SIAC Sectional Championships – Matchups

Let’s strap it on baby because tomorrow night 4 SIAC schools are gearing for a sectional championship! I’m not surprised at all about Memorial, Reitz & Mater Dei being there at the end, but some school along with them are more than interesting. Evansville Bosse shocked the Southern Indiana world by beating a ranked Washington Hatchets squad in the semifinals to get a rematch with Memorial for a Sectional 8 title. Not bad indeed! The the surprise is Castle. The Class 5A Sectional 8 is pretty pathetic by all standards without a ranked team of the lot, but Floyd Central is 9-2 even if they aren’t ranked taking on a 5-6 Castle team who lost to this same Floyd Central team last season in the sectional final.

One thing is for sure & that’s Class 4A & Class 3A will have champions coming out of the SIAC. I also think Mater Dei gets through giving the conference 3 teams advancing to regionals. Hopefully Castle can join them because if the Knights can win their sectional over Floyd Central, they stand a decent chance to get to the Semi-State because Sectional 7 in Indiana’s Class 5A is rather weak as well.

ROAD HOME PREDICTION
Bosse has to be riding high getting a home sectional game after scoring 118 points in their first 2 games. The Tigers beat them 35-14 back on 9/4 so the basic question is whether Bosse improved by that much? Memorial has scored 151 points in their 2 sectional games. Memorial’s defense is simply too good here.
This is the heavy hitter this week. An 11-0 Reitz squad travels to the North Side to take on a 9-2 Central team it beat earlier in the year 35-21. Central has been ROLLING & is on a 7-game winning streak plus gets this one at home. I don’t think the Bears pull it out, but they only lost by 14 the first time around.
Mater Dei takes on Southridge this week in Class 2A & I think this gets ugly EARLY! So far the 5th ranked Wildcats have outscored their opponents 110-14 in their first 2 sectional games. Mater Dei has North Putnam possibly in the semi-state, but there is nothing really in their way from reaching the state championship game.
I’m actually sort of surprised Floyd Central at 9-2 isn’t getting at least some votes in the Class 5A poll. Oddly enough these two teams have 3 common opponents. They’ve both played Evansville North, Jennings Co. & Bedford. Castle actually has better point spread wins than Floyd Central so maybe this one will be a lot closer than I think. I still say Castle loses but maybe Logan Hayford isn’t ready to end his high school career just yet.

There are a few other high school games around the state of Indiana that look pretty amazing as sectional championship games. I’m going to briefly mention them here as well.

ROAD HOME PREDICTION
In Class 5A, Hamilton SE visits Fishers in the Sectional 4 finals. Hamilton SE is #6 in the class with a 10-1 record. Fishers is ranked #8 with the same 10-1 record. They are 2 of the 5 highest ranked teams remaining in Class 5A. Fishers only loss came to Hamilton SE in the 2nd week of the season by the score of 40-17.
Ft. Wayne Dwenger travels to Columbia City in the Class 4A Sectional 11 finals. Dwenger is currently 10-0 & ranked #2 behind Evansville Reitz. Columbia City is 10-1 & ranked 8th. Neither team has played each other this season but Dwenger is the most likely team to play Reitz in the state championship so they are worth keeping an eye on.
Leo visits Eastbrook in the Class 3A Sectional 19 championship. Leo is currently ranked #3 in Class 3A & is 10-1 while Eastbrook is 11-0 & ranked #1. It has a lot of the feel of the Jasper/Reitz game we had in the SIAC in the first week of sectionals in that a top tier team is being eliminated early. One less team to get in Memorial’s way if they get that far I suppose.
This should be a good one. Pioneer travels to Lafayette Central Catholic in a #1 v. #2 matchup. Lafayette CC is 11-0 & #1 while Pioneer is 10-1 & #2. What is somewhat unique about this is Lafayette CC’s record. Sure it’s 11-0 but they’ve outscored their opponents 567-26 on the year! That’s just insane. They went 14-0 last year en route to a state title by outscoring their opponents 733-42. They are on a 25-game winning streak. This is Class 1A Sectional 34.
