NCAA POWER 25 – 2017 WEEK 4

#1 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Vanderbilt 59-0. Well…..Vanderbilt looked pretty darn good up to this point. Talk about vintage Alabama football. The Crimson Tide ran the ball 66 times for 496 yards & 6TD! When Alabama is running the ball like this they are unbeatable. Nobody gets close to them. Period. They are a team that absolutely imposes their will on other squads & if you can’t beat them in the trenches then you can’t beat them at all. Bama outgained Vandy 677 yards to 78!
#2 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Boston College 34-7. The final score said “BLOWOUT” but can you believe this game was tied 7-7 after 3 quarters? The Tigers couldn’t really get anything going offensively for the first half and then opened the 2nd half with a pick. They got things going with some chunk plays in the 4th & opened up offensively with some big plays. You sort of felt a letdown was coming here. Clemson was coming off wins against Auburn & Louisville. Solid win for the champs!
#3 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Baylor 49-41. Hmmm, a couple of thoughts here. The first thought is that the Sooners did a pretty darn good job taking the heat off of Baker Mayfield and relied a bit on the running game. Abdul Adams ran for 164 yards while while Trey Sermon ran for 148 yards as OU totaled 342 rushing yards. On the other hand, Oklahoma gave up 41 points to Baylor who came in 0-3 & was beaten by Liberty earlier in the year. Where in the world was the defense!?!?
#4 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Mississippi St. 31-3. I think it might be safe to say that Jacob Eason isn’t starting anymore for the Georgia Bulldogs. QB Jake Fromm didn’t throw a ton but he went 9 for 12 for 201yds/2TD without making any mistakes. If he does that every game  leans on his runners, Georgia might not lose. I don’t know if it’s necessarily underrated, but Georgia’s defense is a NASTY unit. It’s incredibly fast & athletic. Not quite Alabama, but it’s not that far off either. Scary!
#5 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Oklahoma St. 44-31. Give credit to Gary Patterson. His game plan against Oklahoma St. was outstanding limiting the Cowboys opportunity to have the ball. TCU dominated time of possession 39 minutes to 21. Oklahoma St. actually scored more points per minute than the Horned Frogs, but TCU never allowed Oklahoma St. to have the football. It might seem like 31 points is a lot, but TCU’s defense is for real. This is the 2nd best team in the Big 12.
#6 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Iowa 21-19. 80 yards in under 2 minutes to beat a feisty Iowa team in Iowa City! Saquon Barkley set a Penn St. record for total yards by rushing for a RIDICULOUS 211 yards but he also had 94 receiving yards & 53 return yards. As good as Barkley was, it was QB Trace McSorley who threw a froze rope through the eye of a needle with 4 seconds left in the game to win the game. At some point you simply can’t bet against McSorley in close games. I’m not.
#7 Computer Hope Last Week Beat California 30-20. The Trojans were outgained in total yards by 60, but thanks to 6 turnovers by the Bears, the Trojans were able to escape Berkeley with a 10-point win. Give credit to the Trojans defense for forcing those turnovers, but USC was playing without RB Ronald Jones & DE Porter Gustin, two HUGE components to their team. QB Sam Darnold’s stats aren’t overwhelming but WOW does he deal with dropped passes! Cal’s no joke. This was a solid win.
#8 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Purdue 28-10. Michigan got a tough break with QB Wilton Speight having to leave the game in the first quarter to never return, but John O’Korn played pretty well & Michigan wore down the Boilermakers in a TOUGH game in West Lafayette. Like Clemson, Michigan had a tough time getting anything going offensively, but the Wolverines outscored Purdue 21-0 in the 2nd half. Defensively, Michigan was dominant holding Purdue to 189 total yards. Nice!
#9 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Colorado 37-10. Colorado is better than you think even if they are a bit young, but Washington didn’t have the best game. Jake Browning was a little off and I still think the Huskies are missing John Ross just as I’m not sure Dante Pettis can take the top off a defense. Myles Gaskin ran for 202 yards which alleviated a lot of the offensive problems. UW’s defense showed out pretty well stopping CU’s running attack & causing 3 turnovers. To be determined.
#10 Computer Hope Last Week No Game, Bye. No game this weekend but some developments the past couple of weeks would seemingly work in Wisconsin’s favor. A couple of weeks ago Northwestern got waxed by Duke down in Durham. No question the Blue Devils are playing well & are tougher than people expect, but I don’t think Duke is close to Wisconsin. This past week Nebraska fired their AD & the program seems wrecked. The path the Big 10 West seems easier than ever this season.
#11 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Missouri 51-14. Missouri is terrible so going into Columbia and spanking the Panthers by 37 isn’t overly fantastic. I mean, Purdue just hammered Missouri last week, but it was another convincing win for War Eagle. The Auburn defense turned Mizzou over 4 times & the runners ran well with Kam Martin leading the way with 74 yards but the star being Kerryon Johnson who ran for 5 TDs!!! The Clemson loss is acceptable & Auburn is still a playoff hopeful.
#12 Computer Hope Last Week Beat UNLV 54-21. Not to hammer away at Ohio State again, but at this point there is absolutely nothing to be learned from the Buckeyes beating on UNLV just like there was nothing to be learned last week when Ohio St. beat Army. Their first test came against Oklahoma & they failed miserably. Their next test will probably come when they host Penn State. JT Barrett had a fantastic game going 12/17 with 5TD passes, but he tends to do that against lesser teams.
#13 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Old Dominion 38-0. ODU isn’t fantastic but the Hokies played exceptionally well in all phases of the game & they might be a team hiding in the woods for a potential ACC title. QB Josh Evans threw for 300 yards & 3TD while VT ran the ball for 271 yards. The Hokies defense held the Monarchs to 149 total yards & just 7 first downs. VT outgained ODU 582-149. The Hokies are a playoff contender. Beat Clemson next week & they’ll be talking national title.
