NFL POWER 32 – WEEK 12 2015

#1 Computer Hope Carolina held Dallas to 31 yards rushing & picked off Tony Romo 3 times before knocking him out of the game & putting him on the shelf for the rest of the season! That would have been inconceivable a year ago with how well DeMarco Murray was running the football. Carolina’s defense is nothing short of amazing, but don’t forget that the offense is averaging 30PPG! They very well could finish the season 16-0.
#2 Computer Hope Tommy was pissed after the game, but what he should be concerned about is his lack of options on the offensive side of the football. Sure New England lost to Denver last week, but Rob Gronkowski was hurt which leaves the offense with Scott Chandler! It’s probably nothing but the road games against Houston & NY Jets don’t look easy & the Patriots do not own the tiebreaker against Denver. Is their #1 seed in jeopardy?
#3 Computer Hope Is it time to worry in Arizona? The 19-13 win over the 49ers is more alarming than you might think. Arizona pulled out a 6-point win over a terrible team despite said team going 0-9 on 3rd down conversions, committing 13 penalties & being -2 in TO margin! That should equal a 20 point win instead of a 6pt victory in a game that was tied 13-13 after 3 quarters! Arizona has won 5 straight but 4 of 5 have been close.
#4 Computer Hope Buffalo is a good football & had KC pinned down 16-7 late in the 2nd quarter. From that point forward the Chiefs outscored the Bills 23-6 to take a 30-22 victory & command the AFC Wild Card race. KC has won 5 straight & their schedule is soft as cookies the rest of way meaning 11-5 is on the table. I’d be very scared. Alex Smith doesn’t make mistakes & the defense is nasty. I DO NOT want to see them in the playoffs.
#5 Computer Hope After a couple of close losses in back to back weeks, the Bengals got back down to business, destroying St. Louis 31-7 while holding Rams RB Todd Gurley to 19 yards rushing on 9 carries. When Andy Dalton is on top of his game, the Bengals are almost impossible to stop offensively. There are too many weapons between Dalton, Bernard, Hill, Green and Eifert. If Cincy beats Denver & NE loses again, this is your #1 seed.
#6 Computer Hope You have to wonder if the addition of Jimmy Graham was actually hurting Russell Wilson? With Graham out, Wilson went nuts on Pittsburgh passing for 345 yards & 5TD in a 39-30 win over the Steelers. The only problem was Seattle’s defense getting LIT UP by the Steelers passing game. Richard Shermon held Antonio Bryant in check but that was about it. If Wilson doesn’t go off, Seattle likely loses this one.
#7 Computer Hope This is a completely different team without Ben Roethlisberger so the concussion issues are huge for the Steelers. Putting up 30 on Seattle’s defense is still impressive & it’s also impressive in how many different ways Pittsburgh can beat you with the pass, but that defense looked BRUTAL. This will be a tough team come playoff time, but I think it’s worth considering that their road isn’t exactly easy to get there.
#8 Computer Hope Anytime you can beat the Patriots it’s worth celebrating. Beating them in OT with Brock Osweiler is almost parade worthy! Just in case everyone forgot, it’s worth mentioning that Gary Kubiak spent 8 years as the head coach of the Houston Texans. During that time period he went 61-64 & made the regular season twice in those 8 years. Let’s let that sink in before we start praising Kubiak’s offensive strategy.
#9 Computer Hope The 17-13 win over Green Bay in Lambeau was a thing of beauty & right now it’s hard to think Chicago isn’t the best team in the North given what Green Bay did to the Vikings in Minnesota the week prior. The Bears are 5-3 in their last 8 & those 3 losses have come by a total of 8 points! If you take out the Arizona & Detroit losses, Chicago’s defense has allowed 19.9PPG. That would rank #6 in the NFL! Impressive.
#10 Computer Hope Over the last 3 weeks the Packers have taken home losses against the Bears & Lions yet went on the road to Minnesota & handed the Vikings a 30-13 hammering! I don’t think it’s time to worry just yet. Green Bay is 1-4 in their last 5 after starting 6-0 but they can still win the North & grab the #3 seed. What is a bit concerning is the offense is struggling to find consistency & they might have a road playoff game.
#11 Computer Hope It really is amazing how much Adrian Peterson dictates whether or not the Vikings win games. Two weeks ago Green Bay held AD to 45 yards on 13 carries in a 30-13 blowout win over Minnesota. This past week Peterson rushes for 158 yards on 29 carries in a 20-10 win over Atlanta. Minnesota’s schedule from this point is NASTY so it’ll be interesting to see how they do when good defenses take away Peterson.
