NCAA Football Week 12 – Can’t Miss Games

This weekend doesn’t really showcase any top shelf meaningful games, but it’s a very interesting week nonetheless. Time is running out on the college football season so we are still basically looking at positioning for the bowls & getting bowl eligible for certain teams. Take a look at this list of teams still not bowl eligible:

Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Texas, Texas Tech, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, BYU, Oregon St., California, UCLA, Georgia & Tennessee

That’s an amazing list. Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson, Texas & Notre Dame. All bowl ineligible at the same time!? Now take a look at the list of teams that are in fact bowl eligible:

Maryland, Baylor, Syracuse, Northwestern, UTEP, Army, Kentucky, & Mississippi St.

How odd do those lists look in comparison? The season is coming down to determining if Oregon & Auburn stay undefeated. Unfortunately for us this week, neither team plays as they gear up towards their end of the season run. Both have 2 games left. Both need 2 wins to guarantee a matchup in the BCS Championship game. For the rest of the teams, it’s all about hope & positioning.

ROAD HOME PREDICTION
Should be a decent game & one that at least Boise St. can be proud of, but we are still talking about yet another home game for the Broncos against a tough team. They need to legitimately go on the road (not a neutral site!) & beat an excellent team. I’m not sure Nevada counts.
At 7-3 Michigan is already bowl eligible so I think Rich Rodriguez probably saves his job, but how great would a win over Wisconsin or Ohio St. be to end the year? The Badgers are primed for the Rose Bowl if they keep on winning. The road won’t be as easy as it was against Indiana.
Believe it or not, Pittsburgh is in 1st place in the Big East, but not yet bowl eligible! The Big East right now is intriguing because of all the different possibilities, but I’m rooting for South Florida here. If they win, Pittsburgh STILL isn’t bowl eligible.
This game is interesting because sometimes West Virginia can lay an egg & a win by The Ville puts them at 6-5 & bowl eligible in Charlie Strong’s first season. Louisville can’t win the Big East, but a loss here by Bill Stewart has to put the heat on him by the Morgantown faithful.
Great instate rivalry game with quite a bit of meaning. If NC State can get by the Tar Heels then they are a win next week against Maryland away from playing in the ACC title game. It would be a huge year for the Wolfpack & one that would signify Tom O’Brien having the program headed in the right direction.
Things have an odd way of working out. While Oregon barely got past Cal & the Ducks beat Stanford, I’m expecting Stanford to roll the Bears pretty good. Stanford was off last week while Cal had their best game of the year. Things will regress which means a huge win for the Cardinal.
Huge game of importance. Michigan St. is rooting like crazy for Iowa because an Iowa win sends Sparty to the Rose Bowl. Both Ohio St. & Wisconsin want a Buckeyes victory because it probably sends both to BCS bowl. Iowa? Geez, they need a win for respectability reasons!
If Miami-FL wants to win the ACC Coastal, they need to win this game & hope Tech loses to Virginia next week. There is still a glimmer of hope so the Canes have to play for it & win this game. A loss here puts Miami at 7-4 (5-3) with a game against USF remaining. How hot does Randy Shannon’s seat get if the Canes finish the season 7-5?
Nationally not a huge game, but it’s a HUGE won for the SEC & the programs themselves. If Arkansas can win here & beat LSU next week they would finish 10-2 & most likely the 2nd place team in the SEC. A MSU win means MSU is likely 9-3 & a top-20 team. This is a huge game for both programs.
Remember that this is Iowa St.’s last game & at 5-6 they need a win. Remember too that ISU can be very good having beaten Texas Tech & Texas already. Iowa St. is going to be balls out at home so it’ll be an excellent test to see how Missouri can handle it. The Tigers aren’t really playing for anything outside of a better bowl at this point.
This game is interesting now because of Notre Dame’s win over Utah. At 5-5, the Irish get bowl eligible with a win today over Army! That’s crazy. Still should be a good game b/c Army runs that option attack that gave the Irish fits when they got hammered by Navy. In a weird twist, Army is the team already bowl eligible.
UConn is coming off a huge win over Pittsburgh. If UConn wins out they could still win the Big East. If Syracuse wins out then they need help b/c they lost to Pitt. How good is the coaching getting in the Big East? Randy Edsall & Doug Marrone are coaching in this game! Wow.
How’s this for crazy: If A&M wins out they would be 6-2 in the Big XII South. If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma St., both of those teams would also be 6-2 giving us a 3-way tie that is similar to the Big 10. Because there was no head-to-head sweep it would go to the BCS which would probably put Oklahoma in the Big XII title game! That’s N-U-T-S!
Really interesting. Oklahoma still has a shot at winning the South but the first step is beating Baylor. What makes this game intriguing is that Baylor is a good team while Oklahoma definitely has a Jekyll & Hyde show at home & on the road. This is a road game where the Sooners haven’t played well so Baylor has a shot at winning.
Huge game in the ACC Atlantic. FSU has to win & then hope like hell Maryland beats NC State next week or that NC State loses his week to UNC. Maryland can win the Atlantic if they beat FSU this week & NC State next week. They are both home games for Maryland so the Terps absolutely control their own destiny.
Keep in mind that Oregon St. is 4-5 with USC, Oregon & Stanford remaining on the schedule. They need to go 2-1 to get to 6-6 meaning somebody season is going to get seriously tarnished if OSU is to get bowl eligible. I like this game also for USC. At 7-3 with OSU, ND & UCLA remaining, the Trojans could get to 10-3 which would be amazing considering what the program had to go through to get to this point.
