NCAA POWER 25 – 2017 WEEK 8

#1 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Tennessee 45-7. Methodical. That is what you’d call Alabama beat down of Tennessee on Saturday afternoon. The Tide rushed for 272 yards & 4TDs on 53 carries & dominated all phases of the game. The defense had 4 sacks, 9 tackles for loss, held the Vols to 108 total yards & only 7 first downs. UT was also 1 for 12 on 3rd down. Tennessee isn’t great but Alabama put up 604 total yards of offense and they are getting everyone involved. There’s Alabama & there is the rest of the country.
#2 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Michigan 42-13. WHOA! Saquon Barkley shredded that vaunted Michigan defense that was thought of as one of the best in the nation! Barkley ran for 108 yards, had 161 total yards & 3TDs! Michigan also had no answer for QB Trace McSorely who ran for 3TDs and passed for another. I think the Nittany Lions defense deserves a lot of credit too. They completely shut down Michigan’s running game & made life miserable for John O’Korn by sacking the QB 7 times! That’s crazy!
#3 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. Georgia had a week of rest but they got a huge boost from Notre Dame as the Irish took down a ranked USC team by 35 points on prime time television. That 20-19 win over the Irish in South Bend keeps looking better & better. The win for Notre Dame could be a harbinger of things to come. I’m not sure ND loses another game this year meaning that if Georgia goes 12-1 and loses to Alabama in the SEC Championship, they’d still be legit playoff contenders assuming ND is 11-1.
#4 Computer Hope Last Week Beat USC 49-14. I thought Notre Dame would win this game. I didn’t think they would take the Trojans to the woodshed and give them a spanking they won’t soon forget! USC had no answer for the Irish running attack which carried the rock for 377 yards & 5TDs while averaging 8.0ypc! Josh Adams ran for 191yds/3TD on just 19 carries. Adams is on pace for 1800yds/15TD & has to be considered a Heisman contender. QB Brandon Wimbush chipped in 100+ rushing yards himself!
#5 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Kansas 43-0. The most dominant performance of the day, TCU held Kansas to 21 total yards & -25 rushing yards. Kansas isn’t great but the demolishing of the Jayhawks was nothing short of incredible. QB Kenny Hill threw for 278yds/5TD while the Horned Frogs rushing attack gained 191 yards. The defense didn’t come up with a turnover but had 4 sacks & 11 tackles for loss. TCU is playing outstanding football at the moment, but next week they head to Ames for a date with Iowa St.
#6 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Maryland 38-13. Same week same story for the Badgers who got solid play from their defense while the offense maintained the storyline of Jonathan Taylor running like a man possessed while QB Alex Hornibrook and TE Troy Fumagalli looked like All-Big 10 performers. The Badgers don’t play Penn St. or Ohio St. and get Michigan in Madison which doesn’t look bad given what the Wolverines did against Penn State. There is a pretty clear path to a 12-0 season here.
#7 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. Clemson had an off week this week but it wasn’t a banner week for them because Syracuse got beat by Miami-FL and Georgia Tech took it to Wake Forest. Louisville did beat Florida St. which makes the Tigers look a little better & that Auburn win looks pretty good, but the ACC seems off this season with Louisville & Florida State not being factors. Clemson has a tricky home game this week against Georgia Tech that if nothing else will test their physical ability to heal.
#8 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Kansas St. 42-35. If it wasn’t for such a convincing win over Ohio State, I’m not sure where I’d rank the Sooners who barely got by a Kansas St. team who didn’t have their starting QB. Baker Mayfield had a great game & RB Rodney Anderson played well as he ran for 147 yards but this Sooners defense is suspect and the team is playing down to their competition. The Sooners still have games against TCU, Oklahoma St. & West Virginia on tap. They need to get a lot better before them.
#9 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. How bad does Ohio St. wish they could get back that early season loss to Oklahoma? If the Buckeyes had taken care of business at home against the Sooners, they would have to be ranked inside the top-4 along with Alabama, Penn St. and Georgia. Most likely the Buckeyes would be sitting at #2 and we’d be dreaming of Urban Meyer v. Nick Saban national championship. Next Saturday means everything as the Buckeyes will host Penn St.! It should decide the Big 10.