#12 Computer Hope Here in Indianapolis it almost feels like a disappointing season. HC Chuck Pagano has come under fire. The Colts are only 6-5 & tied with the Texans to lead the AFC South. Andrew Luck is hurt. However, Indy is 6-3 in their last 9 games & those 3 losses were by 7 points or less. Five of the 6 wins are of the same variety so it’s a mixed bag. If Hasselbeck is 7-0 when Luck comes back, do you pull him?
#13 Computer Hope Houston’s defense put together another amazing performance in completely shutting down Drew Brees and the Saints in a 24-6 win that kept the Texans on pace with Indianapolis. Houston’s defense has allowed 8.8PPG in their last 4 games, all wins. The next 3 weeks should determine Houston’s playoff viability as they play the Bills, Patriots & Colts in consecutive weeks. Bill O’Brien is doing an amazing job!
#14 Computer Hope Well hello there Seth Roberts! Roberts went undrafted out of West Alabama, but the guy runs a 4.4 forty & is 6’2/200lbs. Last week against Tennessee, Roberts caught 6 balls for 113 yards & 2TD in Oakland’s 24-21 win over the Titans. It’s a big development as Roberts could be the #2 receiver of the future behind Amari Cooper & gives QB Derek Carr yet another weapon to throw to. Roberts is a great story so far!
#15 Computer Hope Since their week 1 loss to Miami, the Redskins are 5-0 at home and 0-5 on the road! The 20-14 home win over New York this past week not only improved Washington to 5-6, it also pushed the Redskins into 1st place in the NFC East! With Dallas & Philadelphia basically cashing in, the Redskins could take down the East. They have 2 home games left so there is 7 wins but road games against Philly & Dallas should decide their fate.
#16 Computer Hope The Jets put on an offensive clinic in beating Miami 38-20 last week. Everyone played well and the defense got after it sacking Ryan Tannehill three times & forcing a couple of turnovers. It was a much needed win for New York after going 1-4 in their previous 5. The Jets are right there at 6-5 but they are going to have to win some tough games down the stretch to hold off Buffalo, Houston, Kansas City & Pittsburgh.
#17 Computer Hope The Bills aren’t a bad team but they aren’t an elite team either. At 5-6 they are sort of what their schedule says, but their schedule is also somewhat of a problem. Buffalo has 6 losses which is too many & only one of them is bad (Jax) which came when Tyrod Taylor was injured. The other 5 came against: NE, NYG, CIN, NE (again) and KC. Those are good football teams. Buffalo needs to beat some good teams.
#18 Computer Hope The 20-14 loss to the Redskins dropped the Giants to 5-6 and they are out of 1st place in the NFC East due to tiebreakers. It’s been a frustrating year for the G-Men as they can’t seem to find any consistency on a week to week basis. They are 2-4 in their last 6 & 3 of their remaining games are difficult. The Giants defense has been a real problem spot this year. A good defense might have New York at 10-1 or 9-2!
#19 Computer Hope The Eagles are garbage right now but their defense has been a bright spot in a dark season and Detroit just TORCHED that Philly D for 45 points! Detroit showed last week just how dangerous a team this can be when the offense is on their A game. The Lions have won 3 straight & are 4-2 in their last 6 games. Green Bay at home is up next. If Detroit can win that game, then a 9-7 season is possible. Will it be enough?
#20 Computer Hope So far this season Tampa Bay’s wins & losses by week look like this: L-W-L-L-W-L-W-L-W-W-L. That’s fairly inconsistent which is what you’d expect from a rookie QB which is what Tampa Bay has under center. Being 5-6 at this point has surpassed my wildest expectations so I’m sure the Bucs faithful have to be happy. I’m not sure Tampa can make a playoff run but being an average football team is progress!
#21 Computer Hope Opening week gifts by NY Giants & Philadelphia really masked the ineptitude of this Falcons team. Those two wins & the next soft 3 allowed the Falcons a 5-0 start, but their true colors have bled through as they’ve plummeted to 6-5 & have gone 1-5 in their last 6 & are currently on a 4-game losings streak. Matt Ryan needs to play way better. He has 16TD this season but 12 picks. Ryan is so much better than that!
