Poinsettia Bowl – A Very Underrated Bowl!

A really cool game tonight that pits Navy against San Diego St. Navy is a triple option team under HC Ken Niumatalolo that as you might guess runs the ball exceptionally with a solid QB names Ricky Dobbs. Navy ranks 5th in the NCAA in rushing offense averaging almost 290 rushing yards per game. The Aztecs have a rush defense that ranks 51st so it won’t be like SD State will do a good job stopping the run. On the other hand, San Diego St. has the 10th best passing offense averaging 297 passing yards per game. Navy’s pass defense ranks 64th in the nation. The teams are almost identical when it comes to scoring offense & defense. SD State’s HC Brady Hoke is a defense-first guy so it’ll be interesting how he gameplans against the Midshipmen.

The other interesting aspect is that Hoke’s name is on fire in coaching circles while it’s interesting that Niumatalolo hasn’t had as much interest given how successful Paul Johnson has been at Georgia Tech.

POINSETTIA BOWL
Navy 9-3 Comments San Diego St. 8-4
Underrated game against 2 quality teams. Another game that has contrasting styles as Navy loves to run out of their triple option set against SD State’s love of throwing the football. Navy is a top-20 team while Brady Hoke is a defense guy so it’ll be interesting to see how he gameplans against the Navy running attack.