#14 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Michigan St. 38-18. If Notre Dame plays to win when they were up against Georgia instead of playing not to lose, they are 4-0 right now and in the top-10. Instead they are 3-1 and almost a puzzle. I don’t think Michigan St. is a good squad, but even so, Notre Dame ran the Spartans over & Michigan St. always gives the Irish fits. The Irish have some landmines to avoid, but Brandon Wimbush is gaining confidence & an 11-1 season is a possibility.
#15 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Toledo 52-30. Like Florida St., this was Miami’s first game in 3 weeks and the rust showed as the Canes were down 16-10 at halftime & only led 24-16 after 3 quarters. The Canes finally wore Toledo down and won by 22. Toledo is an outstanding MAC squad & QB Logan Woodside can sling it a bit as the Rockets QB passed for 342yds/3TD. Mark Walton had a huge game for THE U rushing for 204 yards. Miami had over 500 total yards of offense & 7TDs. Not bad!
#16 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Kent St. 42-3. It’s pretty wild to think QB Lamar Jackson had an off game and he “only” threw the ball for 299 yards & 2TD while rushing for 34 yards & another TD. The Cardinals didn’t have any trouble with Kent St. holding the Flashes to 150 total yards. Louisville turned the ball over 4 times and only had the ball for 23 minutes so they were a bit sloppy. With Florida St. ailing, Louisville has a chance to finish 11-1 with a potential 12-1 season. That’s crazy!
#17 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Nevada 45-7. This was never a game as the Cougars were up 35-0 at half time. Luke Falk carved up the Nevada defense for 478 yards & 5TD to push the Cougars to a 4-0 record. We’ll know for real how good Wazzou is next week when they host Southern Cal, but so far they’ve avoided the early season pitfalls of past seasons. The Boise St. win doesn’t look nearly as good as it did now that the Broncos lost to Virginia who was destroyed by Indiana. We’ll see.
#18 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Florida St. 27-21. How bad does the South Carolina loss back in Week 1 hurt now? NC State’s D-Line was nasty in beating Florida St., but to be honest they had quite a bit of help from FSU starting a true freshman QB making his first start along with the Seminoles looking a bit rusty on defense. You can’t take away NC State going into Doak Walker and getting a win though. A top-20 team? Absolutely. A championship level squad? Doesn’t seem like it.
#19 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to TCU 31-44. TCU has a solid team and Gary Patterson is one of the best. Oklahoma St. had to know coming in that they’d need to adjust a bit given how TCU would attack them and the Cowboys ended up with 4 turnovers and that simply can’t happen. The Cowboys didn’t really get anything going on the ground & they were a bit sloppy with penalties as well. Oklahoma St. is a good team, but they can’t deviate from their game plan and beat very good teams.
#20 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to NC State 21-27. The rust showed at Doak Campbell as the Seminoles came up 6 points shy in their first game in 3 weeks. I’m not going to discount FSU. NC State is a very good football team with a fantastic D-Line and it was OBVIOUS Florida St. was the much more talented and much faster team on the football field. The defense missed some tackles & true frosh QB James Blackman was a freshman. The last time FSU started 0-2, they finished 10-2 in 1989.
#21 Computer Hope Last Week Lost to Georgia 3-31. Speechless. Last week the Bulldogs beat LSU 37-7 and this week they lose to Georgia 31-3!? I’m not ready to sell out on Mississippi St. just yet, but the SEC is a mess. South Carolina beat NC State who just beat Florida State. Kentucky beat S.Carolina but just lost to Florida. Georgia just throttled Hail State who destroyed LSU. How good is anyone? Dan Mullen is an outstanding coach & I really like Nick Fitzgerald & Aeris Williams. A blip maybe?
#22 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Kentucky 28-27. I’m keeping Florida in the Top-25 because when you look at this team in their uniforms, they look like one of the best teams in college football. Then they start playing. They lost to a Michigan team that had a hard time with Purdue. They needed a Hail Mary to beat a Tennessee squad that had trouble with UMass. The Kentucky win seems big until you realize it’s….KENTUCKY! The SEC is a mess so how do you rank any of these teams.
#23 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Kansas 56-34. The Mountaineers have scored 50+ points in each of the past 3 weeks. They’ve won all 3 games by an average score of 57-23. Will Grier has been fantastic in Morgantown after transferring from Florida. RB Justin Crawford has been All-American quality in the running game & Kennedy McKoy is starting to give WVU a 2nd option at tailback. The defense isn’t the best but Dana Holgorsen is a great coach & WVU can score with anybody in the country.
#24 Computer Hope Last Week Beat Temple 43-7. The Bulls beat Temple by 36 points. Notre Dame beat Temple by 33. The Irish should have beaten Georgia two weeks ago and I think the Bulldogs are a top-5 team at this point. Where does that leave South Florida? Having them at #23 is probably too low, but they are a real threat to finish 13-0. The win against Temple is especially nice because Quinton Flowers was off. South Florida’s defense was straight FILTHY against the Owls. They are for real.
#25 Computer Hope Last Week Beat San Diego St. 28-24. The Aztecs avoided a huge let down against Air Force after having a fantastic win over Stanford the previous week. Rashaad Penny is the best RB nobody is talking about. So far this season Penny has rushed for 716 yards & 7TD in 4 games. Air Force is a tough game to play with their offensive scheme, but the Aztecs played tough & got a tough win. San Diego St. should battle South Florida as a non-Power 5 team that can go undefeated.