#10 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. The Huskies were on a bye last week after losing to Arizona State the previous week. The good news is that the Sun Devils put a whooping on Utah this past week 30-10 which gives some rise to the idea that ASU could win out and finish 9-3 which would make them Pac 12 South champions. That could set up a rematch for the Huskies allowing them to avenge their only loss of the season assuming UW finishes 11-1. I’m guessing the Huskies take care of business from this point on.
#11 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. I’m sure the Wolfpack had their guys glued to the television last night as Notre Dame absolutely thrashed USC. NC State’s road trip to South Bend doesn’t look nearly as fun, but this should be an amazing game because you can argue that NC State has the best D-Line in the country while Notre Dame might have the best O-Line. The game cuts both ways. NC State could lose, finish 10-2 & not be a playoff contender. To get into the playoffs, then NC State is in must win mode, as are the Irish.
#12 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Syracuse 27-19. Syracuse QB Eric Dungey carved up the Clemson defense a week ago in the Orange’s shocking win over the defending national champions. Mark Richt made sure  the Hurricanes wouldn’t make the same mistake & THE U delivered, holding Dungey to 13/41 passing for 137 yards which included 4 interceptions! Miami-FL didn’t care a lick about Syracuse’s rushing attack & wasn’t overly great on offense themselves, but Dungey didn’t beat them & that meant a win.
#13 Computer Hope Last Week Beat North Carolina 59-7. There is part of me that thinks this ranking is too low for a Hokies team that is playing out of their minds on defense combined with a committed running attack that dominates time of possession. But it’s tricky because Virginia Tech hasn’t played that many teams outside of Clemson where they lost. Sure the Boston College win looks OK with BC beating L’Ville & Virginia. The WVU win is OK but WVU barely got by Baylor. VT still has to beat somebody.
#14 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Texas 13-10. The Cowboys didn’t exactly show their vaunted offense, but I was able to watch this game and the offense looked much better than the final scored indicated. This game was weird because Texas took the game to OT but if you were watching it live, it seemed as if the Cowboys should have been up 35-3 for most of the game. Justice Hill is a BEAST! He’s a one cut back that gets north-south FAST. James Washington is going to be a star. The defense was outstanding.
#15 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Indiana 17-9. Beating Michigan & Indiana is no small feat to be completely honest. Sure the Hoosiers are 3-4 and Michigan looked pretty awful against Penn State, but the Spartans have showed tremendous toughness over the last 4 weeks as they’ve beaten Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota & Indiana. That’s a tough stretch of games to finish 4-0! Penn St. & Ohio St. remain, but Michigan St. could finish the year 9-3 with a potential 10th win. They were supposed to be rebuilding!
#16 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Notre Dame 14-49. OUCH! The Trojans went into South Bend and took a hammering. Being -3 in TO margin wasn’t the best strategy, but while a lot of people will point to USC turning the ball over, the real culprit was USC not having any answers for Notre Dame’s rushing attack. On the other side, ND didn’t allow USC to get their running game, which showed the Trojans getting destroyed in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Maybe Sam Darnold needs to come back for 2018?
#17 Computer Hope Last Week BYE. The Cardinal were a bye this past week but were not helped at all by USC getting trounced by Notre Dame. Stanford’s two losses came to San Diego St. and USC and those losses keep looking worse. The Cardinal will certainly have the opportunity to beat the Irish themselves when they host Notre Dame on November 25th, but they’ll have Washington, Washington St. and California before taking on ND. Frankly I’d have Stanford higher than #17 but I can’t put them past USC just yet.
#18 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Colorado 28-0. Luke Falk threw for 3TDs and the running game looked good, but what is amazing about Wazzou’s win this past weekend was the shutout the defense had! This is a Mike Leach team for crying out loud! They have a reputation to uphold. The USC win doesn’t look so great now & Colorado isn’t the same team they were last year, but 28-0 is still amazing considering. You can be sure the Cougars wish they could get that California loss back. They can still win the North.
