NFL POWER 32 – 2016 WEEK 13

#1 Computer Hope Dallas won their 11th straight game beating the Vikings in Minnesota 17-15. With 4 games to play the Cowboys have all but locked up the #1 seed in the NFC. The game against the Vikings was a good illustration of a team’s need to play perfect to beat Dallas. It’s also illustrative of what a well coached team the Cowboys are. I had my doubts about Jason Garrett early on as a Cowboys fanatic, but he’s proving worthy of the job. Dallas won’t be out-coached when they get to the postseason.
#2 Computer Hope The Patriots had absolutely no problems with the Rams in a 26-10 win that was worse than the final score. More and more the Pats look like a defensive first team. The defense put on a show holding LA to 7 first downs, 162 total yards, forcing 2 turnovers and holding the Rams to 1 of 12 on 3rd down. New England isn’t out of the woods yet. Oakland is going to put up a fight and if you can be sure that the Raiders certainly remember a few things about New England & want pay back.
#3 Computer Hope Oakland has been winning games all season but the 38-24 win over Buffalo Sunday solidified their status in my mind as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. The Raiders were down 24-9 midway through the 3rd quarter before scoring 28 unanswered points to finish the game. Derek Carr took the game over & the Raiders defense forced the issue with turnovers. Oakland needs momentum as their final quarter of games might be the most difficult in all of professional football.
#4 Computer Hope How do the Seahawks score 5 points on Tampa Bay a week ago and then explode for 40 points on Carolina this week? A big part of their success is the running game. Thomas Rawls ran for over 100 yards & the Hawks got a big play from Tyler Lockett who ran a TD in from 75 yards out. I still think the loss of CJ Prosise could be critically fatal for Seattle, but if Rawls can fill the void, Seattle should be a very real player for the NFC Championship. That’s a big if though so we’ll have to see.
#5 Computer Hope Eric Berry returning a Matt Ryan interception for a TD on a 2-pt conversion seems so Kansas City this season! At the end of the day Kansas City keeps winning football games. They are 7-1 in their last 8 games and have won 2 back-to-back road games against Denver & Atlanta that they probably should have lost. The Chiefs now get 3-straight home games which could potentially take them to 12-3 leading into their season finale at San Diego. I think “team of destiny” is creeping in.
#6 Computer Hope Is the glass half full or half empty? With Detroit it’s hard to tell. On the one hand Matthew Stafford is playing like an MVP candidate and the Lions have had plenty of chances to fold the last couple of weeks yet have kept winning. They are 7-1 in their last 8 games and the defense is allowing 16.3PPG over their last 6 games. On the other hand, the Lions have beaten the Redskins, Eagles, Saints, Vikings (twice), Rams and Jaguars to get to 8-4. Winning is winning though. I like them.
#7 Computer Hope Pittsburgh beat the Giants 24-14 in the Meadowlands to give the Steelers their 3rd straight win and keep them tied with the Ravens atop the AFC North. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Le’Veon Bell has turned back into Le’Veon Bell the last 3 weeks rushing for 384 yards & 2TD while averaging 4.8ypc. He’s also caught 18 balls. Roethlisberger & Antonio Brown have also brought their games up and the Steelers offense is starting look like the offense that could win a Super Bowl.
#8 Computer Hope The Giants were due to lose a game and it’s not like the Steelers are a cupcake AFC squad. I don’t want to get too bent out of shape here as the Giants are still 8-4 with the 3rd best record in the NFC. The loss to Pittsburgh does hurt them just a bit as it relates to them winning the NFC East as they are now 3 back with 4 to play. Losing Jason Pierre-Paul to hernia surgery is the bigger news. JPP is an integral part of a very good Giants defense and his presence will surely be missed.
#9 Computer Hope Sure the Broncos beat the Jaguars 20-10 and improved to 8-4 which would put them back into the playoffs had the season ended today, but the offense was DREADFUL against Jacksonville which has to be alarming. Paxton Lynch was terrible. The running game couldn’t get anything going and the Broncos were 1/12 on 3rd down! One of Denver’s scores came on a Bradley Roby pick-6. Denver has QB issues in the worst way & this could lose them to losing their final 4 games.
#10 Computer Hope A 28-21 come from behind road win against the Chargers is HUGE for Tampa Bay. Forget that it pulls them even with the Falcons, this was an enormous confidence boosting game in my opinion. The Bucs have now won 4 straight games and are 6-2 in their last 8. In those eight games, Jameis Winston is completing 64% of his passes with 15TD to 4INT. He’s coming along faster than even I anticipated. The defense needs to tighten up a bit, but the Bucs have shown they can play.
#11 Computer Hope The 2-point conversion picked off and returned for 2 is just as much Atlanta as it is Kansas City. The Chiefs are finding odd ways to win in 2016 while the Falcons are finding odd ways to lose. I still really like the Falcons but the losses are mounting. Atlanta is actually 3-4 in their last 7 even those 4 losses have come by a combined 15 points! The schedule sets up well for the Falcons to win out which should secure the division but oddball losses have found a way to find them.
