MWC Opening Up a Can

It’s not on the front page of your sports pages, but the Mountain West conference is seriously making a bid for having the best bowl season of any conference in the nation. MWC teams have been featured in 3 bowls thus far and here are the results:

New Mexico Bowl

Fresno St. (#3 in the WAC): 28
Wyoming (#5 in the MWC): 35

Las Vegas Bowl

Oregon St. (#3 in the Pac 10): 20
BYU (#2 in the MWC): 44

Poinsettia Bowl

California (#6 in the Pac 10): 27
Utah (#3 in the MWC): 37

I was a little disappointed last night as the Golden Bears started off with a very impressive 36-yard run by Shane Vereen to give Cal an early 7-0 lead. Then Utah QB Jordan Wynn threw a pick to give Cal a 14-0 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

I got nervous, but then I remembered my supreme confidence in the MWC and the fact that there was still 50 minutes of game left to play. Utah didn’t disappoint. The Utes outscored Cal 37-13 the rest of the way en route to increasing the MWC bowl record to 3-0!

That only leaves Air Force/Houston in the Bell Helicopters Bowl and TCU/Boise St. in the Fiesta. I think the MWC has a legit shot at going 5-0.

We aren’t hearing a ton about it, but we all know the MWC wants AQ status. Carving up the Pac 10 and going 5-0 in the bowls is certainly an argument that they deserve it.
