Potpourri To Start the Season

Bruce Feldman starts us off right with his Week 1 predictions. I won’t give you all of them because it’s an Insider article, but he does predict Utah over Pittsburgh, TCU over Oregon St., LSU over North Carolina & Virginia Tech over Boise St.! What? He didn’t pick the Michigan/UConn, Notre Dame/Purdue or Indiana/Towson games!!??? COME ON! His biggest pounding comes courtesy of Arkansas who Feldman predicts will beat Tennessee Tech 63-10. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but Pittsburgh losing gets their season off to a bad start in my opinion.

It’s coming down HARD on North Carolina. The National Football Post says that start DT Marvin Austin definitely isn’t going to Atlanta to play in the game against LSU which is a huge loss, but UNC might also be without DE Robert Quinn, LB Bruce Carter, LB Quan Sturdivant, CB Kendric Burney, CB Charles Brown, RB Shaun Draugh, RB Ryan Houston & WR Greg Little! Are you kidding me!? Quinn, Carter, Austin & Sturdivant are potential 1st Team All-Americans! Burney & Brown are potential 1st Team All-ACC players! Draugh & Houston are their top-2 RBs! Little is their top WR! After going 20-18 in his 1st 3-years in Chapel Hill, HC Butch Davis was basically a good Tyler Yates season away from potentially going to the National Championship game. That’s GONE and most likely it’ll cost Davis his job.

Brigham Young is doing a pretty good job so far lining up games. They have gotten Notre Dame, Texas & San Jose St. to join the party. They aren’t the Irish so they’ll probably never make as money as Notre Dame, but I think they made a gutsy move that will pay off by going independent. It’ll be interesting to see if more teams don’t go independent creating an interesting situation with all the conference expansion. I think Texas could be the next team to go independent.

Speaking of independence, new USC AD Pat Haden said he would consider it!

Penn St. is starting true freshman Robert Bolden at QB to start the year. It’s a pretty gutsy move. I’m sure Kevin Newsome is going to get some playing time, but if Bolden starts off pretty hot (he will considering they play Youngstown St. in the opener) where does that leave Newsome? He’s just a sophomore?

College Football Talk hammers Indiana. That ain’t right!

Charles Robinson of Yahoo talks discusses which single season records might be broken in the NFL if the season went to 18-games. If it does go to 18-games I hope that Peyton Manning gets the single season record for passing TDs back as it made me sick the way Belichick & Brady purposely ran up the score on teams in order for Brady to get one more. Advanced metrics say that Brady’s season wasn’t as good as Peyton’s when Manning threw for 49TD and Indianapolis wasn’t running up scores late in the season. Karma is a bitch though and Brady got murdered in the Super Bowl.

College Football News’s Preseason Top-5 is: 1. Alabama, 2. Ohio St., 3. Georgia, 4. Florida, 5. Oklahoma. Georgia at #3????? WOW! CFN has a lot of love for QB Aaron Murray & doesn’t see any transition year for the Dawgs going from a 4-3 to a 3-4 under new DC Todd Grantham. I like Georgia too, but I think playing @South Carolina, @Auburn & a home game against Arkansas messes their chances up. They get SC & Arkansas too early. A road game to Colorado could be tricky as well.

Sports Illustrated gives us their Preseason Crystal Ball. Everyone there thinks either Alabama or Ohio St. will win the national championship. I don’t know what I think here. Given the way I did my power rankings, I think the championship game will probably be Boise St./Ohio St. in which case I think the Buckeyes will take home the BCS trophy. A couple of other things caught my eye. Stewart Mandel has the UConn Huskies going to the Fiesta Bowl as Big East champions. For some reason I’m really bullish on UConn. They bring a lot back and are exceptionally well coached. The other interesting thing is that Bill Trocchi predicts the Miami Hurricanes to flop. That would be a significant story.

I should have some other stuff up later.
