Super Bowl Rematches

I always think it’s pretty interesting when teams who have played in past Super Bowls meet in the regular season. They aren’t necessarily “must watch” games depending on the circumstances, but if you are old enough to actually remember the Super Bowl in which they played, it’s interesting to see the two jerseys squaring off against one another in a different time. This year’s NFL schedule gives us 6 Super Bowl rematches. Here they are:

Rematch of Super Bowl V: Colts 16, Cowboys 13

This year the Colts & Cowboys tee it off on December 5th. This could potentially be a Super Bowl preview given the aspirations of both teams. This year’s game will be in Indianapolis. These two teams have played each other 13 times previously with Dallas holding an 8-5 advantage.

Rematch of Super Bowl VIII: Dolphins 24, Vikings 7

This year the Dolphins travel to Minnesota on September 19th. This should be a pretty good early season game to be honest. The Dolphins are probably a lot better than people think, but play in a rugged AFC East. If Minnesota really does play this season with Brett Favre then Miami maybe even should win this game. These teams have only met 9 times with Miami holding a 5-4 advantage. The only teams Minnesota has played less than Miami are the Ravens, Texans, Jaguars & Jets.

Rematch of Super Bowl XX: Bears 46, Patriots 10

The Patriots march into Solider Field on December 12th for a rematch against the Bears. Unfortunately the punky QB, Sweetness & The Fridge won’t be suiting up for the Bears. Different expectations here for both squads. The Patriots are looking at a Super Bowl while the Bears just hope to be competitive. The Bears & Patriots have met 10 times with New England having a 7-3 advantage. That’s the worst winning percentage for the Bears against any opponent that they’ve played at least 10 games.

Rematch of Super Bowl XXIV: 49ers 55, Broncos 10

A rematch of the most lopsided win in Super Bowl history! The 49ers & Broncos get it going on Halloween, but not in San Francisco or Denver. This game is being played in London! I was a boy when this Super Bowl was played, but I do remember the 49ers dominating and those jerseys for Denver. Because Denver has changed their uniforms you don’t get that same feeling watching them do battle. These teams have met 11 times with Denver holding a 6-5 advantage.

Rematch of Super Bowl XXIX: 49ers 49, Chargers 26

The 49ers head south to take on the Chargers on December 16th. This could actually be a decent matchup. Both teams should be pretty good and it’ll be important for both. I think a lot of people think the 49ers should win the NFC West, but I wouldn’t completely count out the Cardinals just yet. Also the win will be a big one for San Diego for seeding purposes in the AFC playoffs. Should be a pretty intriguing game. These teams have met 11 times with the 49ers holding a 6-5 advantage.

Rematch of Super Bowl XXXI: Packers 35, Patriots 21

Not easy to forget this one as it was Brett Favre’s first and only Super Bowl win. The Packers will head to Foxboro on December 19th, but instead of Favre, the Patriots will be looking at Aaron Rodgers under center. Like the Colts/Cowboys game above, this could be a potential Super Bowl preview as both teams have legitimate shots at getting to the big game. Another late season game with big implications. The Packers & Vikings should be going at it hard while the Patriots should be fighting with the Jets. These teams have only met 8 times with an even 4-4 split.

I wonder if 6 Super Bowl rematches in a season is a lot or a few? They all should be fairly intriguing games and fun to watch when you think about how football history has been altered by these two teams going head to head in the Super Bowl.