#18 LSU TIGERS: Turns out BYU stinks so that win didn’t mean much. LSU got hammered by Mississippi St. who got hammered by Georgia. They then struggled at home against Syracuse, one of the worst teams in the ACC. What to make of LSU? Their QB play is mediocre at bets and Derrius Guice isn’t dominating. Arden Key is barely playing. Can Ed Orgeron’s seat be getting warm after only 4 games with his team 3-1? The coaching staff is fantastic and LSU should be better than they have been.

#19 OREGON DUCKS: The win over Nebraska doesn’t mean too much now that the Cornhuskers program seems in complete disarray. Then the Ducks go out and lose to Arizona State. Losing to Arizona St. in Tuscon isn’t awful, but Oregon’s defense didn’t flash at all in giving up 37 points to the Sun Devils. Oregon going 1 for 11 on 3rd down certainly didn’t help but the defense allowed Arizona St. to go 8 of 20 on 3rd down. Arizona St. also dominated time of possession 38 minutes to 22. Not a good showing for the Ducks although they played well offensively. Tough game.

#23 MARYLAND TERRAPINS: The win over Texas seems like a lifetime ago and this week Maryland gets absolutely hammered by Central Florida. Not having Tyrrell Pigrome at QB has been unfortunate for Maryland. The quicker they get him back the better they’ll be until that happens, Maryland’s expectation should probably revert back to what we thought they’d be before the season began. That’s unfortunate because the team that played Texas was exciting.

#25 KENTUCKY WILDCATS: The loss to Florida has to be heartbreaking for Kentucky after they’ve seen how terrible Tennessee has been. Beat Florida in Lexington and the Wildcats had a shot to win the SEC East with a road win over Georgia. If things had gone to plan, Kentucky could have been 10-0 when they went to Athens. The SEC East is still on the line assuming Florida can lose some games, but what a tough loss at home. As it stands you have to start wondering what UK has done. The South Carolina win now doesn’t look as good with the Gamecocks barely beating Louisiana Tech this week. Their next two games are against Eastern Kentucky & Missouri. The next test will be 3 weeks from now with a trip to Starkville.