#12 Computer Hope The Packers scored their 2nd straight win with a 21-13 win over the Texans to move to 6-6 and tied with Minnesota. If the season ended today, Green Bay would be the #9 seed in the NFC, but that probably isn’t as bad as it sounds. They can jump the Vikings with a win over Minnesota which leaves only the Redskins & Bucs. They lost the head to head with the Redskins so they need an outright better record. Tampa & Detroit are going to be more difficult. Relaxing time is certainly over.
#13 Computer Hope The loss to Arizona stinks but not all is lost with the Redskins. The last time Washington lost 2 straight games, they followed it with 4 straight wins. If the Skins can repeat that feat then Washington is looking at a final record of 10-5-1. That’ll be good enough to get into the playoffs. They get the Eagles, Panthers, Bears & Giants to finish the season with New York & Carolina at home. I think the Redskins get it done although the formula to beat them is out there & is a solid plan.
#14 Computer Hope Maybe it’s time to give the Ravens some respect. Miami was certainly due to lose a game & that seemed probably going into Baltimore to play the Ravens, but 38-6!? That was a BEATING and an offensive explosion I wasn’t expecting. I think the Ravens are more difficult to handle of Terrance West & Kenneth Dixon keep running well. That opens up the passing game in spades & the Ravens certainly have some weapons on the outside. Their final four games are nasty!
#15 Computer Hope The Colts keep doing what inconsistent teams do. Beat the Chargers then lose to the Jaguars. Beat the Titans and then get hammered by the Steelers. The Jets given New England all they can handle a week ago and then the Colts treat them like a bottom feeder in their own home stadium, beating the New Yorkers 41-10! Don’t be surprised if Indy loses at home this week to Houston! It’s how the season has panned out. In the South it’s hard not to like the Colts because of Andrew Luck.
#16 Computer Hope I’m not going to bag on the Dolphins for losing a road game to Baltimore after having won 6 straight games, but I’m somewhat concerned about the score differential at 38-6. That seems shocking to me. The next two weeks are critical for Miami because we’ll see how they respond to getting punched in the gut. This week it’s a home game against Arizona followed by a road trip to the Jets. Those are winnable games for a team with playoff aspirations knowing the pressure is on.
#17 Computer Hope It’s over. The Bills needed to beat Oakland and almost had them but came up just a bit short. The loss put Buffalo back to 6-6 and if the season ended today they’d be the #10 seed in the AFC. They aren’t out of it I suppose because they are just 2 games behind Denver for the final wild card spot, but with only 4 games left I’m not sure it’s enough time. The Bills get three straight home games followed by a season finale against the Jets in New York. All they can do is win out & hope.
#18 Computer Hope It’s really over. The loss to Tampa put the Chargers at 5-7 and while I think they can win out and get to 9-7, I’m not sure that would be enough to capture a wild card spot. I think 10 wins gets you into the playoffs and that can’t happen. All I can think of now is that I hope the Chargers stay in San Diego and I hope Mike McCoy can survive as head coach. The Chargers are SO MUCH closer than anyone thinks. Every playoff team in the AFC is sighing in relief that San Diego is out.
#19 Computer Hope Can the Bengals still make the playoffs? It’s certainly possible but one game in particular will sway the results. The Bengals have to win out, but the blow out win over Philadelphia followed by a game against Cleveland could be the spark that ignites the fire. The schedule could work out too with Baltimore & Pittsburgh, but for Cincinnati to even have a remote chance, Baltimore has to beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh in Week 16. Philly beating Baltimore almost guarantees Cincy!
#20 Computer Hope It was a good week for Tennessee despite being on a bye. The Titans held at 6-6 while the Texans lost to Green Bay which forced Tennessee into a 3-way tie for first place in the South because Indianapolis also beat the Jets. If Tennessee wins out they win the South, but they have a road game against Kansas City which means at best they go 9-7. What worse for Tennessee is they are 0-2 against Indianapolis and most likely will have the worst division record among the three.
#21 Computer Hope The Saints really couldn’t afford to lose at all, but they especially couldn’t afford to lose a home game to the Lions. The loss to Detroit dropped New Orleans to 5-7, 2 games behind both Atlanta & Tampa Bay for the division lead. I don’t think the Saints can get a wild card berth so it’s NFC South or bust. In their final 4 games, three of them are on the road. Even if the Saints go 3-1 to finish the season, they’ll only end up 8-8. That isn’t enough. Another wasted year for Drew Brees.
