SIAC Week 4 Review

CASTLE 28, EVANSVILLE BOSSE 9

The weather was pretty terrible in Evansville this past week which led Castle to defeat Bosse 28-9 in only one half of play. This was somewhat of an odd game as Castle’s HC Doug Hurt’s wife died this past week after fighting a battle with brain cancer. Hurt still coached the game & Castle looked impressive in their victory. Castle QB Mitch Gilles 17 of 20 for 190 yards & 3TD while throwing a pick. RB Andrew Finch added 76 yards & a TD on 8 carries for the Knights. Nothing really else to say about the game. Bosse is just sucking like crazy & now stands at 0-4 after they forfeited their win over Washington from earlier this season. The Bulldogs defense is brutal. Castle had another easy win. It won’t help them with the polls or with the Jeff Sagarin ratings, but you can only play the games on the schedule.

EVANSVILLE NORTH 41, EVANSVILLE HARRISON 34

North RB Blake Howell went absolutely crazy in this one rushing for 311 yards & 4TD on 29 carries. It’s not surprising that the Huskies win games when Howell runs wild. The problem is how in the world does your star running back rush for 300+ yards & yet your team still wins by just 7 games? That’s considered a close game which could have gone either way. This game was never in hand for North. At halftime the score was 14-14. North got out to a 41-20 lead late in the 4th quarter, but Mr. Everything Aaron Killebrew returning a kick to make it 41-27. Then Harrison recovered an on-side kick which the Warriors turned into a 6-yard Killebrew run to cut it to 41-34 with less than 3 minutes to play! Killebrew himself finished with over 200 yards rushing & scored 4TD himself. Really tough game and I’m not sure what to make of it. For North it’s odd because this team is 3-1 and probably should be 4-0. Then again, their wins have come against Memorial, Bosse & Harrison. Combined those 3 teams have a 1-11 record! As for Harrison, they are getting closer & closer & I don’t think it’s out of the question for the Warriors to get a couple of SIAC wins over Bosse & Memorial which would be a huge step in the right direction.

EVANSVILLE MATER DEI 23, EVANSVILLE MEMORIAL 8

Memorial never crossed mid-field until there was about a minute left to play in the game! It was another dominating performance by Mater Dei as the Wildcats improved to 4-0. QB Jace Hartz threw for 167 yards & 1TD. RB Nolan Goebel added 99 yards rushing and a TD for the Wildcats. What’s really impressive about Mater Dei so far this season is the defense. They are getting better & better defensively which certainly gives them a significant advantage. It’s pretty amazing how Hartz has given Mater Dei an easy transition taking over for Dane Maurer. As for Memorial I really can’t believe they are this bad. I really thought Memorial looked like one of the best teams in the SIAC with Dane Hurley & McKinley Warren returning along with a defense that had a lot of senior leadership. Instead, Memorial’s offense is completely in the tank & the defense is terrible. The Tigers are now 0-4 which I simply can’t believe!

EVANSVILLE CENTRAL 36, EVANSVILLE REITZ 31

KeAndre Vaughn did everything he could this weekend for Reitz rushing for 201 yards & 2TD on 43 carries, but Central got a key interception at the end of the game to preserve the 36-31 lead into a victory which improves the Bears record to 3-1 while dropping Reitz to 1-3! Central’s Trevor Ferguson came up with the key interception but also added 5 catches for 95 yards & a TD while Central RB Avion Sullivan ran for 94 yards on 14 carries. Sullivan added in two rushing TDs and also returned a kick for a TD. This is a great win Central as it really elevates them to a tier just below castle & Mater Dei. As for Reitz, man do they stink. They still have their opening week win against Henderson Co., but they are now they are 0-2 in the SIAC. The only silver lining we have about Reitz is that their two conference losses have come against Central & Castle. Those are two solid teams and the loss to Central is close. Reitz needs to forget about a conference championship. If they can get better over the rest of the season, they’ll be able to play with Jasper & Central in sectional play. That’s something to shoot for now with the Panthers.

WASHINGTON 13, NORTH DAVIESS 7, OT

Not surprised the Evansville Courier-Press doesn’t have a writeup about this game. Just looking at the big picture here, the Hatchets are in a world of hurt. North Daviess is one of the worst teams in Class 1A and Washington needed OT to beat them & only scored 13 points in doing so! The good news of course is Washington finally won a game. With the forfeit win over Bosse, Washington now stands at 2-2 which is a sight better than what it looks like. Right now the Hatchets don’t make a lot of sense to me. Sure they are a very young team, but they should be better than this.

  1. Sagarin breakdown:

    1st tier – Castle (24) and Mater Dei (35)
    2nd tier – Central (65)
    3rd tier – North (100) and Reitz (102)
    4th tier – Harrison (120) and Memorial (121)
    5th tier – Bosse (190)

Sagarin says the Tigers are a poor man’s Harrison! Ouch. Reitz is hanging with North, which has to make west siders sick. I saw in the CP comments section that the Panthers faithful have turned on their coaching staff. Reitz fans turn on you QUICK.

    Highest in class:
    5A – Castle at #18
    4A – Central at #16
    3A – Memorial at #20
    2A – Mater Dei at #3

Cathedral is only 5th in the state right now overall. Are they up in arms up there?

  2. Yeah but Cathedral has started the season 1-3! So far:

Week 1: Lost to Ben Davis 24-21. Ben Davis is 4-0 & ranked #2 in 5A
Week 2: Beat Warren Central 14-7. Warren Central is 2-2 & ranked #5 in 5A (Their 2 losses are to Cathedral & Ben Davis)
Week 3: Lost to Cincinnati St. Xavier 33-27. Cincy St. Xavier is one of the top-ranked teams in the highest class in Ohio. They are 2-1.
Week 4: Lost to Indianapolis Chatard 21-7. Chatard is 4-0 & ranked #1 in Class 3A

    Good grief.