#19 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Mississippi 40-24. That is the Derrius Guice we have all been waiting for! For the first time all season Guice looked healthy & he ran for 276 yards on 22 carries against Ole Miss! That isn’t a typo! Guice ran for 276 freakin’ yards! DE Arden Key looked 100% healthy as well. This is a different LSU team if their two best players are at 100%. I still don’t think they can win in Tuscaloosa, but finishing 10-3 in Ed Orgeron’s first year would have to considered a pretty big success.
#20 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Arkansas 52-20. Auburn was back to looking like Auburn this week beating Arkansas behind a fantastic running attack that we’ve come to expect from War Eagle. The win must might cost Arkansas HC Bret Bielema his job at season’s end. Auburn has lost to Clemson by 8 points & LSU by 4 points with both losses coming on the road. Things could be a lot worse. Even losing to Alabama to end the season could still mean the Tigers finish 10-3 which is a tremendous season.
#21 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Penn St. 13-42. It’s pretty weird to see Michigan get dominated like that with Jim Harbaugh at the helm. Michigan’s loss seems to indicate that the Wolverines will probably lose to Ohio State as well meaning the fighting Harbaughs will have lost to Penn St., Michigan St. and Ohio St. all in the same season! EEK! It’s weird to see Florida & Michigan struggle this year with their QB position. I think it is somewhat odd that two blue bloods can’t get a 5-star QB to come in and win.
#22 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Tulane 34-28. The Bulls sort of flipped the script on Tulane by beating the Green Wave at their own game. Darius Tice ran for 141 yards. Quinton Flowers ran for 138, and D’Ernest Johnson ran for 84 as the Bulls racked up 378 rushing yards on the day. Don’t mistake this for an easy game. Tulane under Willie Fritz is playing a lot better with their spread option attack. Tulane ran for 194 yards themselves but had no defensive counter to USF. This was a solid win for USF.
#23 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Navy 31-21. I wasn’t sure the Knights could take on Navy in Annapolis, but UCF dominated on the ground behind Adrian Killins & Otis Anderson while the defense played big limiting Navy’s big run plays and forcing the Middies into 3 turnovers. UCF did give up a big play to Navy WR Malcolm Perry on a 75-yard TD play, but for the most part UCF controlled the game & escaped with a 10 point conference road win against a very physically tough opponent. They’re tough.
#24 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Baylor 38-36. I love Dana Holgorsen and I think college football is so much better when West Virginia is relevant, but how can WVU QB Will Grier go 26/37 (70.3%) for 375 yards & 5TD without throwing an interception against Baylor & the Mountaineers still only manage to win the game by 2 points? Of course the defense! WVU didn’t force any turnovers & gave up 400+ yards of offense. I’d love to see WVU win out, but wow they need to get the defense playing just a bit!
#25 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Wake Forest 38-24. Georgia Tech was impressive against a decent Wake Forest team, beating the Demon Deacons by 14 points while completely DOMINATING Wake with their running attack. Georgia Tech has lost 2 games by a combined 2 points. You know they wish they had that game against Tennessee back and they were THIS close to beating Miami-FL. Beat Clemson this week and we can start talking about ways in which the Jackets can win the Coastal division.

#25 IOWA HAWKEYES: Lose to Northwestern 17-10 in OT? How Iowa of them!? The Hawkeyes have lost 3 games this year by a combined 16 points. Two of their 3 losses have come by a 17-10 final score! They really should have beaten Penn State. What do you make of a team like this? Iowa still has games against Ohio St. (home), Wisconsin (road) and Nebraska (road) so it’s possible that this squad finishes the season 6-6 assuming they beat Minnesota & Purdue. It’s amazing to think that a team this good could barely become bowl eligible with the potential to finish the year 6-7. It doesn’t make any sense. Given how poor Nebraska has been in recent years, you almost wonder if Iowa isn’t missing an tremendous opportunity to dominate the Big 10 West. Yes, Wisconsin is a factor as well, but it’s not like the Badgers are dominating recruiting with tons of 4 and 5 star players. I love Iowa as a program, but man it doesn’t make any sense at times. It’s a physically tough football team that can’t quite take that next step to the ELITE level. But then again, that has always been Iowa.