#22 Computer Hope I still think the Cardinals aren’t utilizing David Johnson properly but they did get him the ball 27 times and he accounted for 175 yards & 2TD. I get what Arizona is doing. They dink and donk their way down the field with Johnson running the ball and then Johnson & Fitzgerald catching short passes, but it’s problematic as well. Arizona has no vertical game & when they don’t get Johnson the ball, the Arizona defense spends too much time on the field. A very unusual year here.
#23 Computer Hope Holding the Dallas Cowboys offense to 17 points is winning, but it wasn’t enough as the Cowboys keep proving only a perfect game is enough to derails the Dallas Express. Minnesota’s defense was SALTY all night long keeping Dak Prescott & Ezekiel Elliott in check, but the Vikings offense couldn’t get the offense going. New is that Adrian Peterson might not come back if Minnesota isn’t in the hunt when he’s ready. That’s a kick in the nuts to an offense that was already castrated.
#24 Computer Hope Another week another loss for the Eagles who are now 2-7 in their last 9 games. Carson Wentz had a brutal game throwing 3 picks, but I think it’s a bit unfair for HC Doug Pederson to ask the rookie to throw 60 passes. On the other hand, what else does Philly have on offense? More alarming is the play of the defense. Over their last 6 games, the Eagles are giving up 26.2PPG! Philly plays 4 potential playoff teams in their final four games. I think they are looking at 5-11/6-10 to finish.
#25 Computer Hope The Texans look downright awful, but let’s face it, the Texans are 3-0 against the AFC South and they get each one of those teams in their final 4. If they can run the table against the South & finish 6-0 within the division then Houston wins it. And even if that doesn’t happen, what are the expectations to be honest with Houston? Osweiler is a disaster. JJ Watt has missed the season. Lamar Miller is banged up. A lot of the rookie wideouts are banged up. The playoffs would miraculous.
#26 Computer Hope Losing 40-7 to Seattle was humiliating enough but even more troublesome is that Cam Newton was benched at the beginning of the game for apparent disciplinary issues. That is absolutely unacceptable for a QB who believes he’s a franchise guy. Can you imagine Tom Brady or Peyton Manning being disciplined by Bill Belichick or Tony Dungy respectively for disciplinary issues? Absolutely AWFUL. Cam Newton isn’t a winner. He’s never going to be a winner in the NFL. No way.
#27 Computer Hope Yes it was the 49ers but a 26-6 win with your 2nd team is pretty nice for the Bears. I really like the Bears. I think all the injuries are forcing some other players to step up but it gives the Bears options. What if they go into next season with Matt Barkley under center? It might not be awful. Jordan Howard has proved he’s a legitimate #1 RB and I think Josh Bellamy & Cam Meredith have done a good job split wide giving the Bears even more depth at receiver. I hope they are healthy in ’17.
#28 Computer Hope To a certain degree you want to hammer the Jags for losing a game to Denver that it most certainly should have won. Statistically the Jags pounded a Denver team that was anemic offensively. On the other hand you can argue the process and note this was Jacksonville’s 5 straight loss by 10 points or less and their 7th such game on the season. At some point at least some of those games have to turn to wins which I think jump starts the organization. Can you ask for more patience?
#29 Computer Hope Jeff Fisher just signed a contract extension!? HOW IN THE WORLD IS THAT POSSIBLE!? This is his 5th season with the Rams and they’ve yet to post a winning record! He spent 17 years with the Oilers/Titans and made the playoffs all of six times. That’s 22 total seasons as a head coach in the NFL with six playoff appearances. That seems thin to me. Maybe these organizations really valued stability? The Rams will almost certainly be a sexy wild card pick next season!
#30 Computer Hope How can you almost beat New England one week and the very next get humiliated by the Colts in your own stadium!? Ryan Fitzpatrick didn’t take long to go all Ryan Fitzpatrick on us and Bryce Petty was inserted into the game but he kept the trend going by tossing two picks of his own. It doesn’t tell the whole story but the Jets are -15 in TO margin. You can’t overcome that much error which is why New York is 3-9. They need a QB in the worst way & the 2017 draft is void of one.
#31 Computer Hope Well the 49ers finally benched Colin Kaepernick. They still lost but it at least showed that Chip Kelly wasn’t beholden to a QB who wasn’t a part of the solution yet put up big stats in meaningless games that resulted in losses. Benching Kaepernick was a solid move & the 49ers have some good pieces on defense along with Carlos Hyde at tailback. It’s not a completely lost cause despite being 1-11 but it’s increasingly clear that Chip Kelly is not be the NFL coach he was at Oregon.
#32 Computer Hope The good news is that the Browns didn’t lose this week. The bad news is that the Browns didn’t have the opportunity to play this week! It looks likely that Cleveland is going to replicate the feat the Detroit Lions pulled off in 2008 when they went 0-16. It’s also worth noting that 4-years later the Lions were 10-6 and made the playoffs. The bigger question here is if there is a Matthew Stafford in the 2017 draft the way there was in 2009 when the Lions made him the #1 pick.
