St. Petersburg Bowl, Mike Leach & Ralph Friedgen

After a weekend of nothing but NFL football, the collegians get back to work on Tuesday night with Louisville & Southern Miss locking up in the St. Petersburg Bowl. So how about that St. Petersburg Bowl? The one reason to watch this game in my opinion is simply watching Charlie Strong’s Louisville team complete its resurgence. Playing in their first bowl game in 4 years, Charlie Strong has done great things with the Cardinals in a very short time. Strong came in and got Louisville’s defense to play very well which makes sense given that he was Florida’s ex-DC before coming to Louisville. It’s a great story I think.

If you haven’t been keeping up with my coaching changes page you can click on the link which shows all the openings (and closings!) so far for both NCAA & NFL football. In what could be the most interesting news story about coaching this year is what’s going on with Maryland. It sounds crazy to say with all the coaching changes going on at Texas along with Urban Meyer stepping down at Florida, but the Terrapins are turning into some kind of odd side show.

Ralph Friedgen just won coach of the year in the ACC, but Maryland buys out his final year and the rumor is that the job is Mike Leach’s if he wants it! Anywhere Mike Leach goes is going to be ridiculously interesting, but a couple of things here are piquing my interest. The first is that Friedgen is an alum of Maryland. I don’t know if Ralph still wants to coach, but I’d think anything less than your alma mater would be somewhat of a let down. Maybe this is Friedgen’s final year of coaching, and at least he can go out a winner. The other side of the coin is Mike Leach himself. He’s a helluva coach although he was fired at Texas Tech for apparently being a little too hard on Craig James’s boy.

What I think is most interesting is Leach potentially going to the ACC. If Leach could win at Texas Tech, I’m guessing he can also win at Maryland because the ACC isn’t quite the conference the Big XII is although next season the Big XII isn’t going to be what we’ve known the Big XII to be in recent years. Still, Maryland doesn’t exactly scream “FOOTBALL SCHOOL” so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. He’s in the same division at NC State & Florida St. so he does avoid Miami-FL, Virginia Tech, North Carolina & Georgia Tech which is a very good thing, but going up against Jimbo Fisher & Tom O’Brien years probably isn’t going to be too much different than going up against Bob Stoops & Mack Brown. FSU & NC State aren’t what Oklahoma & Texas are currently, but still, it’s an interesting place to land.

At first glance I think Leach might be a better fit in the Pac 10, but it’ll be a treat to see him come to the East Coast.

Louisville 6-6 Comments Southern Miss 8-4
A really good game of contrasts. In his 1st year, Charlie Strong has led the Louisville defense to rank 15th nationally in scoring defense. Southern Miss has been an explosive offensive team so the game will probably come down to which unit blinks. It should be fun to watch Southern Miss QB Austin Davis go to work against the Cardinal defense.
