2011 SIAC Week 3 – Matchups!

Week 3 baby! It’s only been a couple of weeks, but I think there are a couple of interesting story lines about the SIAC. The first surprise to me has been the Castle Knights. I wasn’t that impressed with QB Mitch Gilles last season when he did some backup duty for the Knights. This year he’s looking like the best QB in the SIAC not named Jalen Pendleton! Castle didn’t give up less than 21 points in any game last season, but so far in 2011, Castle has outscored their opponents 89-0! That’s two shutouts! Castle was this close to going to semi-state last season and they look very very good at the moment.

Speaking of looking good, Mater Dei definitely looks like the best team in the SIAC. After last week’s absolute humiliation of Central by the score of 49-6, I’m not sure even Reitz is going to hand with the Wildcats this season. The defense has been downright nasty while Dane Maurer & Cody Hess have been virtually unstoppable. Mater Dei is easily 7-0 with games against Castle & Reitz left to see if they can run the table. This team looks like a squad ready for a state championship.

Last, but certainly not least, is Bosse QB Jalen Pendleton who is the best player in the SIAC and it isn’t even close. Kid ran for just shy of 300 yards last week in a win over Washington. Get out and watch this kid because there isn’t anyone more exciting with the football than Pendleton. He’s reaching the Reggie Bush/Chris Johnson level of excitement. At least in the SIAC! Let’s take a look at an all-conference SIAC Week 3.

ROAD PREDICTION HOME
Castle is coming off a 45-0 beating of New Albany in Indianapolis while Bosse is coming off a huge 21-14 home win over fellow Class 3 rival Washington. I can’t be more impressed with Castle QB Mitch Gilles. Kid is 29 for 38 for 478 yards & 6TD without a pick in his first 2 games. That’s a 76.3% completion rate! I thought Castle would miss Logan Hayford, but DeAndre Andrews & Andre Finch have combined to rush for 390 yards & 4TD. Obviously the defense has been outstanding. That defense is probably going to get scored on this week with Jalen Pendleton under center for the Bulldogs. Pendleton is a bit limited in his passing game because Bosse saw some turnover in their skill positions from last year, but Pendleton himself has rushed for 385 yards! Ummmm, that’s almost 200 rush yards/G! At the moment these are likely the 2 best QBs in the SIAC going at it. This game though will come down to Bosse’s ability to play defense. Castle probably won’t stop Pendleton for the entire game, but Bosse isn’t going to score 50. I think the Knights, who rank #9 in Class 5A, get a win here and keep moving up the rankings.
The two worst teams in the SIAC and it’s not really that close. Harrison doesn’t look as bad as the 59-14 loss they took last week against Mayfield (KY). Mayfield is one of the best 10 HS football teams in Kentucky and Harrison is still in a serious rebuilding mode to try and claim back past glory. Harrison was going to lose that game no matter what. North of course is coming off a beat down by Henderson Co. (KY). I don’t really get North. Defensively they were hurt pretty badly by Henderson Co.’s option offense. Harrison doesn’t run an option type of offense, but QB Jamey Malvern could have a good game with his mobility. Harrison is tough to figure. They hammered West Vigo 36-0 in their opener. I’m going out on a limb and saying Harrison wins this game. They are closer to breaking out and I think the difference between North & Mayfield will be startling while Malvern should run wild on North’s defense. Harrison gets their 2nd win.
You have to be impressed with Memorial bouncing back after getting shutout by Jasper in Week 1. They won a hard fought battle at Bosse Field against Belleville (IL). Especially with starting QB Dane Hurley still out with injury. New QB Charlie Greif had a great game against Belleville, but he’s not playing Belleville this week. He’s got Mater Dei on the road! Mater Dei is ranked #2 in Class 2A and I don’t see them losing a game in the SIAC this season. Cody Hess & Dane Maurer have been virtually unstoppable. Mater Dei has outscored their opponents 82-16 in their first 2 games. I would like Memorial’s chances a lot better if Dane Hurley were starting at QB, but with Grief playing, MD is going to run wild. If the line here was -25 in favor of Mater Dei I’d take Mater Dei. This Mater Dei team feels a lot like last year’s Reitz team did. Hopefully the Wildcats can get a little further in the state playoffs than Reitz did a year ago. This doesn’t mean Memorial is bad either. The Tigers are solid even with Hurley sidelined, but MD is on another level entirely. Just ask Central.
Most people around Evansville believe the Mater Dei/Memorial is the game of the week, but Mater Dei is going to put the hammer down so in my opinion a bigger conference barometer game might be Central/Reitz. Reitz is tough to get a handle on. They haven’t been dominating at all needing 2 come from behind victories to start the year 2-0, but then again, Henderson Co. (KY) and Paducah Tilghman (KY) are pretty good teams and Reitz found a way to win. The Panthers are ranked #1 in Class 4A and are one of the best teams in the state. So what gives? I’m not entirely sure. I wonder if Drew Johnston wouldn’t make the team better if he were playing QB with Nathan Tidwell playing WR. Just a thought. Central is a lot better than they showed against Mater Dei is a horrifying 49-6 loss. Mater Dei simply might be that good. QB Jacob Hester is very good, but I wonder if the Bears simply lost too much from the skill positions a year ago? I’d love to see Central put something together, but if they get blown out, Central might lose quite a few SIAC games. Unfortunately for Central, they’ll get beat this week.
