravens had Joe Flacco throw the football 39 times while they ran the rock only 20. It’s a broken record to be sure & I feel like I’m beating this dead horse every week, but it seems as if Baltimore’s coaching staff simply doesn’t understand this reality and if that is the case then they don’t need to be running a franchise that can win.
#29 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Seahawks 7-24. More oddities with the offensive strategy. Last week RB Orleans Darkwa ran the ball 21 times for 117 years in New York’s win over Denver. This week Darkwa gets 9 carries while Eli Manning throws the ball 39 times in a game that was 10-7 Seahawks after 3 quarters. Did Ben McAdoo & Eli Manning forget they don’t have any viable receivers & were playing the Legion of Boom!? WHY IN THE WORLD ARE YOU THROWING THAT MUCH! Of course, McAdoo is on the hot seat.
#30 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Jaguars 0-27. You know you’ve reached rock bottom when there are now rumors of the Colts tanking the season, trying to get the #1 overall draft pick and trading Andrew Luck and completely rebuilding around a QB out of the 2018 NFL Draft! ONLY IN INDIANAPOLIS! Can you believe this is a franchise that was once led by both Peyton Manning & Tony Dungy? The Colts should probably rank #32 on this list, but they beat both the Browns & 49ers so they remain at #30. They stink!
#31 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Cowboys 10-40. So much for being competitive despite losing. The 49ers were BLOWN OUT at home by the Cowboys who put up 40 points while Ezekiel Elliott & Dak Prescott did whatever they wanted on offense. I’ll say this much about the 49ers. They are 0-5 in close games & -2 in TO margin. That stinks of regression so SF could be in for a win or two if luck swings the other way for them. They did get the Cardinals, Giants & Titans at home. The 49ers could get wins in those games. Maybe.
#32 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Titans 9-12. Whoa. What a dumpster fire at QB. The thought pervading the Brown is whether or not draft eligible QBs might actually stay in school instead of risking their being taken by the Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft! My answer to that is what’s the difference!? Does anyone really think Cleveland won’t be picking high again in the 2019 NFL Draft? Cleveland’s biggest problem was taking DeShone Kizer in the NFL Draft. They should have done what the Jets did & avoid the controversy.
