NCAA Football Week 7 – Must See Games

It’s sort of weird but the Big XII is getting a lot of games on these weekly installments which is surprising for me. I’m not overly impressed with the conference to be honest. Texas A&M & Texas Tech aren’t as good as I thought while Texas is bordering on disaster-ville. I thought Iowa St. & Baylor would be a little better too. Granted, Oklahoma St. is surprising while Oklahoma & Nebraska have lived up to their preseason hype. Taylor Martinez has emerged as a legitimate Heisman candidate in Lincoln & it’s certainly possible for a 13-0 Big XII Champion to emerge as a serious BCS Title contender if not the lone remaining AQ conference champion without a loss given how the season has turned out.

All that is to say that it’s a shame the Big XII is evaporating. Losing Nebraska is a significant blow in my opinion although losing Colorado isn’t a huge deal given their recent travails in the football centric conference. It’ll still be the Big XII (albeit 10 teams) for the most part, but despite Nebraska joining my most favorite conference, they certainly seem like a Big XII team to me in much the same way the Milwaukee Brewers are always going to be an AL East team.

This one gets interesting based on how badly Illinois beat Penn St. I don’t think Illinois wins, but Martez Wilson could keep the Baker/Bell duo in check forcing Cousins to play very well to pick up the win. MSU wins, but Illinois could make it fairly interesting.
Missouri gets its first real big Big XII test. Texas A&M has losses to Oklahoma St. & Arkansas, but it’s a solid team that can put up some points if needed. This game to me is more about seeing if the Tigers can really mount a decent charge against Nebraska later.
Very important to keep balance in the Big XII. If Nebraska wins the conference gains credibility b/c Oklahoma & Nebraska are on a collision course to see who gets to 13-0. If Texas wins & then Nebraska beats Oklahoma then the conference loses the BCS.
A huge SEC West battle. Auburn is a 4-point favorite going in which means the teams are almost dead even on a neutral site. It’s a huge game for both teams playing for a potential SEC title now that Alabama has a loss. More important for Auburn though.
Iowa should win, but a Michigan win here would be huge to dull the noise that Michigan is replaying their 2009 season all over again. The Wolverines are better & should be bowl eligible but losing 2 straight to Michigan St. & Iowa hurts a bit after a great start.
This could be an interesting game for Lane Kiffin. The Trojans have lost back to back games to Washington & Stanford while the Bears are a pretty solid football team. The Pac 10 is good enough to force USC into a 4-5 or even a 3-6 season if they aren’t careful.
You get an idea how good BYU under Max Hall was last season when Hall just made his first career NFL start for Arizona & beat the Saints. This BYU team isn’t the ’09 version so TCU should hammer them, but BYU is well coached & could make it intriguing if everything goes right.
In reality Ohio St.’s first true test of the 2010 season. It will be Ohio St’s first game of the year they play as the #1 team in the land. Wisconsin won’t be an easy game, but they aren’t nearly as dominant as I thought they’d be this year. OSU is a 3.5 point favorite on the road. That’s pretty large.
Remember that MSU HC Dan Mullen used to be Meyer’s OC at Florida. Florida should win, but the Bulldogs are no pushover & Florida isn’t playing well in the midst of a 2-game losing streak. I don’t think the wheels fall off in Gainesville, but there is potential for that to happen.
A win here puts Oklahoma St. at 6-0. Assuming Nebraska wins then both teams would be 6-0 in Stillwater next week which would make for a great game. The Cowboys haven’t really played anyone outside of Texas A&M & they haven’t had a solid road game. Should be interesting.
Give Doug Marrone a lot of credit at Syracuse. The Orange are 4-1 & 1-0 in the Big East. If Syracuse beats Pittsburgh then they improve to 5-1 (2-0). They might lose to West Virginia giving them two losses, but the Orange could easily end the season 10-2. Talk about a HUGE turnaround! Marrone would be the easy COY choice.
Oklahoma should win, but more importantly this gives us a gauge on Utah. If Oklahoma barely gets by ISU then we can believe in Utah a bit more than we do. If Oklahoma murders the Cyclones then the ISU win doesn’t look as rosy for the Utes going forward.