#22 Computer Hope In his first 4 games as a starter, Todd Gurley ran for 566yds & 3TD while averaging 6.4ypc! The Rams went 3-1. In his last 4 games as a starter, Gurley has ran for 219yds & 3TD while averaging 3.1ypc. The Rams are 0-4 in that stretch. That’s to be expected given St. Louis’ QB issues. St. Louis is a poor man’s Minnesota at this point in that they are behind the Vikings in HC, RB & QB ability. Fisher might be gone.
#23 Computer Hope The 31-25 loss to San Diego hurts in a lot of ways. First off the secondary was exposed yet again as Philip Rivers went to work & never let up paving his own way to 300 yards & 3TD. Second, Allen Hurns suffered a concussion & might not be back for awhile. Lastly, the loss puts the Jaguars 2 games behind both Houston & Indianapolis, a couple of teams that seemingly can’t lose. I still like this team when healthy.
#24 Computer Hope When Brian Hoyer is outplaying Drew Brees, you know you have issues. New Orleans is a long way from 2009 when they won a Super Bowl. The defense is atrocious & the offense isn’t very good either with no legit passing threats. The real issue is whether or not Sean Payton is going to leave when the season ends? The only opening is Miami and I’m not sure I’d want to take on that dumpster fire as it stands.
#25 Computer Hope Excitement should be tempered because it’s Jacksonville, but SD’s had one of those seasons where a 31-25 victory over a scrub team takes on a lot more meaning. Philip Rivers had a field day against the Jaguars secondary going for 300 yards & 4TD. The win broke SD’s 6 game losing streak. It’s too bad that Rivers doesn’t have much to work with right now due to injuries. He & McCoy make an amazing pair.
#26 Computer Hope How is this for weird, the Titans are 0-6 at home this year & haven’t won a home game since last year when they beat Jacksonville 16-14 in Week 6. The Titans are currently on an 11-game losing streak at home. Who do they play this week? Jacksonville at home! It would be interesting to see them snap the streak against the team they last had a home win against. It isn’t their year but I love this team going forward.
#27 Computer Hope I’ve been waiting all season for regression to hit the Ravens & it finally looks like it is coming. In Baltimore’s first 7 games, they were 1-6 but 5 of those losses were by 7 points or less. In their last 4 games, the Ravens are 3-1 with the 3 wins being by 6 points or less! The loss in their past 4 games was by 2 points. Oddly enough Baltimore has a 10-1 “best case” record & 10 of their 11 games have been decided by 7 points or less.
#28 Computer Hope The Eagles are 1-4 in their last 5 games & are coming off back-to-back games in which they allowed 45 points! Let’s also clarify that Philly wasn’t coming off back-to-back road games against New England & Arizona. No, the Eagles gave up 45 points to both Detroit & Tampa Bay! Injuries have hit this team hard & there is no QB for Chip Kelly to work with. I don’t see why Kelly would want to come back to Philly.
#29 Computer Hope Dallas is in a very interesting position all of a sudden. At 3-8 this team is terrible & there doesn’t look like there is another win on the schedule meaning Dallas could wind up 3-13. Tony Romo is the QB & I get that, but if they get the #1 pick, do they grab Jared Goff or Paxton Lynch & groom him under Romo the way Green Bay did with Rodgers & Favre? The future could very well depend on it because Romo can’t last forever.
#30 Computer Hope You have to give credit to the 49ers. They played like garbage & still almost beat the 9-2 Cardinals. According to Football Outsiders, this is the worst team in the NFL ranking 31st in both offense & defense. The 49ers may have only 1 more win on the schedule which would put them at 4-12 on the season but watch Blaine Gabbert. He’s trying to show he could be the long term solution & oddly enough, he’s making a case.
#31 Computer Hope After their 38-20 blowout loss to the Jets, the Dolphins are 1-4 in their last 5 having been outscored 78-150! Ndamukong Suh said there is nobody good enough to play with him on defense. The Dolphins fired OC Bill Lazor. Could this be any more of an implosion? Firing Lazor could be interesting. RB Lamar Miller averages almost 5ypc yet gets 10 carries a game while Tannehill takes a beating. Maybe running will help!
#32 Computer Hope Wow! The Browns invent ways to lose games on a weekly basis. This week Cleveland loses to Baltimore on a blocked FG return for TD on the last play of the game! The Browns have now lost 6 straight games & there are whispers that HC Mike Pettine is on the hot seat. It doesn’t matter what happens here until the QB situation is figured out & there doesn’t seem to be a solution in sight. Is Jared Goff the answer?
