Coaching Updates

A whole lot of smoke and not a lot of fire! Obviously the rumor mill has been running rampant with tall tales about anyone and everyone associated with the vacancy at Notre Dame. Here is a quick review of what may (or may not) be happening with various programs.

Notre Dame: I can’t see how it doesn’t come down to Brian Kelly, Randy Edsall or Jim Harbaugh. One thing I think is a huge misconception is that ND can just tab any coach it wants to be its HC and that now the program is so down that it’s unable to do that. Knute Rockney had no HC experience before ND. Frank Leahy has 2-years at Boston College. Ara Parseghian had coached for 13-years at Miami-OH & Northwestern. Dan Devine had coached for 16-years at Arizona St. & Missouri. Lou Holtz had coached for 16-years at Arkansas, Minnesota, NC State and William & Mary. ND never tabbed guys like Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant, Bud Wilkinson, Darrell Royal or John McCay to be the next head coach and those guys came running. This is why it’s so ridiculous to say that ND is down just because Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops want to stay at Florida & Oklahoma respectively. That’s a disgrace to Florida & Oklahoma. It’s like saying those places are not dynamic football schools. They are. ND needs a very good football coach, but that coach doesn’t have to come from Florida or Oklahoma. In my opinion, it needs to come from Cincinnati. The rest will take care of itself.

Kansas: It at least appears that Kansas is looking at Turner Gil (Buffalo), Butch Jones (C. Michigan) & Skip Holtz (East Carolina). It also appears that Kansas may have been turned down by Jim Harbaugh, Tim Brewster (Minnesota) and Houston Nutt (Mississippi). The Kansas job seems almost like a no-win situation. Nebraska is climbing back and I really like what Gary Pinkel is doing at Missouri. I think Paul Rhoads is going to work miracles in Iowa St., plus you still have the Big XII South. Mangino got really lucky a couple of years ago in avoiding the Big XII South giants while getting his tough Big XII North games at home when Nebraska was down. If things return to normal in the Big XII then Kansas is going to have a tough time. Nutt’s job at Ole’ Miss is simply bigger so why take a step down? Same way with Harbaugh really. Brewster would be making a lateral move.

Fresno St.: Apparently there is talk that Pat Hill might be being forced out of the Fresno St. job! That is crazy news. I think Hill is an outstanding coach who has done a tremendous job at Fresno St. If this is true, then whoever is lucky enough to get Hill will have made out like a bandit! It’s just crazy to think Hill could be forced out at Fresno St. I’m not sure how a school like that could improve over a guy like Hill.

LSU: This is more speculation on my part than anything, but if the Dallas Cowboys crumble in December (which is likely), then owner Jerry Jones might pull the trigger and get rid of Wade Phillips. Jones has made it known that he likes current LSU HC Les Miles. LSU is an outstanding college football job, but I don’t think any collegiate coach would turn down the most high profile football coaching job in the world. If Jones really did want to hire Miles, then my guess is that the LSU job would open up which would make for a pretty gigantic coaching hire at a top-10 program this offseason.

If you want to keep up-to-date, I have my Job Openings page here that I keep updating with any news about new head coaches or teams that may be looking for head coaches.
